I am running SC Deluxe on a machine that should have more than enough of everything to run the game without delay or problems. I even removed my NAM install to make sure that wasn't bogging anything down. And sure enough, everything floats along nicely like a squirrel on rollerskates until suddenly - crash, quit, exit. I can't find any pattern to this except that it happens every 20-30 minutes. It is obviously extremely frustrating to have to save every other minute in order not to lose everything. It also makes it kind of difficult to save, experiment and only save if the experiment turned out okay. Suggestions, anyone?

I know exactly what you problem is, it has been documented with all types of games....

Ok, I will say it straight...something on your pc is over heating and the pc notices this and crashes all unnescecary programs to ensure the hardware isnt permantly damaged.

Check that not only your graphics card meets the min MB requirment, but also that it is of high quality and can preform many calcualations.

If this isnt the case, then when it crashes, just feel your tower and check if any areas are unusually hot.

Hope that helps 9.gif

Hmmmm... The computer should be more than capable of handling the game but I guess I'll give it a rest, then fire it up later and wait for it to go kaboom, so I can feel the tower up. Yay.

windows xp does NOT have in-built thermal sensoring capabilities. so it's not a heating issue at all, unless you have thermal sensing programs running and have thermal sensors on your hardware. what it could be is a lack of Swap Space (Virtual Memory). you could do by posting system specs, including graphics card, amount of ram, amount of virtual memory (a google search should tell you how to find it), and windows version.

btw, this topic should be moved to Bugs and Technical Issues.

Ooookay. Thank the powers that be that there are helpful people around. 4.gif

3 ghz processor, 2 gb ram, 256 mb graphics card, windows xp service pack 2, aaaaand 1.5 gb virtual memory. I'd have been able to find this a lot faster if this had been a mac, so thanks a lot for the google idea. Saved me a headache there.

Now let's see if I can figure out how to move this thread to Bugs as you suggest. Good point, that.

nice specs. you're gonna have to PM a moderator of this part of the forum to move this topic. only they have the powers to do so.

you should probably increase your Virtual Memory to the maximum allowed by windows (4096 MB). SC4 is strange in that even if there's enough memory to not cache anything, it still will. with 2GB, Swap Space shouldn't be a problem, but it's best to bump it up if you can afford that much used space. just set both the minimum and maximum size for the Virtual Memory to the same amount.

btw, what type of processor are you running, and what type of graphics card? make sure to get the most recent driver updates for both. google the make of each and the word "drivers" and you should get some results.

when playing simcity at the point 15 minutes had gone past, my computer would return back to the desktop. i timed this a few times and it was always around the 15 minute mark. so i decided to completey reinstall the software and delete all the old cities and take out all the plugins and place them in a plugins2 folder and PRESTO it worked now i can leave simcity on, without worrying about the 15 minute bug. It probably is a dodgy plugin somewhere but as of yet i'am still working my way through nearly a 1gb of plugins to find the culpret.

i highly doubt it's a plugin because his game is crashing even with an empty plugin folder.

If you read burtos post, you'll notice he isn't crashing now that he has removed all his plugins, and is proceeding with a sensible investigation.
