The day the Colorado River showed his anger
Thursday January 23, 2002. It was a wet day, typical summer day (southern hemisphere). And as is typical of the season, storms from the nearby Southern Ocean, brought an epic precipitation.
On Wednesday night January 22 the storm had reached the city of Ostend. Eight hours, 455 millimeters of rain. Between January and February 370 mm rain.
In the neighboring province of Tambora (Colorado River is right in the limted between Ostend and Tambora) the rain was more powerful, reaching down 521 millimeters in 10 hours.
20 miles north of the city on the river, lies the Dique Rojo dam. The incredible flood upstream soon reach the dam. Almost beyond the wall, creating panic in the area. Without warning to the population, and governmental orders, the floodgates opened at 17.48 local time. A wave of more than 5 meters walked by the river destroying what we all find in their path. In just two minutes, the water reaches the city.
Marisa Galindez, near Rio Colorado, told the newspaper La Voz del Interior, the city of Ostend, what you felt. His home was saved by only 30 meters from being hit by the fury of river.
The flood claimed the lives of 132 residents. In total, 140 people died, but with 132 deaths, was the most affected Colorado River. The 8 remaining victims belong to the Vasco town (the AMO).
