Developments in Calgary

“The ride back to Calgary was rather long. I had to go out of Demin, through Lockheart’s railyard, and finally across a vast expanse of outer Calgary. As I looked out my Window, I saw many new developments, but most prominently was the new small bulk goods port, and industrial park.”

“However, I didn’t realize that this was only a small taste of everything that has changed in Calgary. Its an entirely new place now, and on its way to becoming a premier city. I sat back in my seat, this region isn’t so bad afterall, I guess maybe I was lucky to stay here. I looked up to a map of all the Stations on this line…and noticed there were two extra ones near Calgary, and since I had some time, I supposed I would get off at the nearest new one…which the train happened to be arriving at!”

“The station was very nice, a sort of Northeast American style. It also looks like they had to make a new siding just for the station, a siding with two lines running down. I made my way into this new development, and everything looked so new!”

“There were brand new shops, and a plethora of brand new middle-class homes, many of which I assumed commuted into the city center. I walked around for about an hour, and then caught another train into the city center.”

(Also in the photo, notice the proliferation of Industry. There has been such high demand for Manufacturing that the city has nearly run out of space, and has allowed indusry to build in some commercial areas, driving businesses out to different areas of Calgary. The council is currently attempting to reverse this, and find a new home for Industries.)
“This time in Calgary, I met the mayor personally. He was a very jolly person, very large, and from asking around I knew he was a very popular mayor. He took me around in his limo, to see the largest new development in Calgary, “The Marina” as most people call it.”

“The Marina was actually an incredibly large waterfront development, complete with a boardwalk, an steamboat, a food court, a commercial area, and dock launching area. And of course, there are quite a few docks for boats, as well as recreational and commercial docks.”

“The mayor told me that there was another part to the project that was as large and expensive as the Marina, but hardly got any praise, and that was the seawall building, right behind the Marina. It stretches around the entire area, and in some areas goes into two or three levels. However, hardly anyone knows of this project. Its sort of the unsung hero.”

“Remember how there were ‘two’ new rail stations? Well, turns out that the other one led into a tunnel and straight into the new development! This new station is a small terminal station, but extremely useful, it’s a very direct way to get to the city center, since instead of going around engineers went through the tunnel.”

“We went around to check out the new Marina, and then the mayor pulled out a photo of what was being debated by the council, and is up for vote."

This is where you can vote! Due to the amazing success of the first Marina, a second proposal has come up before the council, being called "The Marina Phase II" (Very 'creative' name, huh?). Its an extremely expensive proposal, extending the new docks to meet up with Calgary's original docks, near the city center. Due to the scope of this proposal, it will not be implemented for some time, however, some are still looking to see it passed. Many say that this waterfront area does not need to be developed, and the benefits of a new park and boardwalk won't be enough to recoup the money spent. They say that the money could be put towards implementing a better mass transit system, to allow for more development. However, others say that building this will bring massive amounts of wealthy residents to the area, and thus make Calgary a very wealthy city.
“Lastly, before I went to my hotel, I was given an overview photo, very nice, and Calgary has grown very much since I last was here. Maybe Tavlon will be the same.”

“Well, I sort of gave away where I’ll be going next, but, yes, I will be visiting Tavlon, on my way to the Region’s newest development.”
Thats all! On a side note, please feel free to recommend something you want to see in my CJ! An area developed? a new transit system? a new industry? all are welcome suggestions! I'm running out of ideas anyway, haha.
