Originally built as a church by missionaries the St.Charles Cathedral was turned into a fort called Fort Charles. The fort was armed with cannons, guns, ammo and a saferoom and its main purpose was to defend the city in case of an attack. Unfortunately the fort was reduced to ruins following an earthquake that hit the area shortly after the fort was attacked by the French. Today it has been declared a historic site and is a popular tourist attraction for those who are willing to make the trek up the winding roads to the top of the mountain.
