I can tell you already that multiple character story lines are fun.

As for a war, I'm not sure what you mean.  A war that causes the outbreak (or doesn't help the situation any) or a war that happens during the outbreak.  Those have several different tropes that can make a really great story.

As for your last question, yes, some plugins would make a visually appealing story.  Please use some.
