The Everglades, Florida
The Everglades is a natural region of tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Florida, comprising the southern half of a large drainage basin within the Neotropical realm. The ecosystem it forms is not presently found anywhere else on earth - and many of it's most incredible wonders can be found in Everglades National Park, a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the extreme southern tip of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' abundant wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther, West Indian manatee, and various species of crocodiles and alligators. It's truly one of the world's most amazing wetland ecosystems - let's take a look at some of what this amazing region has to offer.
Our trip to The Everglades sets off from Orlando - a city that's well known for it's iconic theme parks, attractions, and entertainment scene.
After a few hours aboard our flight, we get our first sight of The Everglades as small tributaries and streams start to pop up in the surrounding landscapes, surrounded by thick vegetation and scrubland. We're lucky enough today to also spot a small flock of flamingoes along the way - a rarity in the region.
We'll be making a stop in nearby Miami along our journey for supplies and to explore the city - it's one of the world's most popular vacation spots, with trendy nightlife, beaches, art galleries and world-class hotels.
Once we land on a small airstrip on the edge of the wetlands, we hop aboard an airboat for our first real taste of these wetlands. With top speeds reaching close to 60 mph, these boats zip across the rivers of grass and swampland, giving some up close and personal view of these unforgettable landscapes.
The Everglades are home to some of the southern United States' (and the world's) most diverse and unique wildlife species - and it's the only place in the world that you'll find both alligators and crocodiles living together. Along our airboat ride, we're lucky enough to spot the mighty American crocodile - and making sure to keep a safe distance as well!
We'll conclude with a few views over the heart of The Everglades from above - this massive, swampy maze of rivers and lakes is truly a one of a kind natural wonder you won't find anywhere else on earth.
