Hi folks! I'm not well known around these parts, but every now and then I have an urge to create a new map. I mostly create these maps or transport view mods for my own purposes, however I figure there's nothing gained by keeping them to myself, so I generally release these things.

I've just released a new map, of the city of Hobart on the STEX . It's live now (I seem to be good at catching the STEX at the right time).

Hobart

Hobart Region

Located in the south of Tasmania, Hobart is a city of immense beauty. Its location is stunning - the city is dominated by Mt Wellington, which rises 1,270 metres behind the city. Alongside Sydney, this city would have arguably one of the most stunning harbours in the world.

It's quite a hilly place - as is probably evident by the terrain image. The city is fortunate to have retained its historic district, centred around Constitution Dock. If it weren't for the modern buildings behind this area and the cars on the road, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd been transported back in time.

Hobart is, however, Tasmania's largest city, and a well-known one. It's the end-point of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race - one of the most famous (and most dangerous) such races in the world.

Hobart was a whaling city. In the 1800's, as the southernmost Australian port, she was an important port for this purpose. Her deep, broad harbour was an asset to the city.

The city has a chilly feel in winter, with Mt Wellington receiving a dumping of snow many years (as shown). Snow has been known to fall to sea level, though it is rare. Hobart has a mild summer generally, rarely hitting the 30's, and usually having maximums in the mid-20's (I'm talking celsius here).

Hobart's challenging terrain should make for an interesting city

Great to see some Aussie city maps on the STEX!!!

I haven't been to Hobart but this looks to be a nicely done map, Well done!

now for my reason on posting such high praise:

Do you take requests? If so I'd love a map of the Adelaide Metro area. If you dopn't, and you could point me to where I can gain the data needed to make a map, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

I'm hoping so. I've longed to use the terrain of Hobart because of how varied it is.

I'll probably start a CJ based on this map at some point. I won't be recreating the real Hobart, but I will probably borrow a few ideas from the actual place (the placement of the motorways will be guided by the location of the city's "Outlets" - not officially classified as freeways but so close as to mean the difference is negligible.

I'll also be following roughly the city's actual pattern of development (mainly because it makes a world of sense).

The best thing is there's quite a bit of terrain to use for farming, so I'm looking forward to getting some nice farming districts going.

I'd love to see somebody do a journal using my Wollongong map. I almost did myself - it's an excellent part of the world.

By the way, I have a new transport view mod ready to go. I'd like to get a little feedback before plonking it on the STEX, though. It'll be using an installer (which will be my first download to do so. For any Mac users, I'd probably post it to this thread here.

    Hi, Cammo.

Welcome to the Mapping Community.  Hobart certainly is a great looking map and will offer a great deal of variety in development.

Looking forward to more maps and to chatting further with you.

    Regards,

    Vandy

I knew I should've put the mod posting in a new post, it seems to have been the kiss of death to the thread. 3.gif

I know double posts aren't liked around here, but...

This post contains a standard .zip version of Version 2 of the Metropolitan Transport View Mod (I've done this because of the small size of the file, and because the STEX version is a .EXE file.

OK, so it's a triple post... But I'm doing this for a reason. I've noticed that my Hobart region's a bit small as compared to the place's real dimensions. It's still roughly to a reduced scale, but I thought I should at least let everyone know.

I may release a "to scale" version at a later date, but quite frankly I can't be bothered at the moment.

I am a resident of Sydney for the past seven years. Previsously I lived in Hobart. Was born there in fact! Am so glad that Hobart is being represented here. I agree it is a beautiful city. Anybody has questions? Feel free to ask.

    Hobart Near RL Size

Hi folks. I've just submitted a rescaled version of the Hobart map to the STEX. It's not exact size, but it's not far off it, either.

This one's much smoother, and the coastline on this one shows hardly any pixelation. I'm really happy with this version, and despite my slow computer, I'm probably going to build my region on this larger version - though thankfully I won't have to deal with this comp for much longer. I had one minor issue rendering it, mainly that my computer decided to interrupt the rendering process when it was about 3/4 done, so some of the map doesn't show (yet, anyway). But I figured I should show a closer shot anyways.

The area shown above is the main part of Hobart. The CBD area is roughly at the centre.

EDIT: It's now live. Either click on the image above or click here.

Awesome map you have there i was going ro do one of this are but as you did such a good job I wont need to. Is it based on 16 bit greyscale or the new colour importing feature?

It's based on the old standard (mainly because I'm working from USGS data). I'm using essentially the technique posted in Mallow's tutorial thread (though I didn't use the shape files for this particular map as there was bugger all difference).

The USGS data has come a long way in the past few months - I remember not so long ago that most of the Australian data was full of holes. Not a single hole in the more recent data.

Is there a thread anywhere that details the colour import feature?

    Hey cammo, great looking map!

I'm having an issue which was raised in the comments for the new Hobart map, which is that the loaded map looks nothing like the photo and has far too much water. I put a 1500 mod file in my plugins folder, but to no avail. any ideas?

Can I suggest moving the 1500 mod file in a subfolder called "zzz_zzz_plugins" (without the " " 's of course)?

I do believe it needs to load after any terrain mods.

    Anyway, more eyecandy:

I thought you all might like to see this thing in all its beauty.

OK, i moved the 1500 file into the suggested folder, and the map now looks much more like the picture, but nowhere near as smooth. Where the land is quite low on the picture, the map has rendered with heaps of patchy bits of water, and the coastline is very jagged. Which specific 1500 file do you use cammo? this may somehow make a difference...

    *cough* *hack*

    Hi *cough*

    *blows dust off thread*

Boy, it has been a while since I've done anything of this sort.

I'm currently working on a rendition of the Central Coast Region. No image yet, as I'm still doing a few retouches to certain areas on the map.

I'm also moving to .SC4M format with this release. Everything else was done the old way until I got into SC4 Terraformer, but this eliminates all of that fiddling around with height .dat files for you end user folks. It does mean registering over at SC4Devotion's LEX to grab SC4Mapper... I'll post the link in short order.

    EDIT:

    Alright, this is done.

First off, you'll need SC4Mapper to render this.

    It can be found here.

    As for the region:

    Region Preview #2

It's ready to go. Should appear on the STEX promptly.
