  1. Recreation: San Diego County

Wow i have not been on ST for a long long time, so i decided to check up on the community and when i saw you were recreating the best most amazing city in the world i obviously had to comment. Holy crap dude this is soo awesome! Cornado is super acurate, i look forward to your recreation of OB and PB and of course the completion of downtown. Sorry i havnt been around for a while and while i dont think i will be returning to sc4 i will definatly keep up with this journal. Awsome work man. -Hawkeye
  2. Hawkeye's Sandbox

Hello all and welcome to my new city Journal! Recently I have gotten much influence from many diffrent areas which I would like to apply to sc4. The problem is I cant create these areas in a single region as they vary widely in styles and would not seamlessly fit into a single city. So in this journal I will not be focusing on one region or a particular town; Instead each update will focus on the development of one city tile. The city tiles have no relation to one another, for example one tile could be a tropical paridise while the neighboring tile is a snowy wonderland. Basically whatever i feel like creating I will pull up a new tile and create it; I will also be asking for ideas of areas to create from you. I am hopng that this way of presenting and creating the region will help keep the sc4 building fresh and new as i will have to create many diffrent styles and capture diffrent feels from tile to tile. Lastly I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for viewing this CJ and hope you enjoy it!!! So here we go: Todays update I will take you step by step through the development of an industrial area. My goal is to fill enough of the screen to take a highly detailed and realistic snapshot with little to no blank space showing. This is also the first industrial area I have made in a long time so I am excited to get started!!! Pic 0.1- Ah the beggining of a new area! A blank canvas for any Sc4 player! The possiblities are endless... Pic 0.2- Lets start by creating a lowered section of land using the handy hole digging lots! Pic 0.3- Ok cool! So now lets fill in the newly dug section with concrete and place retaining walls! Im sure your wondering "What the heck is he creating?!" Scroll down and you'll see!!! Pic 0.4- Voila!!! By using ploppable water and adding a little flora we now have a canal for all the storm water to run through. Pic 0.5- Ok so now lets start working on the main area itself! Lets laydown roads, place powerlines and create buildings!!! Pic 0.6- An addition of the RHW and the niftly little El-Rail trick to create seamless transition from the streets to the filler lots. Pic 0.7- Lets begin construction on the other side of the canal! We'll lay down a freight line and station aswell! Pic 0.8- Once again lets continue adding buildings to the area! Pic 0.9- I experimented with some flora in the median of the highway. I think it turned out alright! Pic 0.10- Lets add a highway sign and create a barrier between the highway and builidngs! Pic 0.11- Wooh were done!!! yep thats all the development I need for a picture, like I said im not creating cities just recreating areas that have influenced me. Heres an overview!!! Pic 0.12- And heres the final product!!! So that concludes the first update of Hawkeye's Sandbox!!! As for the next update who knows what it will be on? Tropical getaway? Bustling Downtown? Rural Valley? Stay tuned and find out!!! Oh and Please Comment!!! -Hawkeye

  8. Hawkeye's Sandbox

Hello all and welcome to my update special! Before we get into things i would first like to give a huge thanks to ironicepitome, TmiguelT, ComputerGuy890100, buildsolid, Evillions, dfnva, chrissc94, Schulmanator, Raysfan16, N106, Muck308 and ecoba for their awsome comments!!! They are very much appriciated and I hope to see all of you back here!!! So today's update is going to be a little diffrent from the others. I was looking through some of my older pictures from when i first started the game and figured i would show my progression through sim city 4. I will start in the beggining and work my way to where i am right now. So here we go: Part 1- Before Simtropolis... We all remember our first attempts at SC4... The endless grid layouts, redundant buildings, U-Drive it missions and the annoying as hell "No job" symbols that would wipeout half the city. This is where we played the game as maxis intended, growing the city from the ground up. I used to play for hours just trying and get a skyscrapper... and would get so excited when one of those three story maxis condos grew. It was a fun game but i didnt even realize how much better it was going to get... Pure maxis as far as the eye can see... I think this was actually one of my better attempts too. The realism is just amazing isn't it? One of my more ambitious attempts... Part 2- So Many Addons!!! Obviously every one of us has stumbled upon simtropolis one way or another. When i first started hanging around here i had no clue what i was doing. I remember asking rediculous questions and double posting like crazy. Luckily i learned quickly and wasn't too much of a pest to others (at least i hope i wasn't). And then the discover of the stex... the fix to everything maxis got wrong plus much much much much more! For a while i spent more time downloading files then i actually spent playing the game! As well as the stex i was also amazed and in awe of the city journals on the site. I couldn't even imagine being able to create anything close to what was being displayed. I used to read journal after journal and every time left wondering how they could be so detailed and realistic. It was something i strived to one day be able to create... Part 3- The CJ's The city journal section has got to be one of my favorite sections of ST. As i mentioned above the CJ's were a great source of inspiration for me and have influenced how i play SC4 immensly. After about a year here at simtropolis i finally decided to try my luck at creating a CJ for myself. Since then i have created 3 others. Here is a small presentation on each of them: My very first CJ! Some of you may even remember it... I started this about 3 years ago and really had no clue what i was doing. I remember reading the city journal guide in the omnibus over and over before creating it. It was definatly a learning experince and i gained alot of knowledge on how a CJ should be run. All and all it was a decent start to my City Journaling carrer... Some early suburbs... The Coral Bay beach! And of course the concrete joungle downtown area... After Coral Bay i took about a year break from SC4. When i came back i jumped into a brand new CJ called Ampton County. Im pretty sure this was my longest CJ with about 7 pages worth of updates. In this CJ i started to lean more towards realism rather than creating a gigantic mass of towering buildings which had dominated my playing style prior to this journal. Overall i think this was a vast improvment over Coral Bay! Nothing much to say... Enjoy the following pictures! Haven Cove is my most recent CJ other than the Sandbox. I started it about half a year ago and while it is only about two or three pages long it definatly displays what i believe is some of my best work. When i compare Coral Bay to this i am blown away by the amount i have improved. In my eyes i had finally reached the level of detail and realism i had been in awe of when i first arrived at Simtropolis. Once again not much to say... Enjoy the pictures! The CJ your viewing right now ... I hope to be able to continue this CJ for a while!!! I thank you all for viewing this CJ and all my CJ's in the past. I have truly enjoyed my time with Sim city 4 as well as the time spent on this site and would like to thank all of you in the community for making it so much fun!!! I hope to be here for a while longer and to hopefully inspire newcomers to embark on the same sim city 4 journey i once traveled. Thanks for viewing... -Hawkeye

  24. Hawkeye's Sandbox

Wow... so its been a while since i last updated this journal hasn't it? haha well... I actually havnt been around ST at all lately, RL have been getting really busy for me and i have had really no time for SC4. So anyway, this morning i decided to check in on ST and I read through all the awsome comments in this journal and decided: What the hell, i'll throw up another update and see what happens. So thank you very much to all the commenters, while i am not going to be doing individual replies this time i would just really like to make sure you know that every single comment is greatly appreciated!!! On to today's update: Before i took my long break from the game i began a small oceanside settlement. I based the area off of settlements found in the south pacific and central america. Today i will take you step by step through the creation of the area. So here we go: Pic 2.1- So as with all my creations i like to start from scratch... a blank canvas to any sim city 4 player. Pic 2.2- Ok, so one of the best ways to start is to create a "rough draft" of the landscape to help you get a better visual of how you will translate your idea into sc4. Pic 2.3- I'am aiming for a tropical feel, so lets add a mix of palm trees (duh), vibrant flowers and standard green trees to tie it all together. Pic 2.4- Lets add some boulders to add realism to the shoreline as well as continue growing our little tropical forest. Pic 2.5- Ok so lets begin the town itself! Pic 2.6- Lets add some plopable paths for the base of the village and create a little farm. Pic 2.7- Ok so now lets continue growing the area by adding buildings and details such as rocks and palms. Pic 2.8- Another farm and some more flora. Pic 2.9- I have found a great way to add realism to farms is to surround them with trees. Pic 2.10- Cows anyone? Pic 2.11- With a little more flora we now have a completed village! Pic 2.12- A path that leads up the hill (adding all this flora took forever...) Pic 2.13- Here's a overview of the area! Pic 2.14- and of course... The final product!!!!! Thanks for viewing and I hoped you enjoyed this update!!! I will hopefully have another update up soon, but the way things have been going i can't say for sure when. Anyway thanks again and please comment!!! -Hawkeye
