Plotting Brisbane's railways
Public transport advocates have in recent months sought to give riders of Brisbane's extensive rail networks a clearer idea of how everything fits together. Until recently, both the metro U-Train, high speed R-Train and commuter C-Train networks had been mapped separately, meaning commuters would be seemingly unaware of the vast number of interchanges across the integrated network.
Well, no more!
The Transport Department has unveiled a sneak peek at the yet-unfinished project to put all three networks on the map.
In order to convey how customers can best take advantage of the complicated and often messy system, the project team has introduced a number of key features to to system map, including
1. Line dots at each terminus to indicate the end points of lines
2. Clear hierarchy of station importance. Major interchanges are denoted by capital letters, intermediate stations by a standard font size and minor stops by smaller sized words.
3. Important interchanges list the services stopping at the station within the connector blobs, meaning customers can clearly follow routes.
4. Various line widths and colour combinations are used to denote mode. For example, U-Train lines are thinner and use various shades of green to stand out, while R-Train services are displayed using different shades of red, and stand out by using separate station circles next to major interchanges. The C-Train network retains its multi-coloured lines.
5. Special services and additions to the transport network are denoted.
