Were you using the Colombus terrain modd? Whenever I uninstall it and try to load a city in a region that I used or rendered when I did use the modd, the game crashes to the desktop.

that's because when you use a terrain mod, the game saves it with the city. when you uninstall the mod, the game can no longer find the files when loading the city, therefore a crash.

thats not true...you can change terain mods...have done so myself....was using the columbus and now am using the missouri breaks.

Most often the cause of a corupt city file is removed reward type plugins. When you place a reward lot into your city, an instance is recorded to the city file (if you look at it in the reader you will find a listing of the requirements met). Because the game looks for that pluging during the load up....you need to still have it in you plugins...not having it will cause the city to crash.

Civic files are simular in that they can cuase some odd behaivor when the plugins are removed while still being in the city. Often times you will find a radius from the struckure even when there isnt one there....also this can cause wierd things to happen with your funding slider.

Make sure that you did not remove any reward plugins....If you decide you want to remove a reward lot from you plugins....You must first remove all instaces of it in your cities!

edit;   almost forgot....there is two essential files that you have to get for the other terrain files to work right....make sure that you have these

bourneid -Is there a special procedure to follow when doing this bourneid? Obviously some people are confused here....

bourneid -Is this true for ALL terrain mods, no matter who did them? I don't think I understand. Perhaps if you outlined the mechanics of how a terrain mod works?

No..those are essensial for the CP terrain mods by Cycle dog...those dont get removed between the diffrent CP types...

but for the others that are out there.....you have to make sure all the files are removed first.....including (if you use the Columbus mod) the later download Snowcapped mod....sense this didnt get uploaded at the same time as the columbus mod you may have placed it in a diffrent place.

But once all accociated files for a particular terrain mod are removed you can add a new one....you just have to make sure that you open and save each of you cities for the new mod to take effect.

As I said before...I suspect that the crashing is being caused by anouther plugin missing or fuilty.

What you can do is.....go into your plugins...set it to "arrange by modified" and "show in groups"....... take out the plugins for....say a week before the crash.....see if the game is more stable......if it is then move back in one at a time till the game crashes....that would be the lot

    _________________________________________________________________________

edit: if your computer is completly crashing....you may not have a SC4 problem but a driver or hardware problem.......has anything recently chaged on you system.....updated drivers and such....

If you are getting a reboot, then you have an operating system problem.  You should change your options to get a Blue Screen of Death instead.  To do this:

    1. Right click on the my computer icon on your desk top and choose properties.
    2. Choose the advanced tab and click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section
    3. Uncheck the automatically restart box in the System Failure frame.
    4. Click on OK, twice.
The next time you crash you will get a BSOD which should tell you which Windows component has failed.

After a BSOD, you have to do a power off/power on restart.
