Yeah, why aren't members of the team posting more!? Oh yeah, I have answers to that... projects, homework, spring cleaning, trumpet, and Thursday comedies... Speaking of which... But anyways... Todd: 1. How's that for a cornice? I only added one cornice, because it only looks like there was only one at any point in time. Although if the right building deserves one as well, so be it. Subsequently, I don't think I'll include cornices in the final upload. Although I don't always agree with Francis on accuracy, this is a case where accuracy should probably be taken into account. There isn't a cornice now, I'm not great at making them, I'll leave it at that. 2. I scaled the ornaments out until [most of them] were at .1 meters. I might have missed a few, just warning ya. It doesn't look like it did much, but I'll leave that up for discussion. 3. I added about 20% contrast (Although that might be on the basis of 120% for Gimp, in which case it would be 16.66%) to the brick texture. More? Too much? I don't have an acquired eye for brick textures. 4. Brownstones? If you say so. 5. iPzkpfw? Strange acronym, awesome tank. By the way, what's with the recent influx of people with avatars resembling iPod ads around here? Coincidence? Or is there some government reimbursement? Or some other reason? I've essentially been offline for a week and a half. Aaron Graham: Pretty good start with that building, I'll have to see more updates before I can add real input. All I think I can say at this point is that the center mullion on the door (I think it's called a lock rail) looks a little high. It looks like it should be in line with the window's center mullion. But that's all, great start! Parisian: 575 Fifth Avenue... (googles it) Oh, yeah, that one! That should be a fine addition to the game; a simple boxy building to fill in downtowns is always welcome! On a side note, I'm running a small side project right now with gmax. Does anyone know a way to export with it or where I can get Gmax Render Suite nowadays? I searched for hours, and I got nothin'. I suppose I could download the free 3dsMax trial, but I don't have a .edu email. Ideas? Sorry for posting so much text without breaking it with a smiley or two... how's this to make it up? Okay, have a great weekend everyone! Think happy thoughts! -

Alright, I survived the international waters! Don't look so surprised... ...Then again, them dolphins are vicious! Francesco or "Francis": Another thing, i believe that the models do have a very definite rundown feeling. This isn't a bad thing, but the real buildings seems to be quite well-kept. Right now i believe that your models do have too much a "dirty" feeling. Well, it's a difficult balance. Some people like run-down buildings, some don't. I can't please everyone, so I please everyone I can (plus, I like run-down buildings more. I don't know why). Todd: As for the new buildings, you picked them for their details, now bring out those details so that the can be noticed. See how much better 99 looks with those nice noticable ornaments around the windows? Also, it looks like their cornices were stripped off for some absurd reson, stick a generic one up there just so that they don't look like boxes (or not, depending on how it looks in comparison with the others) 1. Since I can't really scale the ornaments out (they're prettymuch flat with the wall), I scaled them up 150% or so, although it varied based on specifics. Referring to the picture below, the part to the left of the red line is the former ornaments and the part to the right is the revised. And while we're at it, I made new window textures, air conditioners, graffiti and vintage, or "nostalgic" advertisements. 2. For cornices, I'm going with "not", because there aren't actually any cornices. That's the biggest problem with the building. I could put one up that isn't too elaborate and blends in, if there's a good reason to mess with the truth. And welcome to the new members, jackreid, Parisian, and Feindbold (more or less), I look forward collaborating! Also, thanks to Vlasky for taking inventory on current NYBT members. I think that's all. Y'all have a good week. I mean it. -
I'll be in the Bahamas next week, April 16th to the 23rd! First time going abroad. Woohoo! I don't expect much Internet access, so I'll see everyone afterwards. Oh, and I'm not jumping a fence... I'm going there legally.

Yeah! We now have two Todds! Except one of them is named Francis... Oh well! Three cheers for coffee, BATing and Russian cloning! Look! New BATs! So this one's 109 Madison Street. I really liked the facade... so I picked it. On a personal note, last Wednesday I learned its pronounced fa-çade, not fa-kade; more proof that I'm not a real architect yet. But anyways, The front is "done", except for some minor tweaks. I need to fix the texture of the door on the left, the faded part of the awnings on the right are too bright, the windows might need some work, air conditioners need to be added, and I may change the blinds around a little bit. I don't live anywhere near a city or even a large apartment building, so I need someone who knows the answer to this question: Do people in apartment buildings put up their own window blinds, or do they come built in with the room? I also need to add graffiti, props in the back, and window variations in the back, but you can't see them so it's beside the point. As for the roof, it's kind of done, but there are some things that need work. The most obvious problem at this point is that the roof access on the right is super-bright. After all, "Subtly is key in BATing!". Otherwise, the doors on the roof accesses need some work, the six-pack-smokestack-things need some texturing work, but nothing major for either. So what does everyone think? Meanwhile, two buildings over at 99 Madison Street, I haven't changed much. I revamped the white brick texture, added a mess of graffiti on the right side and scaled the facade ornaments out 150%. By now they're several times larger than they're supposed to be, so I'm not quite sure what to do if their depth still isn't visible enough. Comments? Anyways, that's all. Y'all have a good week! Postscript: I'll be abroad (first time leaving the USA!) between April 16th and 23rd. So don't bother me. -
Ha Ha! I've figured it out!!1!!!1! " " is a song by a band named Vessels... which conveniently is from your home country of UK... even though the band is based hundreds of miles away from Portsmouth... but still... "Vessels" also applies to boats, such as the one in the picture... I'm not quite sure what to derive from that... Maybe it has something to do with how you make stations! And when combined with clouds and vessels... you get... This!1!!1!! It's called the "Cloud", it's a vessel, specifically a station vessel and a weather ship having to do with clouds ("During 1942, Sea Cloud mostly served as a weather ship at Weather Patrol Station Number Two" -Wikipedia) Sooo... Tell me I'm wrong! Tell me I didn't get it exactly right! You're plotting something with that ship! Or maybe my logic is completely messed up. Your opinion.

Busy week (RL!! Argh!) for me. I didn't do anything. Although it's been a pretty good April Fool's Day for me. And to any Frenchy-Frenchmen out there: Je suis le poisson d'avril! Ils rient de moi. UrbanLatinFemale/Alexis: I'll be honest, I wouldn't know where to begin. I might be able to make graffiti props based on crime (like the chalk outlines you see), but age would be difficult. Todd: What would you suggest specifically to make the facade more charismatic? Scale the ornate details to 150% or so? As for the wall texture, I think I'll just add some brick contrast, edit some mortar texture plagiarized off the interwebs, and smack it on there in a way that fits. Then again, I'm not sure what to do with the mortar because it's hard to see it in Google Street View, and I question how visible it actually should be. I like penguins... and ducks... I have a pet bird... babble babble... Sorry I never replied to what Stalin is playing. It took me some time to realise you say "IOSEF" instead of "LOSEF" and then I had to figure out what Iosef meant. And to answer the question: he's admiring a screenshot of 3ds Max from Wikipedia. Because Todd can afford 3ds Max. Then again, he probably has a job. Hey, wait! I have a [summer] job! Why can't I afford 3ds Max!? Oh right, because it's filing papers for three times less than minimum wage in the basement of a University. It's still the best I could do. Vlasky: Thank you Wikipedia! Aaron: Man, that sucks! I've been pretty lucky, but when virus karma hits, I'll at least have some important files backed up. Well, I wish you the best of luck! BoxCarRacer: Ditto. Except for the word "stoop"... and "doughnut". The former is just fun to say and the latter is just delicious. Although I guess they're not towns. GuerrilaWarfare: I saw that movie... although it was a mockumentary. It wasn't bad. I don't have anything productive today. It's just a long weekend so I thought I'd get a post in. Y'all have a goodly good Good Friday! -

Well, Nascar is rained out so I guess I'll be getting something important done. How 'bout BATing! There are some things I'm considering, but for all I know, it could be done, it could be miles away from done. Probably the latter, but we'll see. On to the personal responses! Vlasky: I went on a 24-hour-or-so-vacation in Red Hook, New York this weekend. That's about 30 miles from Poughkeepsie, NY... hmm...*hint hint* Todd: Are you denying that your life is epic? Or did I simply over-epic the picture? And what's the big idea about using that creepy smiley as your STEX avatar!?! You tryin' to scare away the paying, I mean, regular customers, err, downloaders? I'm watching you! Brandon: I wonder if UPS or FedEx ships to Antarctica or Siberia... Hmm... Hanson: I like it already! It's going to look pretty great when you add window mullions and a roof texture! Antonio: Consider it as a personal consideration. And thanks for celebrating your 500th post at the NYBT thread! Now we own the copyright! Mwa ha ha... I think that's all. Y'all have a good week! I mean it! -

Let's see... I have good bit to write up on: Todd: I don't know whether to laugh or worry... and I can see why my friend Rick finds your personality so interesting... My Summarization of Todd: Yeah, that's not stereotyping or exaggerating Russians, college students or your love of coffee at all. Also, that smiley was pretty funny, I have to admit. I sorta want to put it on a tee-shirt... and maybe I'll wear it if I ever happen to visit Alexandria, Louisiana... Aaron: I'm not gonna lie, that looks really awesome! I think you picked a really good building because, personally, I like how the walls aren't perfectly straight and they have some character. Keep up the good work! (and, of course, listen to the other people, I agree with them too.) Rick: Say hi to Todd. Assuming no one minds, I invited someone in my French class that does a little CAD to come check out NYBT's thread. On to the picture! By the way, I chose to do Two Bridges for the next pack of buildings. This is 99 Madison Street. 'Case anyone was wondering. As you can see, I haven't textured it yet, because I want to get some opinions: 1. What should I do with graffiti (red arrows)? Earlier I was methodically applying planes of graffiti one by one, but now I have the resources to just apply a massive amount of it. Does it look better? Worse? The reason I decided to look into the issue was because of this picture, but I'm up for ideas. 2. What do I do with roof junk? I like to have a roof densely populated with lots of little things, but I don't want it to look unrealistic. Keep in mind that I have satellite pictures I'm following. Lots of little stuff that more or less blends in when it's textured? Less stuff? What to do? I think that's everything, I'm going to texture these now and then check your opinions later tonight or tomorrow. How is it that I always write these replies that are so friggin' long?! Oh well, y'all have a good Friday. -

I've had one heck of a crazy week, but this thread just made my day! That, and tomorrow's Friday. Gwail: Cool! I really like how you copied the exact roof texture from Google Maps, or something... and those industrial sash windows look pretty... what do the cool kids say these days? EPIC? I can't wait to see it on the STEX! Aaron: I'm glad you kept faith in the Transportation Building- it's starting to come together nicely. And those Bronx apartments are looking very nice at their current stage. I might suggest adding more random grunge-y grime on the roof and playing around with the roof access, but other than that, I'm looking forward to the next update! PS: I would hope you plan to add some variety to the window colors on both models, they look a bit to uniform for my liking. Todd: Still here, eh? I don't have any progress to post. All I did while I was offline was add the query sound to 112 Mott St. And boy, was I doing it wrong! But I eventually figured it out. I'll attach the query sound to this message... it's a bunch of guys singing the Italian National Anthem. Anyways, I'm still trying to figure out what to do for the next pack of buildings. Little Germany turned out to be too "Medium Wealth-y" for my liking, so I scrapped the project. If anyone has any suggestions for LOW WEALTH buildings around 5 stories or so in a certain neighborhood, preferably in Lower Manhattan, please go and post 'em cause I'm a bit stuck in that field. If no one has anything to say, I'm going to render the other Little Italy shops this weekend. Y'all have a good Friday! -

Todd, I don't think I'll be able to "bear" any more puns! Oh noes! There's another one! Change the subject! With a picture! What's there to say? All I did was mess with the saturation on the bright red brick one and play with the roof texture by adding blending-out grime around the edges. It's not much, but the details are what make a good BAT. You didn't suggest anything else for the current models, so I'm going to make some geometry for the next pack, Little Germany that is. Sorry, but they didn't have a Little Soviet Union or a Little Russia for me to do. And anyways, you can't make Russia "little". It's too damn large to start with. I'm also playing around with custom query sounds, thanks to the indirect help from Pegasus. I haven't done it successfully yet, but a little more work and I think I can get it. How hard could it be- (Famous last words, I have a strong feeling this will take a number of tries). With any luck, I'll put the Italian National Anthem on the Little Italy Shops you've seen. Then the kickass factor on these will be, like, 27! Or something. I think that's all I have to say. I'll probably just stop talking and go to sleep. Good night, and have a good Tuesday y'all! -

Okay, I'm back from Boston. Kryptowhite/Al has a nice city, although the trip wasn't exactly perfect. For one, I didn't win, but the people who did are a helluva lot smarter than I am. Second, the Prudential Center, then the John Hancock Center gave me vertigo on the way into the city. Third, your transportation system, between the T, Big Dig, and Mass Turnpike were too much to handle. And finally, I couldn't sleep well. The hotel had some form of emergency service going by every half hour, and the college kids next door kept slamming doors. Yet believe it or not, it was a good trip and I fully enjoyed it. It's just you can tell by my sob story that I'm not cut out for the city. Oh, and I celebrated my 1st anniversary on Simtropolis yesterday. Dang, it's been a whole year?! Vlasky: At first I thought it was Radio City Music Hall, but I guess not. I even searched "built in 1932 New York art deco building", but all I got was a list. Maybe as you reveal more I'll be able to get it. Just don't tell us! We'll slowly figure it out! Well, Todd must be hibernating or taking exams or just busy with RL, so I'll just post now. I told you I was going to do stuff to 109 Mott St, and this is what. Ever since I more or less "discovered" and back windows of the building on Bing Maps, I decided to revise them. I also kept a little sticky note on my desk of what Todd said about "subtlety is key in BATing". So with that in mind, how'd I do? I haven't yet done back nitemapping and window variation int the back, nor have I darkened the edges of the roof textures or desaturated/darkened the bright red brick, two things that I wanted to get done tonight. I know there's a lot of people who want me to just upload them (including myself), but if you hold out for a little bit longer, the kickass factor on these could be, like, 15. So keep waiting! By the way, Todd, tell Jason he did a good job with that brick-making tutorial he did. I've been able to use it a whole mess of times in the past few weeks! Alright, have a good week y'all! -
For the first one, try pressing "O" in your keyboard. By the way, that's the letter, not zero... although you probably figured that out... I don't know quite what causes this problem, but I think it has to do with your computer rendering hardware. I guess direct3d or something needs more processing power than it has when there are problems like this. All I know is that you're in a wireframe-like mode and it'll put boxes around everything (as it did in the picture). As for your second problem, I don't know what's quite going on, so here's my guess: your mapping coordinates are off. This is probably the result of using the Edit Mesh modifier and adjusting vertexes. The vertexes move, the faces are in new places, the textures can't align themselves. As far as I know, a UVW Map [modifier] will fix this problem. Just be sure to adjust the UVW map to your liking. At least, I think that'll solve the problem. I haven't the experience to be sure, but I think that. So go ahead and try it out. Uh, I guess that covers everything. For now. -JTF2010

Sorry 'bout my lack of posting for the last three whole days. Midterms, essays, notes, RL, you know how it is! As for the actual reason you're here...the BATs...I'm glad you like 'em! You Barry Sanders Project guys are pretty notable BATers, so it's good to hear that you like the work we're doing here at NYBT. BTW, are you in college? You post at a pretty reasonable time for your time zone. Compared to Todd. Although I guess it's his prerogative. Aaron: It's certainly understandable, and it's happened countless times to me as well. Times change, maybe now you're not as attracted to something as you previously were. If you're still willing to pursue the Transportation Building, that's what we're here for, and you've got our support. Personally, I think it was looking good. Paul, if you don't mind [first names] as well: Well, I'm glad you like it, too! Todd: I still don't know what a Sovietski is. Was someone fail-ish-ly trying to make Soviets cute or less intimidating during the 1980s or something? Anyway, what do you think of the models? I'm going to work on 109 Mott St some, but if you like 129, I'll export it. Also, I added some generic graffiti to the back of 112 Mott Street, just because I felt like it and t'was looking bland. Gwail (lacking name) : Well, Todd did do a pretty good job. Just my opinion. And as for the building, I'm glad you like it! That seems to be the general concensus, so hopefully I'll render it soon. As for me actually sweating while making it, I think you're a little inaccurate. But whatever. I've broken, like 16 copyright laws on this forum, haven't I? I'm not going to be able to post this weekend (at least, not progress) as I will be in Boston, competing in this state math competition thing. I'll be in the city from early Friday afternoon to Saturday, I think. 'Gonna go show Eastern Massachusetts (including Kryptowhite) how awesome Western Mass is! So I'll probably upload these Little Italy Shops after the weekend, instead of jamming it down your throat now. I won't give an actual timeframe at the moment. So I'll see y'all later. I added the flashing on the cornices, matching the colors up to that on Bing Maps. I also darkened the textures to compensate for the BAT lighting. How'd I do? I also made some graffiti.... in the program... so far this weekend I haven't broken any laws... I don't think... Anywho, I didn't know CG Textures did graffiti. I was using Google Images up until now, but CG Textures is several times better. I think I'll be all set for a while, considering they have over 400 images for graffiti. Here's my method to separate the graffiti from the background: Copy and paste the image into Microsoft Word Set contrast to 100% and usually leave brightness alone Copy and paste into MS Paint Clean up any static in and around the image and round off any edges; basically make it look nice Copy and paste into GIMP Use color select tool and bucket fill tool to make any minority colors (often pink or green) white to blend in with the all white background or to create small amounts of static Using the same method, make some of the other colors black to blend in. What should be left is a white background, a black outline or fill of text, and a fill color for most, if not all the letters Using the fuzzy select tool and bucket fill tool, color the graffiti to your liking (optional or necessary) -Copy and paste into MS Paint, and buff out the edges, or add static with the spraybrush tool Sometimes this is the first point I'll save, but usually I'll save throughout the process There you have it. And yes, I know you can do it better and faster with your better method. You don't earn college credits unless you do. Meanwhile I'm still trying to figure out if I should take Honors Algebra when I eventually get into high school. But I think I'm just rambling now because it's getting late... Good night y'all! Postscript: By the way, I got bored around noon, so I started on the geometry for 309 E 10th Street, which is in "Little Germany". To be honest, I didn't even know such a thing existed until I looked up neighborhoods of Manhattan on Wikipedia. The only reason this thread is funny is because there are so many Soviet jokes I can make, and Todd's just too tired to complain. And Todd's just a natural at saying stuff. Including jokes. And I shouldn't use sentence fragments... Really. Alright, you know the drill. I don't know exactly what to do with the cornices. I added flashing on the inner perimeter to the roof, but that's all I could derive of what you wanted. If there's more I need to do, which I'll guess there is, commence explaining. I don't know if Photoshop and GIMP have the same scale, but I upped the brightness 40. So I'm going to quote you on that. As for the hue, I upped the magenta and red hues each 5, which is out of 128 (I think), so it's pretty slight. If I need to be more extreme, just say so. Besides, I don't want it to look green (although I didn't think it looked very green before... maybe Todd had some bad coffee... or maybe I'm just not seeing it). For the graffiti and ad, I desaturated based on color (red and orange were affected the most) and edited the opacity bitmaps so that the white portions are now a bit darker, therefore making the graffiti more opaque. When I go to the city tonight, I'll see if I can find any graffiti and take pictures to use in my models. After all, I support the local arts. Brandon: I can't say much at this point, but it's coming together nicely! At the very least, you seem to have picked a nice building to model (IMO). Good luck with it! Except doesn't NYBT shorten NYC BAT? That's what I thought when I made my avatar at that unmentionable website. Of course, you can use the excuse "there's an exception to every rule!". Though I don't think anyone's really going to care. A good BAT is accepted by the ST community, be it from NYC or Buffalo. Y'all have a good day. And Todd, congrats on posting before midnight! try making them 25-50% smallerquote> You know the only reason I'm quoting you is because I was told not to. And if it makes any difference, I made it 22.875% smaller. I hope I don't get the flamey eyes smiley for not falling within the range... Anywho, I'm tired, it's Friday, let's get this post done. Ohh... the picture looks really clear! (Yes, Todd, I know it looks better. I used Print Screen, formatted it in Paint which I refuse to give up on, Ctrl+V into GIMP and saved there to surpass the anti-aliasing automatically used on JPEGs in Paint. Not that you would care... chances are you already have a method.) So it turns out that I was using some brick texture on top of the plaster texture (starting when you told me it was, in fact, white brick and not plaster), but the brick wasn't dark enough to have any real impact at all. I revamped it and it looks a lot better now. The only trade-off is that the brick looks darker, so I did some low-tech lightening to even that out. Nonetheless, it looks better than what was basically plaster. I messed with the brick texture, as I mentioned, and desaturated the bricks a bit. Anyhoo, you can add any fun details to the backquote> And I did! It was also a good excuse to go hiking through the woods to the Cold Spring commercial district to look at dumpsters! And other various items near back walls! Though I might have broken the rule of saturation for that one large ad on the right. Bright orange?!- Todd is not pleased! So I will most likely be fixing that. Tomorrow. I finally got the roof accesses to look right! I eventually figured out that the "roof" of the "tower" should be the same or very similar to the actual roof texture. Though it looks a little funky on a side view, the front view looks good. By the way Todd, I told someone at school about you (and your colorful commie coffee-loving sleep-deprived personality) and I guess you're somewhat fascinating to three or so people. Congrats, you're popular in a place you've never been to! G'night y'all! Have a good weekend! -

Jumpthefence replied to jacques_lem's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Though I don't know of any lists for parks, there's this for Landmarks. There's also a list for Rewards on the Omnibus. Since you're somewhat new, I'm just going to tell you that the Omnibus is like the tutorial center of Simtropolis. If you need information for anything Simcity related, look towards that button on the bar at the top of the site, first.
