The error message I am getting says that a problem occured when trying to transfer the file D:\SimCity_5.dat from the media. It asks if I want to retry to copy file or cancel the installation? I retry and this message just keeps popping up.

Any ideas of what to do next. I have cleaned the disk

try copying the files to your hard drive. make a folder somewhere called SC4. make two subfolders, Disc 1 and Disc 2. now copy the content of each disc into the corresponding folder. run the installer from the folders on your hard drive.

just a suggestion, may or may not work.

You could try cleaning the drive too.

If either of these 2 fail, you could try taking it back to the retailer for an exchange

open up a Command window and see if you can copy the file off the cd. if you can then its the install, then follow prince's advice. but if you can't then ide go with callagrafx's sugesstion.

is it possible for a drive's laser to get knocked loose on a car ride? i was transporting my computer last year, and after that my primary CD drive doesn't seem to want to read CDs at all. the CDs spin, i get the CD cursor, but after the 5 second spin up, nothing happens. yet the CD works fine in my secondary CD drive.

CD drives often die. We had one here that quit slowly and it acted like a software problem for quite a while before the drive really quit. It used to burn coasters every second disk.

Cheapest alternative is to replace it with a new DVD-RW drive.

Yes, any good jolt can knock the laser out of alignment. I've even had a cd player die on me because it was too close to the speaker. Over time vibrations from the speaker moved the head out of alignment.

N_O_Body is right, replace the drive.
