Building Log: World Trade Center (Pre-9/11)
rubik3 replied to rubik3's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I'm just curious what your plans are to connect it to the rest of the WTC lot. Well I'll have to do some testing to see how the overpasses will act on varied slopes, but my plan is to release at least 3 lots. I'll probably do the same reward/landmark versions of the building, then I'll have two lots for the pedestrian overpasses. Though with the overpasses there will probably be like 6 versions of each one to go over each kind of network peice. Then I'll probably do yet another version of the overpasses because the ones connecting to the WTC lot will have to be offset and not centered over the road, which people may want so that they can use them elsewhere. Odd question, but what is wrong with the one that is on the STEX? If you are refering to the other Seven World Trade by NintendoMaster then I'll have to plead the fifth . I don't like downplaying other people's efforts so I'll just say that it's not quite up to my extreme attention to detail. Also everyone has a different style to their buildings, even if it's a real life replica, and I felt that I needed to complete the complex with a version in my own style. Just gorgeous! You are quite talented! I was at the site last weekend and every time I visit, I remember my memories and also seeing your lot on a daily basis helps me remember more as I try to place the original buildings in my mind in the empty space downtown. I'm glad I could help fill the void. Looking at the skyline of Manhatten now it's pretty easy to tell where the towers used to stand, how could anyone forget that skyline? But even after working on this project for so long I still find it hard to visualize the complex from looking at groundzero. The shear scale of the complex still throughs me for a loop whenever I look at it in SC. Here's another update for seven. The lighting on the back is getting close to finished, but now that it is lit up I need to fill the void in the entry windows so I'll probably be adding in some interior furniture. -

these lights look to me a bad way, try putting more, and less squarely... well as you did for the towers Well if you look at it in zoom 5 it looks much better. The night window textures are a nuesance as they tend to brighten up in further zooms. I plan on gonig back and redoing the night lighting on the towers and the hotel much like the lighting on 4-6. I finally found some time to work on 7 a little bit. Here's a pic showing the progress on the night lighting. -

Thanks Kenneth. If you hadn't have said anything it would've remained the wrong link for years to come. It's been a busy work week so I've had little time to work on seven. But expect a few night time shots in the next couple of days. Finalizing this project has been a little slow, but still expect it to make it into the Octoberfest schedule late in the month. -

Well I definately wouldn't say your's looks like crap. It's just the difference between professional model, and a model created by someone still learning the ins and outs of the program. GMax and it's counterparts take years to fully master, and after 5 years of working with rendering programs, I still am learning new things. So don't feel too bad that mine might be better than yours, just try to look at what i did differently and try to learn from it. FYI the lots have been updated on the STEX. The reward and landmark lots only include an icon update, but the construction includes an update that fixes the overlay texture problem. Make sure to update the texture pack as well. -

Well I might decide to do the WFC, but it's far down the line if I do. Here's a few more updated shots of the entries on 7wt. The overpasses aren't completely finished yet as they will be exported on their own, but the general shapes and textures are there. The left entry which is pretty much done. I will probably change the doors around a little though as I think they need to be full glass doors. The right entry is also pretty close to done, but again I need to redo the doors. You can also see the finished loading dock complete with a semi-truck provided by G. W. Chapman at www.3dcafe.com . -

Well I haven't completely decided exactly what I want to do for the memorial version but I have a few ideas. I'll probably be trying to include some design elements of the submitted designs that didn't end up being chosen. I finally get around to reworking the loading dock. I haven't added in all of the detail yet, but here is what I've done so far. -

I'm not sure why they made it so small. I think it was one of the biggest complaints with RH. The Seafirst Tower is supposed to be 3/4 the heighth of the ESB but as you can see in that pic it's about 1/2 the size. -

Well this project still has a few months left in it. Along with 7 world trade, I want to return to the original buildings and make a few updates. I also have plans for a memorial version of the lot, so there is still a lot of work to do. So don't stop visiting this thread yet, there is still alot to come. Well I did a quick search and it seems as though most of the old images have been deleted or else I would point you to a different thread. But here is a pic of the Sea-first center with a few other landmarks. -

Here's what I've compiled, based on the far shots of the wider crossing: Well the main overpass has looked different in every picture I've seen so far. Even these two pics on emporis look completely different. http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=177968 http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=197701 . So I think I just have to pick which pic to go off of. Interestingly, 75% of the metal from the sculpture has been recovered. The sculpture will be restored to its original condition by Calder's estate, and most likely placed in either the new complex or Battery Park. Hmm, last I heard they were still undecided whether to restore it or display it in it's deformed state. I'm glad his son decided to restore it though. 7WTC looks great! I love how good that loading dock looks. Well too bad I have to change it all now . I just found this pic showing the real location of the loading dock. -

Ahh, well that makes sense. Here's a couple of shots of the backside of the building where I had to fake a lot of the entry detail. If someone can find some closeups of that entry i'll change it, but apart from some door detailing and some texture tweaks I think this side is done. -

What I'm planning to do is go into the LE and put the 7th building in the grassy area on the WTC complex lot. Well the 7th building wasn't really part of the complex. It was a privately owned building unlike the rest of the complex, and it sat across from the WTC to the left of the TE'd avenue. So placing it in the grassy area wouldn't be accurate and that grassy area is actually there, part of the WFC complex though in real life it's not quite as big. I decided to model the red sculpture (Bent Propellor, Alexander Calder). It's compressed in a zip file. I also included a PSD format texture of the sculptor's signature color, Calder Red. Wow, great job. I always sucks at freeform sculpture modelling so this is a load off my back. What I'll probably do, unless you want to do it, is create a prop out of it so that it will respond to a hover query. Then I can either include it in the prop pack I'll be releasing for this building (with proper credits of course), or give it to you to release as a single prop that I can include it as a linked dependecy, it's your call. You should build the bridge, to the WTC, and the overhead hanging thingy above Vessay Street. Also, the enterence looks a little plain, the glass entry way is just...there. It doesn't quite look how I remembered, I can't explain why, I'll try to find you some more pictures. Well the base isn't done yet, hence no closeup of it. Both overpasses will be done and the large overpass (not the tubular one) is the only thing I need pictures of. I've got pretty much everything else covered except for the loading dock. And FYI you can edit one post instead of making multiple posts in a row. Multiple small posts makes for less info per page....just something to keep in mind. Any chance you could release the texture you used for the main wall? (If it is a texture....) Also, is this in 3ds or Gmax? Well unfortunately it is a texture I created for a company when I used to work for them, so it is actually their texture and I can't start giving it out. And it is in Gmax, though I should have done it in 3ds. But for some reason I started in Gmax and by the time I thought about 3ds I was done with the floors and windows. -

Thanks Grover, but apart from one pic I've seen them all. But that one pic is a much needed one as it shows a little more detail on that overpass then I've seen before. And that is basically the only thing I need now apart from the rear entrance. I got a pretty good idea of the rear entrance from this video, http://911review.org/Media/Bld7.mov , but it doesn't show the close up detail I would like. That movie also shows just how much damage the building recieved from the towers collapsing and the fires that engulfed the front of the building shortly before it collapsed. -

Well I might take it on in a couple of months. But I want to get this project completely finished before I do. I just found this nighttime shot of the plaza with Ideogram in the foreground. http://www.slippyvillage.com/photos/gv2001/P3220007.jpg that I thought I would share. I might have to go back and change 4-6 now that I have a pic of the twinkle lights on top of them. -

rubik3 replied to rubik3's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
A question for you rubik, will the 7th building be a prop or a building? It will most likely be a prop. Why, do you have a preference? As for the windows I created my own texture map from a SC screenshot. I tweaked it quite a bit adding blur and distortion, then added in a black tint. Then I made 4 versions with slightly different color hues and created 8 materials from them with differing opacity values. -

Well I think Will Wright has had that vision ever since the first SC. It's only a matter of time until computer power is able to handle it, and with the Sims2 supposedly being completely 3d it might very well be a possibility for the assumed SC5. It is definately something that Maxis wants to do...they are just waiting for Bill Gates to come up with the next big thing. Thanks FMorel. I'll make sure to let others at the BSC know about the problem and the solution. But seeing as it isn't a modd on this site I don't think that there will be too many problems reported. Well it was a good weekend and I was able to get a lot of Seven WT done. As you can see it's pretty close to finished, but I still have quite a few small details to add to the base. I pretty much have all the images of the building I need unless somebody can find a pic of the back side of the building (the long wall facing away from the WTC) or pics of the large pedestrian overpass (not the tubular one) -

Looking good guys. If I can ever get away from my New York and Kuala Lumpur trips I'll help you out . I have been wanting to do some hometown buildings for quite a while now, but other projects have kept me away. -

Miles - This is what you need to download. 4 prop packs that contains all of the buildings and props. The texture pack which contains the avenue textures. Then you can pick which of the 3 lots you want to download. I fixed my problem with a slight change in the mod, I just deleted the LTEXT file that had Disable Future Reconstruction. So where was that LText file located...which modd? -

Yes, welcome Miles, glad to see you finally found SC4. When you do purchase the game you'll notice that Maxis has already done the Seafirst Center as well as a lot of other landmarks. If you want to download the WTC just click on the link in my signature. -

Well I'm pretty sure that's not the culprit, though it looks like Equinox has the problematic lot/modd on his computer as well. The first thing that made me think this is that in his STEX screenshot it doesn't show the make historical as changed. Then I downloaded it and had a good hard look at it and he doesn't overwrite any of the original captions, just created new ones. So his Modd is perfectly fine and the only thing he actually overwrites is the game's UIs, not the captions in them. It is all done correctly and the only problem it will cause is if another lot or modd modifies the game's UIs. But now we know there are two problematic lots/modds since Equinox's make historical checkbox is ok. -

rubik3 replied to rubik3's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Well that is supposed to say make historic. My guess is that you have a lot installed that overwrites the label of that function. Sorry but I can't do anything about that. I would suggest you try to figure out the lot that is causing it and contact the creator to have him correct the error. I also noticed that where it says sufficient power? it should say only Powered. As well as customers/profits should only say Customers, and Local Pollution should only say Pollution. This makes me even more sure that you have one or two lots installed that weren't created correctly. -

Well I'm glad I was able to meet everybodies expectations. It was a tough job and took forever, but it was well worth it. I'm just glad there were people like Bigmac, DoubleJ2K, and Kid_a to help in providing the images I needed to include all of the neccesary detail. I just stumbled upon this page, and it has the most detailed satellite shot of ground zero that I've seen. It may be a little painful to view the site, but it also includes great detail shots of a lot of the surrounding buildings in lower Manhatten. http://thewebfairy.com/911/crimescene/ BTW I've decided to model Seven World Trade. Expect it to be released sometime in late October. Sorry NintendoMaster, but I noticed a few errors in your version and I feel that my complex isn't finished without it. -

Great pics Kenneth, that is one nice looking Manhatten. I'll see what I can do about the crime. It's a known problem, we're just trying to figure out how big of a problem it is. There should be a little bit of crime, but not a horrific amount. impossible i cannot create avenue-oneway intersection in anyway or anywhere cannot build ave. continue from oneway. what wrong with simcity thai version?? Well I don't know what to tell you. From what you've posted you're doing everything right, and it should connect. Try bulldozing the lot and rebuilding it. It should automatically connect the oneways for you but you'll need to change the direction of them. The subway props are not aligned. The subway entrance prop is not seen together on the main subway station structure, but a tile or two apart: TY, that will be slated for change. - Demolishing any subway tracks under the lot will require that you to demolish the entire WTC lot as well. This was brought to my attention a few days ago, but I'm not sure if there is a way to control that or not. Either way I need to add that to the readme. One way roads can be placed on opposite direction at each end of the custom road, which means that I can create a left hand drive road on one end and a right hand drive road on the other. It might not be a big deal, but during a UDI mission, a car will disappear at the exiting end of the custom road. Well there might be a way to fix that, but along with not knowing how, it would prevent the LHD versions of the game to work with the lot. - The lot thumbnail doesn't have a black border, unlike the rest of the default landmark thumbnails. Andreas Roth of the German Site www.simszone.de noticed this when he did the translation and provided me an updated version. It will be included with the next update, which I hope to make the final versions. -

Mr V. - from that animation it looks like you are doing everything perfectly. Try this, bulldoze the 4 tiles of avenue running next to the lot, then try to do the oneway to avenue transition. Then try to cross the other avenue over the intersection. 4finger - Well it is definately the base texture pack that is missing, at least missing ingame. There has been one other report of this problem, but it didn't affect gameplay, just how it looks in the LE. So try moving the texture pack .dat file from the program files/plugins folder to your my documents/plugins folder and let me know if it helped any. -
