South Africa
Our look at some of Africa's most remarkable countries continues today with South Africa. This country of 58 million on the southernmost tip of the African continent is filled with wonders to keep you in awe - in the inland, majestic mountain ranges, rock formations, waterfalls, and destinations like the big game populated Kruger National Park all make for excellent tourist destinations. The Western Cape offers beaches, lush vineyards around Stellenbosch and Paarl, craggy cliffs at the Cape of Good Hope, lagoons along the Garden Route, and the city of Cape Town, beneath flat-topped Table Mountain. South Africa is renowned for its varied topography, great natural beauty, and cultural diversity, all of which have made the country a favored destination for travelers. Let's take a visit to this beautiful country in today's update and see a few of South Africa's most amazing sights.
South Africa is home to all sorts of incredible natural wonders - and we'll begin our trip to one of the country's most iconic sights, the Blyde River Canyon. This lush, mountainous river canyon is particularly incredible from above.
Few places in the world have the sort of flora and fauna that you'll see in Kruger National Park in the northern part of the country. Excursions through the heart of the park are a great way to experience its wonders.
After another week of trekking across the country, we've reached another one of South Africa's most remarkable sights - the Drakensberg Mountain range. Along the edge of these mountains and along South Africa's border with Lesotho is the majestic Ampitheatre, a rock formation unlike anything else on the face of the planet.
Another view of the impressive Ampitheatre from ground level.
We venture deeper into rural South Africa, and along our way we stop by a number of small villages to get a glimpse into the life of the local villagers.
Further south, the country's Indian Ocean shoreline is where you'll find the beautiful waterfront city of Durban. This important port city also is home to one of Africa's best skylines, and has been increasing in popularity with tourists over the years.
We travel further north until we reach another one of South Africa's great cities - Johannesburg. It's home to one of Africa's most impressive modern skylines - and the towering 732 foot tall Carlton Centre opened in 1973 and was formerly Africa's tallest skyscraper.
The city's sprawl is truly incredible from above.
Despite Johannesburg's wealth, especially from its many gold mines, there's still massive wealth inequality in this part of the world. Massive slums can be seen lining the outskirts of many of South Africa's largest cities.
South Africa is unique in the fact that it's actually home to three different capital cities - Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and Pretoria. Pretoria is the country's executive capital and also is home to a sleek, modern skyline. From late September to middle November, the city's center comes to life with purple Jacaranda trees, making for a beautiful sight.
After exploring Pretoria, we head back south for the final leg, and the first thing we'll do is explore even more of the country's world class shoreline. Muizenberg, along the country's Indian Ocean shoreline, is well known for its beautiful beaches and colorful beach houses.
The heart of the country and southern South Africa is a region of Africa that's renown for its vineyards and wineries. Franschhoek's vineyards are especially picturesque and have become one of the region's most top destinations for wine tasting.
South Africa is truly home to all sorts of natural wonders. The barren landscapes of Namaqualand come to life each year with an explosion of color as all sorts of flowers pop up, seemingly out of nowhere. It may be off the beaten track and not as visited as some of South Africa's other wonders - but any trip here is one you'll remember for a long time.
Our trip concludes with a look over South Africa's second largest city and legislative capital - Cape Town. This large port city is home to a modern skyline and is overlooked by one of the world's most impressive rock formations, the majestic Table Mountain. From the sky, it's a scene that will truly take your breath away.
