  1. Guess That City- European Version

    That's Belgrade, my hometown =D
  2. What makes a 'City' a city..?

"City" designations can be screwed up in some cases. As is the case of the two "things" bordering Toronto to the north. For example, the "City" of Vaughan - pop. 238,866 And the "Town" of Markham - pop. 261,573 ON a side note, Markham is a much more urban city, while Vaughan is a few old towns surrounded by kilometers upon kilometers of sprawl. I find New York's designation very interesting, with several counties making a gigantic city. Back on topic, a city must have: -A public library -Most people work within city limits -Buildings taller than 10 stories, yes -In the downtown, the streets are on a grid making it easier to walk anywhere -Some public transit -High-ish density -NO big box stores -NOT master planned -Must have some small shops and local bars -Wide sidewalks

  4. Canadian Government Crisis

I find it very frustrating how the Prime Minister took a 6-vehicle convoy LITERALLY accross the street to the governor-General's house. He did this to dissolve Parliament too. I know its a little detail, but it represents his disregard. Can someone tell me if this is regular practice, I mean Paul Martin simply walked?
  5. Canadian Government Crisis

If Harper wanted to save his government, he definitely should have tried to reach across to the Liberal MP's who were in doubt. He didn't do this, all he did was repeat how it was undemocratic and will threaten national unity. Also, all his "separatists" comments will hurt the conservatives in the next election (whenever that may be). Then again, Dion couldn't even get his tape delivered, which doesn't sound good for the guy who's supposed to become the Prime Minister. They probably should have let Jack Layton address the nation on behalf of the coalition, as he is much more charismatic and liked.
  6. Canadian Federal Election

First, shouldn't the thread subheading read "Conservative government? COALITION government?" It was spelled wrong. Back to the discussion, the only reason the Conservatives get the most donations is because their supporters are mostly rich or owners of companies. Since corporate donations to parties were outlawed, a company can channel their money through an individual. Frankly, the subsidies mean that my vote counts because I voted for the Green Party, and there was no way they would win in my riding, but at least they get financial help with increased support. The CPC promised during the campaign it would work with the other parties, but instead slapped them in the face. Harper expected for this to pass because the liberals honestly had no backbone to stand up for themselves. And also, this talk of the Bloc destroying Canada, the Bloc's not in the coalition. All the Bloc promised was to keep the coalition in power, meaning vote with them. The Bloc gets no cabinet ministers, and the only reason they're cooperating is because the Conservatives ARE bad for Quebec, and he's fighting for what's best for Quebec, which is definitely not secession because Quebec gets 7 billion dollars in equalization payments. Lastly, the stock market plunge was all over the world and it was majorly due to bad news from the US, not necessarily the situation in Ottawa. Oh, and one more thing, Harper was ready to "get in bed" with the "socialists" and the "separatists" in 2004, and is now calling this undemocratic. More Canadians actually voted against him than for him, and the majority will be in power now. ( ) The Fascist Neo-Conservative Reform Party of Canada (X) The Liberal Democratic Coalition for Canada
  7. Gunmen kill at least 78 in attacks on Mumbai

I think the name of the thread should be changed to "kill at least 170 people", because those are the latest numbers. Very scary though. They were actually targeting Westerners, and they found them through passports (you have to give them your passport upon check-in).
  8. What can eat the thing above?

    a snow storm
  9. Why should the person above you be banned?

For getting the Blue Screen of Death: run AWAYYYYY!!!!
  10. Is it possible to have multiple downtowns?

In, Toronto, you have really dense downtown, but North York and Scarborough pretty mush have their own little dense skylines. Mississauga as well, but it's not within Toronto proper, but yeah. This is common in Europe as the original downtowns contain historic buildings that people don't want to see destroyed: La defence, Cnary Wharf, etc
  11. What can eat the thing above?

The decapitated head of the statue of liberty
  12. So, how do you feel about Toronto?

From the Globe and Mail personally i doubt this will happen, and i think that Winnipeg should get a team, and tha Nordiques really need to come back to Quebec City. I also suppose a Hamilton team would make sense too. Hyperlink's not working, copy-paste http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081020.shoalts21/BNStory/National/home

  17. New Official BAT Request Thread

I would really like to see some of the iconic buildings from my city, Toronto. Firstly, the Toronto City hall, which I was very surprised that i wasn't on STEX because its like a very recognizable building also the skydome, i believe the first stadium with a retractable roof And then there's some of the newer projects, most of which are under construction still Shangri-La the Ritz-Carlton the Telus tower Some of the Condo Projects: 1 Bloor East, will be the tallest condo in Canada and the very interesting string cheese condo: Emerald Park Thanks!!
  18. So, how do you feel about Toronto?

Greekman, NO ONE, like i mean NO ONE in Toronto even likes the leafs anymore after they have made the city the laughing stock of the entire Continent. They were actually thinking of bringing another team to TO, and i totally support that, maybe they'll play better LMFAO

  20. So, how do you feel about Toronto?

Originally posted by: combot I went to Toronto about 2 years ago and in my opinion Montreal and Vancouver are FAR more beautiful cities than Toronto. Toronto is a very clean city and sure you get a beautiful view from atop the CN tower, but that is really only on a clear day. In the winter all you see is dull shades of gray and white blanketing the entire city. I don't know exactly how many people here are from Western Canada, but out here it feels like we are just force fed so much **** from Toronto that it starts getting over-whelming. I for one am sick and tired of having to put up with the Leafs, Bob Cole and Harry Neale EVERY Saturday on HNIC, what is wrong with showing Habs or Sens games to the rest of Canada. People in Toronto are all very nice, but, to me, Ive always felt that Toronto, as a city, comes off as quite arrogant and smug, almost as if they are the center of the universe. Ive never quite gotten why people always find it necessary to compare Toronto to LA, NY, Tokyo, Paris, Rome, etc. because Toronto is in no way a city of that caliber.quote> Ok, first of all, why does the entire country of Canada HATE Toronto. I'm not even joking. All the western Canadians think we're hoarding all the money or something. In case you don't know, Toronto is in huge debt. The infrastructure is crumbling, and Steeles Avnue has been Voted the Worst Road in Ontario for the 3 rd time (by CAA). And Toronto isn't smug, or full of itself. I agree, some people are, like EXTREMELY, but youi can't possibly judge everyone by that. On a side note, toronto i quite beutiful during the winter, of course BEFORE all the snow on the side of the road turns black =P
  21. The California High Speed Rail thread

Good going Califonia!! I'm glad this passed. I Think this will definetly pave the way for other areas of North America to receive HSR, and hopefully improve the Acela LOL. This also helps create lots of jobs, and i think infrastructure projects will just skyrocket during this recession/slowdown/whatever, and give jobs to many people. Congratulations, I finally don't have to go to France to go 200mph, which I've always wanted to. Oh, and their official video was amazing, i like how they show the tunnels. Enjoy:
  22. AIR CANADA 767200ER

    um, simcity.ez.ro deosn't work
  23. Georgia and Russia basically at war

right, so the US is OK to recognize Kosovo, which ILLEGALY declared independence, but when russia does the same thing for ossetia and abkhazia, its an invasion Booo hoo hoo. After all the US had no citizens in Kosovo, and Russia does. And while on the subject of Kosovo, your HOLY CNN and FOX network obviously told you about Serbian soldiers ethinic cleansing of albanians. Riight, but nobody ever mentions the GENOCIDES against Serbian people in all periods of history. And what about all the mass graves in croatia which all turned out to have serbian people inside. And ever heard of hundreds of thousand of bosnian CITIZENS deported or killed because they had Serbian background. And all the houses and serbians towns that the albanians scorched, and all the people they killed of serbian origin, and then thayre rewarded with a country. Yeah sooooo fair. Why do you think that kosovo was a part of serbia in the FIRST PLACE??? SERBIANS LIVED THERE!!!!!!! And why is there now only Albanians??? Because serbian people MAGICALLY disapeared??? I dont think soo!!! I realizze this is WAAY of topic, but it really makes me mad when people start *****ing about russia doing illegal things, when the US is WAAAYYYY worse!!! You`re probably thinking this guy doesnt know anything, he needs to watch more CNN!! I was born in serbia and lived there until i was ten, and when NATO bombed Belgrade, my cousins lost their home!! and all this WHY??? So that Freaking albanians can expand their territory. Macedonia is already screwed by recognizing Kosovo. Albanians have a province there too, and id say macedonia is next when it comes to Albanian seperatism. Then Montenegro, and then Greece would be next!! And voila: Greater Albania. And why do you know none of this, because you americans blindly believe all you TV networks
  24. So, how do you feel about Toronto?

OMG, this made me laugh SOOO hard!!!!
  25. So, how do you feel about Toronto?

OK, I live in toronto, and i think its nice. I also agree with a lot of people in Mississauga, it has some very nice buildings (not counting of course, the HIDEOUS Mississauga City hall). I'm sorry, but smog is not at all a problem, and all those ppl mentioning Montreal. I really like Montreal, but the air quality there is way worse. And the french drive like crazy, there's many roads where the lanes arent even marked. Also when coming back from Quebec City, I got stuck in traffic in Vieux-Port at MIDNIGHT. PLUS it was a saturday. It took us 3 hours to finally get onto the HYW 720, and get out. I went a little off topic here. I would say toronto's probplem is the fact that the TTC is SEVERLY underfunded (we NEED more subways NOW!!!), and that the Waterfront is a wasteland of abandoned industry (BUT THATS ABOUT TO CHANGE) Also, i relly dont see why Toronto keeps competing with NYC, i mean do we really want to be like NYC (no offence i like NYC too, but its just to crowded, AND the subway is disguisting). Aother than that i love living in Toronto, and i hope the future brings more improvements! BTW the photo here VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV is from MTL
