HI, I was wondering if there was a way to create a grayscale map that would create perfect canals.  I tried some on the STEX but the canals and inlets ae very choppy and rough.  I don't like using pegasus oppie or simgoobercanals because I have a water colour preference.  Any Ideas?1.gif

If the STEX maps turn out choppy, I'd suggest touching them up with the terrain tools first before going to mayor mode. Also, jpeg will introduce some difference between the original map and the result in the game. bmp format will not, but the file will be much bigger.

I don't think it is possible to create a greyscale map that will render prefectly square canals. The game seems to erode the terrain of each city as it renders. However, you can create a greyscale map with canals in it and then go in and touch up the surfaces after the render. I have found that .bmp greyscales don't erode as much as .jpg maps. I have never tried the other file types.

There are options in the exemplar files that can prevent the erroding of a map when it is rendered. I have been experimenting with the various options, and a full result of my tests will be posted here when I'm finished, in the mean time PM me and I'll tell u about what I've done. Or go here for a quick description of what files I'm altering in my tests.

THanks guys!  I just thought there might be an easier way than Terraforming by hand

Rochefort has a great tutorial on Sharp as Razor Rivers that can be found here: https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=71423&forumID=22&search=1&searchstring= . Unfortunately, though, it appears that the screenshots for steps 2-5 have been mixed up with another of his tutorials. Basically, use the terrain raising tool in God Mode, then use the digger tools to dig up perfectly straight trenches. Lower the terrain, and voila, perfect rivers, or canals. (I know you asked for a way other than by hand, but I think this is a relatively easy way to do it).
