BAT - Troubleshooting & General Discussion
ianpaschal replied to Jasoncw's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Mrqs: That's modern architecture, duh... I guess there are some problems with how BAT for Max applies the FSH files to the 3ds file and at the moment it looks like you have none of the texture FSH files on your 3ds model. I know Autovino was having some similar problems, maybe drop him a PM... -
Yoman: I love that crane. Makes for realistic harbors. Is it dutch? It reminds me of the big ones around Rotterdam. Speaking of which, I read about some very cool buildings in the Rotterdam harbor made out of old gravel silos.

It's a good BAT, but I can't help but think the building is quite ugly.. :/ Here's the latest from me:

Just the shape is unbearably ugly. It looks like a big cartoon mountain.

Did you make sure you selected only the top vertices? If you selected every vertex on the model, then it will collapse them all into a single infinitely small point. That's it becoming invisible. Make sure you select only the top ones.

question about making curtains in 3ds max
ianpaschal replied to kaos78414's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
here's how I make my curtains, and yes I use them a lot, here's a building that uses this technique: First I draw a sort of lighting bolt shape, but with a lot of back and forth. Then I extrude it but make loads of segments. Then convert to a poly. If you use vertex selection and turn on soft selection (this is also in the modifier roll) you can expand some parts, and tighten others. -
Yeah, last I heard, current copies run for around $3500. I get mine donated to me from Autodesk

w00t! I love internships (jobs are cooler but i'm too young) I worked one summer as an intern for MSC Software modeling jet turbine engines and I hope this summer to work with another studio that does photorealistic renderings of cars and stuff for Jeep and Toyota

Even if we needed this feature so bad that we decided to try it, I think it would take years to do. Furthermore, you'd have to swap in the rainy plugin folder every time you wanted rain, and your normal plugin folder when you didn't.

You only need to know how to think it. That's right, think. I didn't make a mistake. In such a field as 3d there are precious few situations where one right way to do anything exists. Normally there are dozens or even more ways to make something and as many ways to combine it with something else. This is where thinking it comes to play. Ability to construct mental map of what to do and in what order. Some choices you make now will open or alternatively block some roads way, way down the line... It is an excellent exercise for a brain, btw...quote> I know all too well what you mean. As someone who has taught many other people how to use 3ds max, I understand the thinking. And I'm quite good at that, although a lot of my "students" so called really smart students, are only smart because they can memorize and use all the different steps to redox equations in our chemistry class. I refuse to tell them how to model something outright, partly because, like you said, there is no correct way, and second, I consider the way I learned 3ds max the most valuable. I learned how 3ds max behaves. "That's right," behaves. "I didn't make a mistake." By experimenting and watching carefully what I did, and what result it produced, I learned how 3ds max behaves under a typical software stimulus-response pattern. For example, Seahawk wanted to know how to make a complex lattice on a building. I told him to make a box, sub-divide, blah blah, and then use the create shape from edges and render-able spline tools. "So knowing this, can you figure out how to make the lattice?" That's the thinking part. I don't show people how to do something, because chances are those steps are only applicable in specific situations such as a scene that comes with a tutorial. The concepts are more important that the specific procedure I think.

I think he said plain, so one without the painting. If you just want a deteriorated power plant.

Looking very good. That beard though... Looks MS Painted in

Yeah actually. After reading pnorrell's post I spent all of drafting class reading about the disaster. You're right El Burro, it is weak, but a collapsing shelter is very dangerous. It has already filled with rain water which is now some of the most highly radioactive waste on the planet, and a collapsed shelter also is prone to raising another dust cloud laced with radioactive particles to be scattered across Europe. Since this is actually such a threat, Yoman3 is right; a french firm has been hired to create a massive metal dome to enclose the entire dying shelter.

Originally posted by: SimFox I think you also confused about the meaning of backward compatibility. Program is backward compatible when it can open files made in previous versions. In this respect MAX is 100% backward compatible. The fact that you can not open in older versions files made with newer is pretty understandable if you take a minute to thing about structure of MAX and then structure of Max files. Unlike some graphic file they're not some sort of fixed pixels or something like that. they are just databases with the list of the modules and settings to each. New versions have new modules and even old are often rewritten so naturally older version is NOT capable to use them hence no way to open file from newer version in older.quote> I might be confused, but you might be as well. In my opinion it's almost always a given that you have the kind of compatibility that you're talking about. Word 2007 can obviously open Word 2003. What you described to me sounds like forward compatibility. Be it backward of forward, it frustrates me greatly that you cannot save as a older format. Word 2007 has a save to 2003 option. This basically strips the word file of the features only availible in 2007 and lets it be opened by Word 2003. In my opinion 3ds Max should do this as well. It's really silly when my friend has done a model of a building, nothing more than splines and boxes, and it can't be opened in older versions.

Simfox: You have to be kidding me! What a load of crap. Who needs a new version other than to get *****-slapped by Autodesk's horrible lack of backward compatability? Oh, and 2008 is actually pretty buggy compared to 8 at least. I never used 9 though...
-
Version 9 was last years edition. I guess they had some problem with the number 10. it goes: ...5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 2008.
-
yeah but I read "thinking if I'll make it" as "thinking what I'll make it"
-
I think it will be fine. If you're thinking about assigning your own use to it, I'd suggest an airport terminal. It looks born to be one.

Very nice work Jason. Do you think you might have a great time making a sandstone version? Just sort of yellowish grey textures instead of these marble ones? Cough... Just wondering....

Really it's called 3D Studio Max but the only time I've heard it called that regularly was when I was at some 3dsmax seminars from Ted Boardman.

Hi, Normally I don't dive into the MODing section, since I'm really just a BATer but I was doing a BAT that required some brick streets in it. I'd like these to match the brick streets in game, but the only texture I can find of it is the small 127 x 127 view in the Reader. Does anyone know where I could find a high res (512 x 512 maybe?) copy of the straight section to the herring-bone street textures? It would be really appreciated. Btw, I'm asking this in the MODing section because I figured that it was MODers who make street textures who might know where this is available. Thanks, Scipio

Alright, thanks so much.

Oh no, I can't find nofunk's post! damn it. stupid page flip somethingmerather. I take it though that this post will reveal it.... EDIT: Success!

Could you elaborate a bit farther? As for the darkness, that's just because I simulated night time as best I could. If you want to send me the camera and light scene I'll render a SC4 preview although every other time i've had problems with size (i'm working 1 max gu = 1 meter).
