I'll give it a try...

I'm Mexican, with Afro-Caribbean heritage.

1. Mexicans are deeply Catholic and often involves carrying images such as Virgen de Guadalupe.

2. Mexicans are poor.

3. All Mexicans want to cross the border to the US.

4. Latin Americans love reggaeton.

5. Mexicans only eat tacos and only drink tequila. Burritos are common.

6. Mexicans make big celebrations with huge families.

7. Mexicans eat food with lots of hot chili.

8. Caribbean people love reggae.

9. Caribbean people like smoking weed.

Now some explanations...

1. Most Mexicans are Catholics, but the Church has lost quite some prevalence. 76% of Mexicans are Catholic; 3.1% do not follow any religion (myself included - atheist).

2. Mexicans ARE poor. Nearly half of population live in poverty, but there is also a rising middle class.

3. Indeed there is a huge community living illegally in the US, but the middle class prefers to stay here. I like this place too much to leave.

4. Many Latin Americans like reggaeton, but many (myself included) dispise it.

5. Tacos are only fast food, therefore we have a much wider range of options to eat. Burritos are pretty much unknown in most of the country. Tequila is not the only national drink. National beer, mezcal, pulque are very popular too. I personally prefer Cuban rum over tequila.

6. While family is a very important social structure, Mexican society is rapidly changing. Two-person families are getting common, specially in cities.

7. That is pretty much true, though many people don't like such strong flavors.

8. I'm sure many Caribbeans like reggae, but the Caribbean is a region with many nations and cultures.

9. There are people who smoke marijuana all over the world. As far as I know, African and other countries like Canada and New Zealand have a higher cannabis consumption than most of the Caribbean.

Okay, here comes the Italian teenager. Here are the stereotypes for both:

Italian people:

Our mothers have mustaches

All we know is fractured English

We're lazy

We argue mostly in hand gestures and fists

We all smoke

We all know how to make Italian food i.e. pizza, canoli, etc

Teenagers:

We smoke (again)

We steal

We try to sneak some booze

We're stupid

Hate authority

We don't act like who we are

Disprove the Italian ones:

No, they don't

I was born in America, so no, I don't

Okay, I am kinda lazy.

I argue more with fists than hand gestures, although I do yell at people in Italian

Okay, I can't smoke and I don't want to smoke and I medically can't smoke

I do know how to make some Italian desserts, but that's it

Teenager disproves:

Look above

Nope, never have, never will

Okay, my dad gave me a beer once as a father-son thing

Okay, I'm kinda stupid

That one's true

I stick to who I am, which is a nasally, underweight, misunderstood genius with a medical chart the size of Texas. I am charismatic, though. Leonardo

Oooh...Drama Kids:

1.) All we listen to are showtunes.

BS.  In high school, all we listened to was Korn and System of a Down, Slipknot, etc.  It wasn't until I got to college that I actually heard real showtunes outside of practice.  So yeah...maybe some people really like them, but definitely not true about all of us.

2.) We're good at English/Literature, but not in Math/Science.

Not true.  I seem to do better with Physics than I do with English.  In fact, my dream since I was 7 was and still is to become a Commercial Airline Pilot, which requires years and years of Math and Science.

3.) We're all homosexual.

True, there are a large number of homosexual people involved with theatre, but it's not all of us.  And no, I'm not putting down people who are gay, not at all...it's just that this one seems to be people's favorite stereotype about theatre, and it's not true.

4.) We wear bright, eclectic clothing and like to be melodramatic about everything.

Not at all.  I'm wearing a pair of pre-faded grey-black jeans and a t-shirt.  And I'm pretty quiet, I think.  I don't like to draw too much attention to myself...unless I'm on stage.

5.) We all smoke and/or do drugs.

Well...I don't know how true this is.  I don't, but I've seen it quite a bit, so it might be true.  Or it might just be a side-effect of being around other college students, not sure.

But yeah...those are just some stereotypes about drama people.

I go to school in Louisiana as a Northerner. The kids drink too. This may be a biased perspective because I go to school in New Orleans.

-You all drive battered pickup truks with Confederate flags painted on the tailgate, bumper, etc.quote>

Pickup trucks are very popular, but most people take care of them, and the Confederate flag is usually a small bumper sticker.

-Most have more tatoos than teeth quote>

Never seen much to support that.

-Eat very strange foods at timesquote>

Oh yeah. Cracklins and alligator and stuff.

All have a funny accent and say things like "y'all"quote>

I like certain Southern accents, but especially in LA and NC, there are a wide variety of accents, and many Southerners can tell where others are from, sometimes down to the city, based on their accent

-You all love to go huntingquote>

I do see an awful lotta people who wear camo hunting gear

1. All highschool students hate school and see it as a place to socialize

2. All teens try to act like black Gangsters...

3. All americans drive huge cars or SUVs

4. All Americans are lazy

5. All teens drink or do drugs

6 Most Teens swear and Use the F-word constatly

The CORRECT Answers

1. Nope, all most everyone in my class has A's or B's and I'm in 3 honors classes

2. Well, yes, I do know a few people who act this way...But not me!

3 Hold on...Don't fear the Reaper is on..........................Nope, most people in my neighborhoods drive Sedans or other...But my family all drives SUVs, I drive a '92 Jeep

4. Far from it for most, I just got back from re-doing some houses

5. Nope, no one I know doesw drugs or drinks

6. Okay, a few people I know do this, but I can't stand it.

Bring on more Stereotypes!

quote>

I couldn't disagree more.

1. Yeah I was in all honors classes too, but about half the people in them were only there because they wanted to be around their friends. At lower levels the amount of apathy for school is astounding.

2. I'd say that number varies from 1/10 to 1/2 depending on where you are.

3. In Chicagoland, almost every suburban family has an SUV or Minivan. Soooo many Hummers around.

4. Eh, most people I meet work very hard for a living.

5. All teens drink, most teens have tried drugs. I'd like to hear where in America this isn't true (Amish country?). We don't abuse alcohol as much as Europeans: http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/36/17/10

http://media.www.michigandaily.com/media/storage/paper851/news/2001/02/22/News/American.Teens.Tops.In.Illegal.Drug.Use-1410111.shtml

But I think drugs are a bigger problem here.

6. The F-word is here to stay. I'm NROTC in college and have been around enlisted Marines. Its common place to replace ummm with F***in'. I myself say it more than I probably should.

This is a good idea for a thread...

S t e r e o t y p i n g   i s   w r o n g .

Look inside the person before you judge.  I read what Guinea said, it was perfectly said.

I'll say mine.  Thoughts people would think if they saw me walking down the street....:

- He wears black and converse, so he's an 'emo', that means he indefinitely writes poetry, cuts his wrists, crys 24/7, dates the same sex, worships the devil, is suicidal, etc...

- He has red hair, he's a nerd!

- He's Canadian, so he constantly says eh, lives in an igloo, has a pet beaver and he gets to ski every day of the year

- He listens to rock music, so he rebels against everyone

- He uses the computer a lot so he knows everything about them

- He wears a lot of accessories on his arms, so he's gay and cuts himself

- He's skinny so he's anorexic.

- He lives in a small city, so he's a farmer

- He's anti racist so he loves every person in the world

- He looks at the ground when he walks around, he must have no self confidence, which brings us back to the "emo" crap.

These are various things people think about me.  I think it's all a bunch of crap, 90% of those stereotypes are not true.  I say let people live their own lives, don't waste time judging them on first appearance.  Take every one of those stereotypes on that list and think, "Have I done that?"  If you do, please don't.  Its ticks people off!  I easily get sick of the 'emo' comments.  Sure, I wear black.  I wear Converse, I write poetry.  So?  Emo, is some load of crap people made up that groups a whole bunch of people that either wear black, are depressed, write poetry, wear Converse, etc into being, what people treat them as, a different race.  "A bunch of freaks, losers, just a bunch of lousy emos."  Thats what they say.  Doesn't that sound a little...stereotypical?  No?  Well what about this?  You wear black one day to school, and someone calls you an emo.  What are you gonna say?  No, I'm not.  They won't believe you.  You get an A+ in poetry class.  Apparently you're now an emo because of it.  I just think it's completely stupid and wrongJudge people on personality, after you've met them, not on first appearance.

LABELS ARE FOR J A R S, NOT FOR P E O P L E!

But then again We all base our opinions about people based on thier appreance.

Even if it is not the right thing to do.

Besides how well do we realy know another person?

You always hear interviews with the neighbors of some guy that killed his family

"he always seemed like a nice guy"

Stupidity Should Always be Painful

the only thing that helps me maintain my slender grip on reality is the friendship I share with my collection of singing potatoes.

Since I'm Russian, how about this one:

All Russians are communists... I'm not communists, in fact I really like capatalism.

As for emo, I think emo as that one kid who sounds like jingle bells when they walk because of all the silver chains they have on them and who sits in corners most of the day... of course this is most likely because of family troubles and not because they choose to be like this (as commonly thought)  And I see nothing wrong with black clothes... (except that you can see just about every piece of dust that falls on them)

I think that steryotypes are just ways to make life easier for people.  The mind has a way of putting everything into groups and seeking out patterns in objects and events.  And because our eyes are out most used sense, it's natural to see on person, see another and assume that the other is just like the first.
