iMac G5 problems - crashes & bright red & green boxes

Just wondering if anyone else is having problems like mine. I've tried reinstalling both SC4 and RH multiple times, always removing all files before I reinstall.

Both games worked fine on my iMac G4, but for some reason on my new G5 it crashes after about a minute, and there's bright red and green boxes in place of my commercial buildings.

I installed the patches too and that didn't help. I'm thinking it's a G5 thing? My G4 has the same video card. Any other suggestions?

I've had zero problems since I have installed it on my 1.6 iMac.

I don't know what could be going wrong, but I hope someone can help you out.

And Welcome to Simtropolis.

    Thanks snotfist.

I ran apple's hardware test and it didn't come back with any errors. I forgot to mention that it's only doing this when I install the Rush Hour expansion. In regular SC4 it works fine.

Here's a photo of the building colors I was talking about... It seems to be only the commercial buildings.

The only other thing I can think to do at this point is get more RAM

When I installed RH over SC4, it jumps the colours to 16bits (default is 32bits). Perhaps this is the case on your iMac.

I have not a standard videocard installed.

ive experienced no problems of this sort with sim city4 or rush hour on my dual g5. I wouldnt think that this problem could be caused by the ammount of ram you have.
i would suggest contacting aspyr's tech support at their website.

It definitely seems to me as a RAM problem. Always give an Apple G5 a minimum of 1GB RAM to breathe - so to say... Even such memory intens applications like modern games (which includes SC4) may get problems with insufficiant RAM. Otherwise lower your game setup to the minimum... That may help!

Did you run the RH patch (provided by aspyr.com) aswell? If it only comes up with RH installed maybe the patch will help!

I'm on a PC, so I don't know how much help I'll be, but try updating your graphics card drivers. Or you could try changing the render from Hardware to Software under game options. Also, is your graphics card ATI or nVidia? On the PC version, there seems to be problems with a few driver editions of certain nVidia cards, and I've heard that all ATI cards don't perform as well as comparable nVidia cards.

Thanks Octopus Man for your reply, but there are no drivers for graphic cards on Mac! Especially on the iMac you could not change the graphic card, it's fully integrated in the system and there are only a few cards working on a Mac. Most of them are ATI Radeon cards. There is an issue with those cards known by Aspyr and it will cause slow gaming or freezing video in SC4, but this is perfectly solved by the SC4 patches, also provided by Aspyr. Just for your information...
