"Banished" a new city-building strategy game released today

Banished, a city-building strategy game by Shining Rock Software is released today.

    What is Banished?

Welcome to the world of Banished! In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.

The objective of the game is to keep the population alive and grow it into a successful culture. Options for feeding the people include hunting and gathering, agriculture, trade, and fishing. However, sustainable practices must be considered to survive in the long term.

    Gameplay

The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough—there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.

Banished has no skill trees. Any structure can be built at any time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money. Instead, your hard-earned resources can be bartered away with the arrival of trade vessels. These merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet; however, their lengthy trade route comes with the risk of bringing illnesses from abroad.

There are twenty different occupations that the people in the city can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to mining, teaching, and healing. No single strategy will succeed for every town. Some resources may be more scarce from one map to the next. The player can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry for rock, but all these choices require setting aside space into which you cannot expand.

The success or failure of a town depends on the appropriate management of risks and resources.

    Survival

Surviving the winters will be among your greatest challenges. Your tailors can make clothing, your people can build houses and burn firewood. But necessities have a price—Cutting down forests reduces the deer population you can hunt. Although your foresters can plant new trees, the cures for many diseases can only be found in forests that have existed for decades.

Farming for many seasons in one place will ruin the soil. Taking fish and game faster than they reproduce will lead to extinction, and your starvation.

Wandering nomads can join your town to grow the population quickly, but allowing them in increases the chance of illnesses from far off lands!

Curious if there will be a mod section on Simtropolis once modding is released?  Anybody know?

I think that if this game really takes off, we should add it as a full section.

I am not able to run the game yet, but it looks intriguing.  As for modding, I wonder if it has that kind of open-endedness.  I am going to investigate getting either a new graphics set up or a new machine.  Something has really gone down the drain with the X-org default graphics driver.

Based on the few tweets and blogs I've seen the developer (the one dude) said it will be fully moddable and eluded to the fact of new buildings and simulation modding.

Thanks.  The link to the Banished forum was useful, the other was not.  I am running Ubuntu 13.10 with wine 1.7.13 (very latest) and haven't worked out all the wrinkles yet.

I really think we need a full forum topic for Banished.  It certainly has more going for it than some others that have forum sections.

    Later:  Did the following tests.

    1. Created a new clean wine prefix with no adds of any libraries and set it to Windows 7

    2. Tried running from the short cut created by the game installer.  No soap, same result.

    3.  Tried running with the nice command.  Increased the priority.  Same result.

    4.  Moved down my hierarchy and tried running directly without the shortcut.  Slightly better response but still too slow to be useful.  The shortcut created by the installer is BS and unnessary.

    5.  Tried running in no graphics mode to cut out my chip.  Game refused to start without a graphics chip/card.

    6.  Since it will simply start from the *.exe, I now have a script (command) and shortcut that starts the game without the generated nonsense.  It will also close from the menu, but it is still impossibly slow.

    7.  Reverting to my previous prefix.  I've booted my machine too damned many times today.

Been playing for a week now and it definitely is one to be recommended.

The foundations fo the game are really solid and it provides for a challenging and satisfactory experience.

On the longer run I'd like to see the functionality expanded or even new functionalities implemented. For instance: more industry types and longer scope of the existing ones, a police/criminal system and more public services, among other things.

Fortunately, Luke - the one-man-army who's created this jewel - is currently developing a modding kit. So folks, we might have game for a long time to come.
