Most find math boring. And yet, for those of us who know what we're doing, sometimes completely wrong answers can be amusing.

Exhibit A: Expanding it would be: (a+b)(a+b)

              Solving it by the FOIL method would be: a²+2ab+b²

Exhibit B: The answer is 1 over the square root of 2

Exhibit C: IDK

Exhibit D: That's a classic 3-4-5 triangle!

Exhibit E: I'm guessing the answer would be 5?

I actually like math, so what you showed us is sort of funny.

    Okay, lessee here:

    about exhibit A:

    cityhawk has the right answer for n=2. However, that is not a general formula. Try this out:

    (a+b)n=an+nan-1b+(n(n-1)/2!)an-2b2+.....+nabn-1+bn

    naturally, the higher n is, the more terms you have.

    about exhibit B:

    √(2)/2 is equal to 1/√(2). However, usually we don't like radicals in the denominator if we can avoid it. Thus, no simplification is required.

    about exhibit C:

    It can't be simplified.

    about exhibit D:

    it's 5. √(32+42). Simple Pythagorean Theorem.

    about exhibit E:

    "lim" is the notation used for "limit". The top one is infinity as stated. The bottom one is also infinity. The joke is about the infinity sign looking ike a sideways 8.

    Well, I'm only limited to Algebra 2 here, so I had a feeling that some of them would be wrong. Looks like I got Exhibits B and D right, though. Hooray!

    Although I am only at Algebra 2 (so no, I don't understand the calculus) as well you still just have to laugh.

    Sometime in April I found a series of weird geometric proofs that proved 0=1, so on... Actually, they were very persuasive.

    I love geeky jokes.  But then again I go to an engineering school.  Here are some of my favorites:

    You might ben an engineer if...

    You have no life - and you can PROVE it mathematically.

    You laugh at jokes about math[aticians]

    You have to bring a jacket with you, in the middle of summer, because there's a wind-chill factor in the lab.

    When your professor asks you where your homework is, you claim to have accidentally determined its momentum so precisely, that according to Heisenberg it could be anywhere in the universe.

    You'll assume that a "horse" is a "sphere" in order to make the math easier

    The salesperson at Best Buy can't answer any of your questions

    You have a habit of destroying things in order to see how they work.

    If your IQ is bigger than your weight

    There are a ton of these, but these are my favorite because I find some truth in these when I walk around campus.

    Just a quick try. It's been a long time.

    (a+b)n = an + a(n-1)b + a(n-2)b2 + . . . + a2b(n-2) + ab(n-1) + bn  Whew!

    SQRT(2)/2 = .206 ... something

    I have forgot my trig identities needed to solve this.

    (3,4,5) = good old Pythagoras, Rah, Rah, Pi!

    The limit of the inverse of (x - 5) as x approaches zero does not approach infinity, it approaches the Schwartzchild limit of arithmetic.  It breaks the machine.,

    ^^^you know, you make a good point. Neither of those limits exist. In both cases, the left hand limit is negative infinity and the right hand limit is positive infinity. But there is no overall limit. Whoever came up with that one made a booboo. Oops.31.gif
