Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a beautiful rugged, rainforested Central American country with pristine beaches, steep volcanoes, and great biodiversity. Roughly a quarter of its area is made up of dense protected jungle, teeming with spider monkeys and quetzal birds. In recent years, Costa Rica has become a tourism hotspot as well, with the bustling and lively capital city of San José serving a hub to the rest of the country. Let's explore this Central American gem and it's many amazing wonders in today's update.
We'll begin our tour with a quick stop in in the capital of San José - which is also Costa Rica's largest city. Located on an extensive plain in the heart of the country, San José is guarded by majestic volcanoes and green hills, honoring the natural richness that exists throughout the national territory. Founded in the first half of the eighteenth century, San José is nowadays a city where visitors of the entire world converge; it is a metropolis full of interesting places, faces, and colors reflecting the history of a population. Known for its world-class museums, parks, hotels, theaters, and historic buildings - there's plenty here that you'll want to check out.
After a stop in the capital city, we embark for the coastline - and Costa Rica is well known for its stunning beaches. The ones at Manuel Antonio National Park are among Central America's best - featuring pristine white sand beaches and shimmering turquoise waters amongst a rainforest backdrop, it's not hard to see why this gem has gotten more and more popular with tourists and locals over the years.
In addition to its beaches and bustling cities - Costa Rica also offers plenty for the adventurous tourist. White water river rapids, like the ones on the Rio Pacuare, make for a truly exhilarating experience.
We head inland to explore a little more of Costa Rica's mountainous interior - starting with the iconic Arenal Volcano. Standing 5,437 feet tall, it looms large and ominous over the pastured green hillsides that surround its base. Although it's been dormant for over a decade, from 1968 to 2010 the volcano was extremely active, constantly spewing ash and smoke - making it the 10th longest volcanic eruption on Earth since 1750.
Our tour concludes with a look over another one of Costa Rica's most impressive volcanoes - the Irazu Volcano. This active volcano is situated in the Cordillera Central range close to the city of Cartago, and is also another one of Central America's most iconic mountains. The name "Irazu" comes from the combination of "ara" and "tzu" or a corruption of Iztarú, which was the name of an indigenous village on the flanks of the volcano - and today, the entire volcano is surrounded by lush farmland and small villages on its hilly slopes, making for a majestic sight from above.
