MicroDEM help

I downloaded some map files from USGS and I'm trying to turn them into usable maps with MicroDEM.  The problem is that I can't figure out how to turn the image into a grayscale elevation map, and the MicroDEM help files aren't very helpful.  If anyone could explain how to do this I would be very grateful.

Well, that was fast, I got it, but now how do I change how dark or light the image is? There are a lot of areas I know should be land that are clearly underwater in the image.

this is not an easy process and does take alot of trial and error, but once you get it, its easy

if you are staring out it would be worth it to get ahold of mallows plugins so you can change the elevation range that is used to render
