I'm proud to say I've done all of those, and also add shoe shiner and golf grounds keeper, and maybe even more if I could remember, as a yute. Back on subject, I am a supervisory clinical social worker. (Now you can laugh. )
  2. About product code

This is definitely an issue that should be discussed w/ the manufacturer and not here. Thread closed.

  7. Member of the Month June 2007 Ceremonies

Way to go boss!!! You really do have the vision! Congratulations ___idiotbox, our membership really does have class!
  8. Creationism vs. Evolution

Oh? I thought this thread was a discussion and a sharing, like our other threads containing sensitive or at least potentially intense subjects in the Off Topic Forums, not a contest.
  9. Creationism vs. Evolution

Sorry Manticorefan, the thread didn't devolve into anything. Members, even including people who believe in creation like myself, shared their points of view. Period. It sounds like from your last post that you have plenty of other places to go if you want to stir things up.
  10. Is Tilteded Mill Aware of Us?

Because that's part of Dirk's larger vision for his website. He's gotten the attention of a lot people involved in these types of games and even though it would be impossible and impractical to even think about pleasing everyone it's still exciting to see what will happen next.
  11. Is video-game addiction a mental disorder?

It certainly didn't hurt John Amos's, Jimmy Walker's, or Janet Jackson's careers either!
  12. Favorite Show

Currently my favorite shows on tv right now are the Law and Order franchise, Smallville, and the 2000's version of BattleStar Galactica. There are a lot older shows that easily fit my favorites list and I can either watch the repeats over and over or I wish they would bring them back: -M*A*S*H -My all time favorite tv show period. -FireFly: why oh why did it take Serenity for me to discover the series?? It had a great ensemble w/ the best chemistry (I would hope a new series would resurrect Wash & Book) and it was a true sci-fi/western hybrid. -Wiseguy: it had the coolest villains! -The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr.: The coolest B movie actor -Alfred Hitch***** Presents: love them twist endings! (love our censor!) -The '90's version of The Outer Limits -The '90's version of The Untouchables: I love the Ness/Capone battles even though it's mostly myth. -The Wild Wild West: coolest opening sequence! -Mission Impossible: The original tv con game/sting version, not the movie star Tom Cruise playing James Bond version. -Star Trek Classic and TNG (right up to "The Best of Both Worlds" before the background music lost its zip) -Columbo: I always liked how the working class detective outsmarted murderers that underestimated him. -The Twilight Zone, including remakes in the 70's and a few years back on UPN put ordinary people in extraordinary situations. -I could probably name up to at least dozen of comedies fr the'70's. -I think that Roots is tv's finest hour (or 12 hours!) -I'm going to miss StarGate SG-1, even w/out Jack O'Neill. -Even though I don't watch it regularly, I've got a LOT of respect for the impact that The Simpsons has on modern culture. I think it became good when the focus went fr Bart to Homer. -I hope Law and Order lasts forever! (And I hope Jack McCoy becomes the new D.A.!)

See? lolquote> Except that the medical people in question aren't deciding about addiction; they are deciding about a disorder. A very rough (nonclinical) rule of thumb (of many) could be that something might fit the definition if the "good times" are ruining a life.
  14. Is video-game addiction a mental disorder?

Usually one of the best ways for someone who has questions about if something has become a harmful addiction is to solicit feedback from people they trust in Real Life that can give honest nonjudgemental observations and then start to make inquiries fr RL professionals about potential thoughts and observations.
  15. Is video-game addiction a mental disorder?

Well clinically something is generally considered a "disorder" if it affects social functioning.
  16. It might be a different generation, there are some thing I remember doing w/ my parents growing up in the country that I don't do w/ my kiddoes raising them in the city. But I was actually encouraged by this article, Video games encourage family bonding, mostly b/c I do play computer games w/ them. As a parent I share what my likes and passions w/ my children just as my father shared what he liked w/ my brothers and me. He had thing for gardening, fishing, nature, and sports (I think he like too much tv though! ). Part of it though is that my kiddoes and I do do other things such as go to various museums, parks, and city festivals, etc.and that's probably key. So, new generation or old school in a new package?

  18. Sosa Hits 600th Homer

Count me as someone who hoped that the Sosa/McGwire homerun chase (was '99?) wasn't steriod induced. That was the one event that brought me back into paying attention to baseball after the '94 strike cancelled the World Series (and I still haven't cared that much for MLB since!) Otherwise if Ken Griffey Jr. wasn't going to be the one to chase Hank Aaron's career record I was hoping it would be Sammy Sosa. Meanwhile it's great to see Jr. back in fine form again!
  19. The New Official Next Generation Sim City Wish List

To start out with, here is my original list from simcity.ea.com, dusted off from a few years back, maybe even before I was asked to join the SimTropolis staff, slightly edited for this thread. I look back at it and I still want this stuff in my next game! (Oh and bunnies for whoever can find what I actually wrote for SimTropolis a few years back when I spelled out some specific examples of this list for an SC5 collaboration way back in the day!) -------- fr simcity.ea.com circa May-Oct. '04 I've played Sim City since 1990 and have looked forward to every sequel and expansion, each one improving over the other. SC3K & 3K Deluxe gave us great graphics and introduced us to Landmarks, although they originally weren't functional. In SC4, the BAT gamers corrected that. In SC4 I really do love the game's new direction of creating a region with multiple cities with potentially different goals and different potential rewards for each city. Rush Hour introduced story lines & drama into the game for the first time (kind of). But for all of the variety of the custom content I still want to find even more ways to make my cities as diverse and unique and yet interrelated as much as possible. To me the solution would be for the next version of the game to create a way for the cities to be more interactive, connected, and yet specialized. In the current version of Sim City the specialization and interactivity tends to cut across cities being zoned for Residential/Commercial/Industrial (R/C/I) and the utility deals they can share. I definitely want to keep those, b/c that’s how cities are in Real Life and it's part of the fun of city planning. But I also think it would be great for a region to have a capitol city, along with other "cities" (lots/territories, you name the semantics) dedicated to, but not exclusively limited to, education, tourism, and or trade. I wouldn’t quite call these zones, but part of the design would include city desirability levels in a regional radial layout based on businesses specifically created for tourism, education, trade, and government. A successful region would contain various mixes and balances of these desirables, with Simcitizens migrating to whatever desirable is more appealing to them. Part of the diversity of the desirables would mean having temperature and precipitation climate controls to promote differing types of tourism (i.e. snowy and mountainous regions for ski resorts, national parks in heavily forested areas, warmer climes for beaches, deserts for gambling or even ghost town attractions, etc.) and distinctive resources for types of transportation and trade (i.e. coal/oil/gold mining towns), specialized agriculture (i.e. cattle/llamas vs. corn/bananas) or harbor trade towns. All of these could be related to weather and geography. It would also mean greater interdependence on transportation and influence between cities. This would include specialized cities having radial impacts of tourism, education, or trade desirability extending past the city to within the region, just like the schools and police and fire stations have within the borders of each city. I’d like to see the borders of a city from a neighboring city w/ the capability of readily moving between cities w/out having to go into god mode. Possibly a My Sim could have greater travel capability and let us see journeys between cities via highway, rail, plane, or rail to go to college or engage in commerce or pleasure. And it would mean having the Capital City of the region delegating resources between cities. An example would be taking funds from a heavy commercial/industrial complex that generates simoleons hand-over-fist with nothing to spend it on to contribute to a "city" that consists of a national forest (or any other region-unique landmark) with minimal tax generating R/C/I that still needs funds to operate. That would pretty much be the limit given to a "governor"; everything else would still be delegated to the mayors or the god mode. A Capitol City would, however, have access to a variety of landmarks w/ specific regional stats to assist in making the fund delegation decisions. There would be lots of diversity and compatibility within each type of desirability to give a city a local ambience and flavor. A college town could be nestled in a ski resort while a gambling mecca could feature the region’s largest airport. And just as SC4 began to do, each type of city would have its own special line of rewards and or landmarks. I’m a middle aged social worker and not a techie so I do not know if incorporating these would involve an expansion or sequel, nor do I know the software engineering involved or system requirements for current computers to make these changes. Please don’t kill my computer like other games do. The one thing I do know and one of the reasons I am proud to be a part of the fandom is that our artisans are already doing fantastic job, as the fansites obviously demonstrate. So keep the custom content and in and rolling in the next version and let the fans create and contribute to our heart’s content. Oh and keep in at least little whimsy a la llama Will Wright for those of us who respect that Real Life still matters considerably more but want to escape it fr time to time. ---- Alrighty guys and gals I just showed mine (a few years back! ). Go and show ‘em yours!

Yet we could go to other posts here and in other threads where members suggest that that SimTropolis has too much staff or they respond too quickly and too many people are being caught. Okay... We accept a certain amount of dissonance as being okay b/c its an indicator of the vitality and involvement of the membership of a pretty big fansite with a big and a vastly diverse fanbase. But we also accept, by definition, that just like the advisors in the game, we're not going to get 100% membership satisfaction either way no matter what. And if we do then get that mythical 100% satisfaction then that could be an indicator that the site would probably have become moribund and not worth arguing about anyway. But in terms of expectations, we do read the posts and we do read the p.m.'s and I would really hope that individual members respect that if staff don't respond in a certain way that they would like that it's not the equivalent of letting a house stay on fire. We're not only looking at complaints as simple case manager to meagerly put out fires, but we're also looking at trends and perceptions, how the membership responds to what as a whole, and also sometimes for the maturity of how individual members themselves respond or respond back to what they are seeing and they are wanting. All of this in planning the direction of the site. But, as SkiGeek implied, if we do this 24/7 then we're probably neglecting RL families, careers, and lives that matter much more in the long run than a website or a computer game and we hope the majority of the membership has enough class to keep a similar perspective.
  22. Cities Unlimited

Gotta appreciate the vision of the Dirktator!
  23. The Tardis

I only saw two seasons of it fr the Sci Fi Channel. I was expecting it to be cheesy. It kind of is, but at least it was still fun. So far I l like Eccleston. I liked his enthusiasm. I actually think he is average looking, but that is a good thing b/c it's cool to see have non movie star looking people have lots of fun!
  24. A BBC article on Americans and Alcohol

I personally think that it is sad statement on the human condition that historically one of the more irresponsible actions someone can take is considered one of the most adult. I respect that consuming alcohol is a choice and mostly socially acceptable, but as long as it considered something that defines adulthood the more likely that yutes will use it to justify childish and dangerous acts.
