why not make a simtropolis set? put dirks name on the side of the engine and the other admin names on the rest of the cars?
    just an idea

I've pretty much have done that except that Dirks image is on two boxcars instead of an engine. I don't have all the admins yet.

Speaking of Admins, does any of them even look at this thread? Rapheal is the only one that's ever commented on the Simtropolis cars I've made and I think he's on the Mod Squad, not the Admin Squad. It scares me to think that this thread could be derailed and they'd never know.

Not really but it sounded good.

I'm not sure about early grain hoppers, to be honest.  I have models of modern grain and cement hoppers.  I think that during the steam era, though, grain was hauled in boxcars, not hoppers.

Does anyone have top view images of coverd hoppers?

    Edit:
Does anyone feel that the hatches on the grain car below are not correct and should be changed?

    Trolca,

Here is a 3 bay that you may be able to use. I have a NW 2 bay pic but i don't know how to resize it so that it will upload. I hope it may be of some use to you.1.gif

    Trolca;

I have just returned from a rail trip, hence my recent silence... I saw a lot of covered hoppers on the UP tracks between Sacramento and Reno/Sparks.  Unfortunately I don't have any photos, but I think I can talk you through it...

The sides of your hoppers are pretty much spot-on.  Most of the ones I saw had no vertical braces on the sides, and the sides curved outward in the middle, much like your River Haven passenger cars.  For weathering purposes, it seems that when unloading, they bang on the sides of the cars with hammers to dislodge any sticky cargo.  This results in clusters of circular rust spots, each about 2 in diameter, located on the sides of the cars in the center of each bay, where the outward curve of the car is at its farthest point.  On older cars, rust streaks ran downward from them.  Some cars I saw had do not hammer signs painted on, about 2' tall and 1.5' wide, white background, black drawing of a hammer, with the universal red circle-slash over it.  Often these had the telltale hammer marks on them also.

As for the tops, running boards down the center are a thing of the past it seems.  What I saw were hoppers that had a small top platform at each end of the car, but no way to get from one end to the other.  A few had running boards all around the edges of the car; your most recent BN model is almost exactly right as near as I can tell.  The tops had a square hatch above each bay for loading, about half the car width wide, and 3/4 of the bay length long.  I think that the two-across circular loading hatch design is also used on some cars, it depends what the car is intended to carry.

    Hope this helps.

As for passenger service in general, I'm hoping that others like BigRedFish will pick up the slack so I can focus on freight.
    [/quoteMESSAGE][/bEGINQUOTE]

I'm happy to do that.  Right now, I've figured out how to make that Pennsylvania electric in both freight and passenger versions.  It relies on one of Oppie's models, though, so I have to get his permission before I can distribute it.  I already have an email in to him about it.

Trolca, would you prefer that I start a new thread for passenger requests, to reduce the clutter in this thread?

Thanks for your replies. It looks as if I should rework the tops. I thought that back around the 70's the grain cars were something like the CSX Grain car in my previous posts.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to include the curved sides.

Covered hoppers must not be a very hot topic, I guess I should stop using it as an icebreaker at parties.

It might be best, at least for passenger. You could just keep posting in the passenger thread you started. If I have any passenger related work I could post it there instead of here. I'll make it easier for everyone to know which thread has what.

Bah, I'd contribute but I don't know a thing about em. Do what you want, realism or not, this IS a game, after all. As long as it looks good, it's fine by me.

lol. 22.gif I'm guessing, seeing as most people aren't train nuts. However if you were at a party consisting of mostly train nuts, it might work. 1.gif

And nice work on your stuff so far. While I haven't used them yet, I'm going to get some of it.

And yes, seperating the passenger stuff would be a good idea - especially considering this is a 38 page thread... 14.gif

Wow, I just found this thread, so forgive me for not wanting to go thru over 30 pages to find this out...

But could someone do a Portland TriMet mod to make MAX light rail trains and an Amtrak one? How does one go about putting a model of one into SC4 and would it work with buses?

Sorry for the intrusion, but I LOVE TRAINS and train mods!

And crap, can't help but ask, but its there a Union Pacific mod? Ever since they took over SP, that's been my Railroad. 1.gif

The great covered hopper scare has come to an end. I know everyone was so adamant on this subject but I had to end it before it got ugly. Unless there's a big protest I wont change any previous work.

So I was just minding my own business watching the Super Bowl Half Time Show and Justin Timberlake uncovered Janet Jackson's right hopper!  It was so lewd!

I made an Amtrak train some time ago. It's one one of those 38 pages.

Place the train mods in the Plugin folder in the game directory, not the one in My Documents.

Dearnen has made a Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Engines, I made some box cars to go along with them.

I'll be releasing all my work in a mod package as soon as I'm done with a renumbering project which is nearly finished.

    Edit:

So the Jackson family is into grain transporting too?

That depends... How's it been working for you so far? Has a big crowd formed around you or are you pretty much left alone to munch on a celery stick at the munchies table by your lonesome? I mean... if its working... or you just plain love celery... you don't want to give it up.22.gif

And then, of course, you have to ask yourself if you really can have a meaningfull exchange with someone who doesn't appreciate the fine, sexy lines of a covered hopper car? You know... there's all kinds out there. Some people just don't appreciate the finer things...

By all means, use my new avatar!! I think I'll keep this one. Changing it occasionally used to be fun back on Neoseeker, but I think I need some more routine as I near 20. (4 years on the net already?)

can you make a flatcar with a military chopper on it?[/quoteMESSAGE][/bEGINQUOTE]

I currently don't know how the cargo is placed on the cars. If I knew I could do something like that as well as correct a flaw that's been bothering me since day one.

Just place it as you would any freight on a flat, centered and if more than two blades then fold them. If only two then tie them front to rear.

I'm talking about how the game places cargo on the cars. It has to do with game code such as Exempler, S3D, FSH and maybe RUL files.

My plan is to at least have a European style car to replace most of the originals. I'll be modeling most of them from the images you've sent me. I should try making a freight engine or two as well.
