Devonshire: Georgehampton – The Westside Story

 

 

 

 

 

Time to see the west end of Georgehampton, home of the Government House and the West End Shops. Of course, the dominant feature of the west side is the Government House, serving as headquarters for the whole Devonshire district until a permanent capital site can be built.

 

 

This imposing brick edifice is the most distinctive Lake Style building in the district, and the signature landmark of the Georgehampton skyline.

 

 

This massive five story structure is by far the largest governmental structure in Schulmania. This was not only to provide for future growth, but also because Georgehampton would be serving as the administrative site for colonial government until a new capital could be built and for housing the district offices of the Bureau of Feline Affairs.

 

 

The stately façade combines elements of Lake Style brick homes and the formal Temple Style into an appealing combination. The architect, Troy McClure, won an award for the design. If that name sounds familiar, you might remember him from such buildings as Fledder’s Wooden Shoes and Georgetown Hall.

 

Let’s place this structure in context by exploring the west end with some wider views.

 

 

Fine brick Lake Style homes and shops line the street of the West End.

 

Surprisingly enough, palm trees planted along the sides of the road thrived, despite not being native to the area. Is it the hardy Atkinos varietal which can handle this climate? Or. Perhaps, the clumsy gardener who did not ready his simple direction: “Plant using the No Maxis Palms Mod”. Sometimes, in Devonshire, getting a gardener to read and follow directions is more difficult than walking and chewing gum at the same time.

 

 

Shops along Georgehampton Terrace offer a wide variety of goods from across the nation. At the center is the pedimented façade of the Bank of Lake George, issuer of a large number of Devonshire’s bank notes, such as the example below.

 

 

 

A wider view of West End commerce. Georgehampton Terrace offers a wide variety of goods. The brick building with the green and white awning to the right is a popular new eatery, Chef Biscetti’s Ristorante.

 

Nice brick homes face the commerce in the West End. Many who live here work at the nearby Government House. Makes for a short commute.

 

How short is the commute for district government workers? Look at the northwestern corner of town and you’ll see just how little walking is needed.

 

 

 

The edge of the Government House is just to the left of these  images, showing two angles of the same intersection.

 

The southwestern corner of town is as close to suburban living as this compact village gets. From the backyards of these homes, there is nothing but wilderness until you reach the terraformed but unoccupied Schulmericho site.

 

 

 

 

The thick forest creeps right up to the property lines of these homes and businesses.

 

The south side of town is predominantly homes. The road intersects with Georgehampton Court, the street which separates east and west in Georgehampton.

 

 

 

Now that we’re back in the middle of town, we can examine the two side streets: Edgehill Lane and Georgehampton Court. Edgehill Lane is a short street with a few houses. Georgehampton Court connects the north and south sides.

Edgehill Lane is just that – on the edge of a hill.

 

We have had a fabulous time in Georgehapton – the Lady of the Lake. Before we go, we have been invited to the Mayor’s House for a picnic.
