I'm from Milan, Italy. The tallest building is the Pirelli Skyscraper ("Pirellone") by Gio Ponti, 127meters high.

1_pirelli_aussenz.jpg       pirellone.jpg

This is the picture of the future tallest building of the city (216 mt.), should be built by 2012:

render_Citylife_pop.jpg

Small curiosity: according to the  tradion the tallest thing in the city is the golden statue of the Virgin ("la Madonnina" o Madùnina, in our dialect) on the top of the tallest spire of the Duomo, the cathedral of the city.

cattedrale.jpg

Since the spire is only 108 mt. high, to maintain the tradition, they placed a copy of the statue on the top of the antenna on the roof of the Pirelli Skyscraper.

In Montevideo, Uruguay there are not many tall buildings, though the tallest one and modern is the Antel Tower (Torre de las Telecomunicaciones / Antel) built in 2004

antel041916ca6lz8.jpg

Is very pretty, with 38 floors and 358 meters. (Sorry I don't know the feet size) Is located in Montevideo Bay

The first skyscraper in Europe goes to Torengebouw building in Antwerp. Although some would argue that the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool was the first, due to the fact it was the first in Europe to employ steel skeleton construction,  completed in 1911. I would vote for the latter.

Due to strict height restrictions in downtown Portland (to allow the rich folks living in the West Hills a view of the Cascades and Mount Hood without buildings in the way), the city cannot build any buildings taller than the current tallest building, the Wells Fargo Center:

portland-buildings-dreb0crw03000-s.jpg

From Wikipedia ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wells_Fargo_Center_(Portland,_Oregon) ...:

"It stands at 546 feet (166.4m) with 41 floors of office space. Upon opening in 1972, the Wells Fargo Center dwarfed all other existing high-rise developments in downtown Portland. Public outcry over the tower's scale and the potential of new development to block views of Mount Hood led to height restrictions on all new development."

Here's the Pacific Southwest Building in Fresno, CA, built in 1923:

That's not my photo. This one is:

Sort of pathetic for a city with a population similar to that of Tulsa or Portland, Oregon.

The city itself is something of an argument against sprawl, with tract-home contractor basically having a free hand on the edge of the city for years, leaving downtown a crumbling mess. I love some of the classic architecture that's still there, though, such as the San Joaquin Light and Power Company building, also from 1923:

It might not be our best, but it is a unique and cool building. Anyway I'm almost done building it in BAT. Thanks for this picture too. I can use it. 2.gif
