Large residential zone using ctrl don't develop...
mayor_brando replied to sillyfreshdj's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Originally posted by: Cougar2004 Perhaps if there was a new "cam-zoning" option (a purple zone) to just place a 10x10 or 12x12 area to selected parts of a city (where we want massive growth), and yet still keep all else normal, I think that would be a good balance. Then I could set my city centers for a few blocks of some cities to CAM-growth.quote> That's actually a pretty good idea. Anyway, I don't have CAM, so I wouldn't know much about it, but if you're looking for buildings with a large footprint, just search the STEX. -
Small queston about getting HSR

You don't need the April one, the newer versions have all of the contents of the earlier versions and more. -
High Wealth Residents Can't Find Work, But No Demand
mayor_brando replied to EmperorNero's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Are you just starting your city? If you are, it's better not to have high-wealth reesidents, because your city isn't ready for them yet. Try raising taxes on the wealthy, and putting in more schools, so that more hgih-wealth jobs will come to your city. -
I heard that zoning alternate medium and high-density zones gives you a much better chance of getting rowhouses. That's what I did here, and I'm getting lots of different rowhouses; Stone, Pastel, 2-Story, 3-Story, and Brownstone. Now I have to wait for the lower wealth to become medium-wealth and they'll build more rowhomes. I like the older styles better for some reason, just looks bettter to me. My favorite would probably be ethier the 3-Story rowhouse or the Brownstone.

Too many of this one type of vehicle
mayor_brando replied to magicicada's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Hmmm... looking at it a little closer, it appears those cars with the headlights are luxury sedans, so the problem cars are not low-wealth. -

Interesting, and i've never seen this ethier. Anyway, if crime's the problem, you might want this mod. -
Britains Last World War 1 survivor Dies
mayor_brando replied to Merlin of Flyote's topic in Current Events
Wow! His life spanned three centuries. That would be interesting to live through all that. I know someone who met a guy who had been in the civil war and had supposedly met Lincoln. Of course, that was back in the '60's, but still, he had seen the Civil War, the Deppression, World War I & II, and the beggining of the technology age. -
Toronto street racing , cars reached 200 km/h

I mean, I like a story that's "off the beaten path" once in a while, but you've posted 7 topics in the last two days, and most of them are local stories. Sorry, but I don't like to hear about everything that happens in Toronto. -
My game usually runs smoothly, but sometimes it gets glitchy. Here are my oddities: This was one of my first cities on SC4. All the buildings dissapeared if I scrolled around for too long. The "Larva Breeding" Hi-tech building is very glitchy. I demolished the building, but for some reason, the props stayed. The dream of underground powerlines is finally coming true... Looks like a very complicated commute..

Try using a combo of alt, shift, and ctrl, or use all three. That sometimes works for me, and it is espeacialy useful when zoning on diagonal streets.

Best way to transport sims between zones
mayor_brando replied to flyatl's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I like to use elevated rail, buses, subways, and GLR (you'll need the NAM for GLR). -
Yeah, if you want trams to go on the GLR, you'll need to download some from the STEX. Otherwise they'll just be the regular elevated train/subway automata going on it.
-
To make it more realistic, you could make it sunken, as many highways in suburbs are sunken (at least where I live). Or, you could put some highway walls or trees bordering it, to make sort of a sound barrier. Also, like io_bg said, make sure to get the NAM. Along with extra stuff for highways, you can make curved roads and diagonal streets, which look good in suburbs.

The Official Global Warming/Climate Change Thread
mayor_brando replied to Micah's topic in Current Events
Originally posted by: gml_josea My opinion on this is that we humans are too insignificant to cause a real disruption at global scale by just burning fuel.quote> Do you know anything about fossil fuels? Emmisions from gas and other fossil fuels have chemicals that absorb the sun's heat and trap it, blanketing the earth in what is called "The Greenhouse Effect". And we are not just burning fuel. We are also spewing dozens of chemicals into the air, not just from fuel, but also from everyday things (e.g. hairspray, household cleaners, pesticides). Add the amount of chemicals we use every day, and muiltiply that by five years. And we've been doing this a lot longer than five years. I can safely say that we've had an impact on the environment. If it isn't bad, it will be. Some people will die if we don't do something. All this Global warming, or climate change whatever you want to call it, is just a very well prepared scheme to get your money. There's a huge load of bull***** going right now in the 'scientific community' with scientists everywhere publishing studies in favor and against.quote> Yeah, they've been publishing studies. That's what they do. What do you think they base their studies on? Hmm... science. Science can be proven; it is real. Anyway, I sugggest you actually read some of these studies. Whether humans contributed or not, none of them deny that there has been a (slight) shift in climate. Just loook at that 'Cap and trade' thing being pushed in the Us right now, what a load of bull*****.quote> You also apparently know nothing about the cap and trade plan. It does put taxes on energy companies, and the benefits won't come immediately. But the plan is that we'll be more energy-independent by the year 2020, and more of our energy will be produced through renewable resources (e.g. wind, solar, hydroelectricity, etc.). I would like to hear why you think the plan is a load of bunk. It will help the environment, and the economy in the long-run, and I think the Obama Administration is doing a pretty good job. If these people really wanted to combat emissions they would be funding construction and development of nuclear technology, while at the same time pushing for the development of electric cars.quote> What do you think scientists are doing right now, just sitting around? It's easier to deal with some radioactive rocks than gas.quote> Actually, there is a problem *gasp* with effectivly disposing of radioactive material. You can't just dump somewhere and expect it to go away. There is also a problem of transporting it to be disposed of. Often times it'll have to be carried by truck or train, sometimes through developed areas. And if there is a contamination of it, it'll be a damn mess. I do like nuclear energy, as it's cleaner than gas or oil, but I don't like it's waste. So, basically, all this boils down to the money. Saving the environment doesn't make you money, but telling people they will die if they don't do something, ohhh, that makes a lot of money.quote> Telling people that there will be consquences is not telling them they will die, and it is not a way to make money. It is, however, a way to get people to be more environmentaly friendly. Really, what do you base your post on? -
You might want to look at this thread: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=106031 While it doesn't go in depth into the benefits, it does explain what it is... GLR - Ground Light Rail - Part of the NAM - Basically El-Rail that lies flat on the ground. Draggable version eliminates much of the NAM piece/TE lot crashing problem - Only dependency is the NAM, of course.quote> GLR=Ground Light Rail. It is a ground-level extension of the default Elevated Light Rail network, and is included in the NAM Core Download. It was originally a puzzle-piece based item, but was converted to a draggable Override Network in the June 2007 NAM by memo.quote> A good benefit is that it sorta combines elevated rail and avenue into one, and is good to use in crowded areas.

They increase demand and desriabilty in the area they're plopped in (especially for commercial). The demand and desirability produced by landmarks is known as the "landmark effect".
-
Are your settings turned down? That might stop cars from showing. Also, I find if i'm on a far zoom level (1, 2) cars don't show up. Also, if you have the game paused for awhile then cars will dissapear.

Make sure your water pumps and treatment plants have power. If they don't, they won't function. -
Help with development
mayor_brando replied to araveugnitsuga's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Mabye it would help if, like a few others suggested, you build a bridge connecting the island and the mainland, as a more direct way for sims to get to and from the island. Ferries are slower and many sims are lazy and like to use cars to get around (unless you have the NAM). -
The size of the zone depends on when your city is ready for bigger buildings. For example, a city of, say, 10,000 would have smaller zone sizes than a city of 100,000. The biggest skyscrapers usually are 4x3 or 4x4. The biggest in terms of ground area are 5x5 or 6x6. I think the only 6x6 building in the game is "Andrew's Fashion Center", but i'd have to check on that. Some BATs are bigger, though, such as Library Tower, which is 6x7.

The Official Global Warming/Climate Change Thread

Originally posted by: Ntq$310 This is where I think the environmental movement has lost it, instead of showing every benefit of going green, clean air, natural wonder, saving thousands of animals, effiency, economic benefit, energy benefit, consumption reduction, etc. Instead, all I really here is about global warming and how it's our fault. Now yes, the temperature is on the rise, and who knows, we may be having a small effect on it, but most of it is natural, and a cascade effect.quote> Going green, clean air, energy benefit, effeciency, consumption reduction. Hmm... most if not all of those things you say the environmental movement doesn't focus on anymore have to do with the man-made effects on global warming. And global warming is our fault- to a certain degree. After all, we're the ones spewing tons of chemicals into the air, which only isn't warming the earth, it's also weakening the ozone layer. Your post is the type of post that really angers me. Since really, your just playing the fear card, your threatening that if we don't take massive action, that we will be living underwater, or there will be more massive super disasters. quote> Well... we do have to take massive action, and that's changing our ways to be more environmentally friendly. And, if we don't, the sea level will rise, and disasters will be more catastrophic. Although the effects of global warming will happen slowly, they will happen, and to deny that they won't, to me, doesn't make any sense.
