Mass transit developments
edmonton_stinks replied to hamsterTK's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
The C-Train is great (only stops at stations cause it doesn't go on streets, it runs beside them) for those who can ride it. Problem is, huge chunks of the city can't use it. It should be great, eventually. -
Hi pats! Thanks for the help. If I can ever get the house set off the ground it should have about 20 R$$ lots.

Mass transit developments
edmonton_stinks replied to hamsterTK's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Calgary has a small light rail system (3 lines) and desperately needs expansion but the West LRT isn't planned until 2014, the Southeast LRT until 2023, and the North LRT until after that. Efficient, isn't it? -
-
That's one big urban area.

Hope tourism picks up! It would be a shame not to have more people visiting such beautiful islands...if they were real, I would go. I love the photoshopping. You've managed to make the tenement buildings look like great places to live.

This is amazing. Although I feel silly for only picking up here, I love this CJ. It'll be great to eventually see the metropolis.

Greenville, SC - Sprawl at its Worst
edmonton_stinks replied to Frankie_Grove's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Originally posted by: ExiL3 What I like about living here in Europe is that Cities (mostly bigger ones) are mostly a whole bunch of towns grown together towards a city centre... This gives people many possibilities to where they want to shop, which park they want to visit, and more, also creating less traffic because people can walk or take the bus if they want to shop. In the US, in large, the people have to get out of their Sub-urban neighborhood, get to a main road and drive to the closest shopping area... often consisting of rows of malls all located in one area. Studies show that the more compact lifestyle we have here in Europe is actually better for us, and the environment. take care, quote> I would agree with this. When I was in London, I could walk or take the underground anywhere I wanted to go. World class subway and the city isn't as big as you would think (coming from Canada) a city with that much people would be. When I was in Dublin, I walked everywhere. So, it's better for you because you walk more, and better for the environment because of less car pollution. I think we could stand to learn a lesson here. Lousy oil boomtowns...so much sprawling. -
Greenville, SC - Sprawl at its Worst
edmonton_stinks replied to Frankie_Grove's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
You can't tell from any lists but Calgary's sprawl is horrendous. The problem is basically that there are no geographical borders (except the Tsuu Tina reserve) because we're completely landlocked. You can't find any problems from lists but Calgary's suburbs are all included into the city proper, or at least most are. The urban footprint is only slightly smaller than NY city proper with 1/8 the population. Scary. -
Like I said, maybe they'll have a British version and an American version. I don't know if CU will incorporate any Simcity staples, but SCS has already said that they are removing most of the old Simcity things and seem to be making a game for 10 year olds. At least CU is going for realism in transportation. Even if everything needs to be plopped, it's something.

arrgh! i was about to do a snappy retort about how that was the london eye and not a ferris wheel. this looks fantastic, especially compared to SCS. In terms of 3D simulation, it's quite realistic, and much less cartoony. Doesn't look like there are any alien cities or gingerbread houses, and it also looks like there is more than one type of road. only con: a little too british. supposedly city life has a british version and an american version (which is perfect for us canadians), maybe this will have a similar thing going on. i'd really like to see how this develops.

Very interesting. The pictures are done very well. The terraforming is great too.

Lousy Siberian garbage. Will the Sakhaliyan camera give us better quality pictures, Commissar? Sersiously, like the start so far. Hoping to see the cities at some point.

Your vision of what Simtropolis 1000 could look like
edmonton_stinks replied to joerg's topic in City-Building Games
Virtual Philadelphia is great. If Simtropolis 1000 could look like that, I'd buy it. Even if it was exactly the same as SC4 otherwise, I'd still buy it. Of course, there will be a lot more new goodies with ST1000. That just sweetens the deal! -
Something I think is very necessary is to think ahead. I expect that after this is released, a patch would come out two or three times a year that would add some features, and tweak some more. A few years after being released, the game might change a lot. There might not even be much of a reason to make a new game after this one, just modd new features and remove unpopular ones for a long time.quote> Now this idea I like. Release a vanilla version of the game, then tweak it. Add the "nice" things progressively, and make each individual addon optional, kind of like how you can check or uncheck things on the NAM. That way, you only get the game YOU want. By the time this is done, everyone might have a completely different version. Also, I notice that this has reached 12 pages of discussion in less than 2 days. That's incredible.

Yes, I am from Calgary. This idea is great. Getting a lot of traffic here. One thing though: we might not want to include too much in the game itself. Not saying we go down to the level of SCS, but perhaps we could have more of a SC4 sort of setup. Have a basic, vanilla version of the game, then some of the additional stuff (like my idea for transit routes) could be downloadable extras. We don't want the basic version of the game to crash somebody's computer.
-
I know eyesore tenements are realistic, but they should be across from other eyesore tenements. The neighbourhood idea is great, as well as designating schools by roads/neighbourhoods and such. You could name your neighbourhoods and say that each school covers certain neighbourhoods. As for the retail/office/hotel thing, I say we can keep the RCI zoning, but retail, office and hotel can just be different types of commercial zones.
-
The "zone by wealth" idea is great. It's annoying having eyesore tenements across the street from huge mansions.
-
I love this idea. If I had anything to contribute, I would. However, I'm pretty pathetic at modding. Suggestion (this is only if you guys really want complexity and to build on SC4): Change the transit system a little so you'd have "routes," rather than just placing stops and stations and having all the buses and trains go everywhere at once. This is some great stuff so far.
-
Idea: Make an expansion pack for SCS that makes it like SC4 but with EVEN MORE added realism and better graphics than SC4. However, if this is the only new version of Simcity that is released, I hope TM goes out of business for this. This new game appears to be for 7 year olds. Well basically, we took Simcity, except got rid of all the realism, and got rid of zoning. This new thing is exactly like The Sims. We don't want another Sims game! WE WANT SIMCITY.

Misnomer -- could it be we are mistaken?
edmonton_stinks replied to schm0's topic in City-Building Games
I hope that EA comes out with two games (SC5 wouldn't be released at exactly the same time as SCS, probably). One: Societies-What they say it will be. Not an urban simulation at all. Two: SC5-The REAL Simcity sequel. It'll build off SC4 and add even more realism and better graphics. Keep the zoning! -
Has anyone seen the screenshots? The buildings aren't even realistic! And why is the traffic light floating?? They've eliminated the zoning, and it looks like they don't even have roads, streets, highways, or anything other than avenues for that matter. I'll have to see if they tweak this or where it goes but so far, I really don't like it.
-
Hate to double-post, but where did you get those small town style downtown commercial buildings? Note: I mean where on the STEX. If someone posts and says "on the STEX" that is not helpful.

This region is gorgeous. Reminds me a bit of that part of Southern Ontario between Toronto and Ottawa that I like to call cottage country. Lots of nice, quaint little towns around there. Can't wait to see more villages!

It says that I need to download gmax from discreet.com/products/gmax before I can use the BAT. However, when I go to the site, it takes me to something else that says they no longer offer gmax by itself. Now, to get gmax I'd have to buy something that costs around $3500. What should I do?
