Lines on Screen

Hi everyone,

First, a description of the problem:

As I play the game, lines begin to build up on the screen.  If I rotate the screen or change to night/day they disappear, but begin to build up again after that.  I've attached a pic.

Now for the environment:

I've got a fresh install of SC4 Rush Hour with the latest patch.  I'm running it at 1280x800 resolution.  I've got a P4 3ghz with 1g ram.  I've recently installed a Radeon 850XT AGP card.

I believe the problem is with the Radeon as I've installed it recently.

Here is a screenshot.

Thanks for your help!

Fascinating.  It is probably a problem with your video card.  You can verify this by changing the game from hardware rendering to software rendering in the control panel, then restart the game.  If the problem has gone away, we have isolated the problem to your video card/drivers.

Assuming that is the case, set all the options on your video card controls to application selected and see if that helps.  If not, try setting them all off and try that.

If none of this helps, someone else will have to deal with this because I have an NVIDIA system and know nothing about RADEON cards.

Hey, I also had that problem, but I don't think I'll be of any help. As a temporary fix, I zoomed out and then back in, and the lines generally disappeared. However, whenever I move the screen (camera) again, the lines reappeared.

However, I haven't recently had that problem. Last time it happened was about 3 weeks ago. Try just givng it a little more time, and it could self-correct.

Again, sorry there's no real help here, but it worked for me.

I've had a similar problem with an old video card of mine, turns out the video card was dying and needed replacing. I would slowly get these random lines building up on the screen, and they got worse and worse until you couldn't see anything and then I would get a BSOD from the video driver.

However, it's possible your video card may just be overheating. Even if you don't overclock the video card processor, it can overheat from warmer room temperatures, or the fan on the video card could be dying, or even the thermal paste between the heat sink and video processor may need replacing.

Is anti-aliasing enabled? I get a very very minor version of that with anti-aliasing enabled, probably not related. Try restoring default driver settings in any event.

SC4 is very picky about what newer cards features will work while it is on.. Go to ATI and get the latest drivers and if you have them do a search on ATI's FAQ about SC4 .. I think you will find there is a ready fix, tho I havn't looked it up.. just turning all advanced features off on my video card worked ok so I didn't look further .. it has been mentioned before and has various artifacts that appear with the problem.. take a look SC4 was designed before any of the fancy video card features were solidified and they implemented their own approach.. some newer cards get really mucked when they r used.
