Note that the growth of your cities is highly affected by the difficulty level. Easy allows the highest growth while Hard, the slowest.

100,000 in 30 years is quite good but isn't that hard to achieve. For example, you can surround a city with 4 fully-developed cities (or even 8, forming a complete ring). The demand from those neighbors should push you to 100k in a short time. I think I was able to hit 96k in 28 years at the Hard level using only 2 neighbors

Development speed is purely a function of demand.

You can get residential demand 4 ways:
1) Wait for Commercial and Industrial to grow.
2) Build C + I in a neighbor city.
3) Build lots of Civic buildings, like schools and hospitals
4) Lower taxes.

If you want your sims to stay, they need jobs, so lowering residential taxes without a creating more jobs is a very bad idea.

If you want to kickstart a region, do the following: (assuming hard difficulty)

1) Start a city, take out $1,500,000 in loans, and build nothing but City Colleges, ~10 coal powerplants, and roads. Spend all the money.

2) Start a second city, take out $200,000 in loans, and lay out residential zoning and services. You should hit 50K population almost instantly.

3) Go back to the first city and lay out Commercial and Industrial zones. Use your remaining $500,000 credit limit to keep yourself from going bankrupt on the previous loan payments and wait until you are solvent.

4) Return to the second city, and continue zoning. You may need to take out more loans to speed up the process, but at this point you should be covering your loan payments and making a solid $10K/month on top of that.

Using civic jobs as a kickstarter, it's pretty straightforward to start a new region and hit 100,000 residents in 5-10 years.

no i really dont like building neighbouring cities, it just messes up their status, it was only with the single city!

With just one city in a region, 100K residents in 10 years is a reasonable target. Using neighbors just gives you the 20% bonus from extrapolation and boosts your effective credit limit, but it's not necessary.

im working on a town at the moment and id say its one of my favourates coz i figured out to only make buildings, (high density) but only 1x1 tile which makes it look more real! iv got it just scraping 20,000, the area is not that spread out and i made a ringroad motorway around the northern half of it to stop it from growing out, it really looks cool nd irish/ european, im goin to post a few pics on it in a couple of mins so stay put!

hehee. No offense taken. I agree it totally sucks Zzzz's. I know it is boring, but that is the answer, to speed growth; a grid system.

EDIT: there is a tutorial for adding images to your City journals, on the Omnibus Table of contents, left sidebar.

my central city (medium tile) is currently at 266,000 after about 30 years. Most of my sims live in the suburbs so my regional population is 608,000. I havnt worked on the central city in about a week (been building subdivisons and durning some of the inner, older suburbs to have a few medium density condos).

cool, im shure i could perk my population up a good bit but my city is quite complicated so all i really have left is the zoning of small houses acting as suburbs to make it look somewhat real, if ya get what i mean?

Sounds really great FogeyBear. The thing about SimCity is; you can go for one or the other, but both is a bit tougher.  Mass Population or style and realism.

I am currently working on a Region that incorporates both grid and style, but it is taken 3 times longer to build it.

Maybe you are ready to start a CJ, FogeyBear? Show us your realistic views a bit, eh?

Waz up Tom? Welcome to ST!

Well, I can say that when you are a $%&^!, people will be nice and they will welcome you in with an eager hello.

However, just like the real world; people will have to warm up to you a bit. Once they see you are sticking around and sincere, they are more likely to interact.

My first CJ flopped, my second CJ flopped. determination made number three a success, but a chunk of that was due to my sticking around and not getting discouraged. Also some wonderful encouragement from Mr.Cinatit and many others.
They do not want to seem rude, but ST has had its share of bad manners and silly hackers. they have also had a handful of trouble makers who can't seem to just let it go. Not to mention, all web communities have their dedicated members they have trusted and relied on, only to have them disappear into Real Life Issues.
All that tends to make us sitizens wait and lurk, to see if you will hang and to see that you are not a nut case.....Don't know how I slipped by them so easily? hehee.

This is for one tile city square, not entire region.
I got 780,000 in less then 30 years.
I can easily achieve over 100,000 in 2 years.
Normal if I'm trying to make a big city is 65,000 to 80,000 in a year.
My region has over 7 million with lots of cities, each on one city tile.

Wowzers!! 7million! wonder if I will ever reach that high?

P.S. My one city tile of 1,009,000 in 33 years; also included a money cheat, so really my claim should be disqualified.
