CD problems

I recently got a new laptop for my graduation present and promptly put sim city deluxe and all of my cities and plugins on it. For about a week it all worked perfectly and smoothly. Then suddenly the computer just stopped recognizing the play cd, and whenever I try to load the game it says "Please insert the SimCity 4 Deluxe play disk, select OK and resart the game". After trying to clean the cd and receiving the same message I tried the disk on my old computer, where it worked perfectly. What is going on? If anybody can help I would greatly appreciate it

Sounds like the cd drive on your new machine has had an infant mortality.

Strange, indeed.  Computers don't do funny things.  Are the two copies of the game (on the two machines) identical?  If not, did you donwload something on the laptop into plugins?

In any case, try turning off autoplay on the drive, put the play disk in and start the game from the shortcut.  If it can't see your disk, I would seriously run diagnotics on the drive.

I had a similar problem once. It was a Civiliztion II disk or something that wouldn't work on my computer under any circumstances. I took it back to the store and they got it to work with no problems. The one I exchanged it for did the same thing so I just gave up. I everything under the sun to get it to work, but it never would.

Our problems differ in that I never even got the game to install. So I'd say that computers can do funny things sometimes.

There are several things that can happen.. Others have touched the "hardware failure" and that seems not to be it. If you have relabeled the CD drive to another letter (I use L and M for mine out of habit) after you installed, it won't work with some games. Also of course you may have simply scratched or scuffed the surface.. doesn't take much.. especially the way most ppl throw around their CD's.. I'm actually surprized they work as well and as long as they do 4.gif . There are "polishers" that you can buy that will polish the CD (not a bad investment anyways if u use many CD's. I think they run $15-25... OR you can use a very mild abrasive and polish it yourself as long as you are GOOD and have a STEADY HAND.. but if in doubt I wouldn't do that.. You can also return it to MAXIS and they will replace it (Charge used to be $5 US but don't know anymore). OR you can just buy ahnother.. I think it is selling new for 10-15 bucks nowadays... Good luck
