The harbour area really looks impressive 44.gif Though I wouldn't like to be one of those fishermans everyday trying to maneuver amidst all those large merchant ships... 17.gif

I work on scale though! 19.gif Looking at harbours many times taught me one thing... Every ship has to move slowly and very precisely to reach the right location... sometimes backwards, with only a couple of miles per hour. This is the old harbour, so there is'n't much space. I did that on purpose. This is not a harbour where ships are supposed to go out all at once, since it's not directly at the seaside.

Look at this site: It has the harbour of Rotterdam (my inspiration) in satellite pics. You can click on the clear pictures to see a (copyrighted) view from above. It's very cool! Harbours are only small bodies of water sometimes.

I have an extra update for something special 2.gif

I would like to tell you a story...

After years of discussion Santa Lucia's city council approved the plan to give the city a new central railway-station. The plan was controversial, because a part of the city's central park would disappear and a huge area would start to look completely different whenever the station would indeed get build. That's because some high massive concrete buildings had to be destroyed to make space for the rails. But after all the debates a poll showed the people in Santa Lucia wanted the new station desperately. And when finally the finances weren't a problem anymore, the city council voted in favour of the ambitious plan.

The problem Santa Lucia had to deal with for many years was it's accessability by train. Ten years ago a huge modern station was build on the other side of the river, but as the years passed by most people complained about it. There was a lot of criminality, it was too far away from the big companies in the city and people always had to travel further with the expensive monorail-system or the underground. Therefore most people used the South Central Station near the WTC, but it had only two platforms so it was always very crowded. With one new, big railway-station on the right spot all problems could be solved.

Here are two screenshots to show you the old situation:

    centralparkbeforestation2se.jpg

    centralparkbeforestation29gd.jpg

So that's how it looked... First, bulldozers and draglines started some destruction in the park and it's environment... After some months of hard work, the area looked like this...

    downtownnewstationplanning4yo.jpg

On a terrain the machines were waiting... and the construction started.

Of course it took years before all was finished, but recently the city finally was releaved from sand, dust and bulldozers in the city centre! 39.gif

You can see the beautiful result here tomorrow 9.gif

NOOOOOOO not the park!!!!!!!!!!!! Progress once again rears its ugly head. 9.gif Where will the little 40.gif go?

BTW, I really liked your transportation map (linked on previous page). Your road layout was very nice - not too griddy yet still realistic for a large downtown. I have road layout issues (I suck) so I love seeing how well others do.

I shall have to return tomorrow to see what has taken the place of the park.

Here is the follow-up about the station 1.gif

The people in Santa Lucia could vote what kind of station they would like to have, because the three available options would more or less cost the same. They voted for an old-fashioned looking building, but with a modern touch. Not just a lot of concrete and steel, but a more sophisticated design with a lot of character. Well, on to the pictures... 9.gif

    newstation50kk.jpg

A lot of people agreed on the fact that nature shouldn't suffer too much, even though the station would be placed in the park. So the plan was not to build a new main road on all sides of the station, but to let nature dominate the area. Most facilities you find around big railway-station are all placed in or under the building. There is a huge parking garage, a shopping centre and more. Public transport is promoted with the build of a new monorail-station, and people also have an easy access to the subway system! 2.gif

    newstationfromtheair39ou.jpg

The tunnel-system for the trains was also constructed to save as much nature as possible. Only when they're about to reach the platforms trains come out of the tunnel. Now only the monorail crosses the park, but people can walk underneath.

    newstationfromtheair2vq.jpg

And the station from the air...

On the other site of the station, the rails connect to the existing track that was already in place before. A short tunnel and some fly-overs were needed to prevent delays and other problems.

    othersitestation4xo.jpg

This was all... I hope you like the new situation as much as the people in my city! 18.gif

I am not sure when I can update again on my Santa Lucia-port region... maybe on  wednesday.

Hello! Nice city you've got, very impressive!

Page 1, harbor pictures - Does anyone know what building that one beside SOMY's fishing port, brown with green roof, is? I'd like to get it here... Thanks in advance.

You can find that building somewhere in the thread about Japanese BAT's... it's a bit of a search, but I found that building mid-january I think. So it's not that long ago.

I don't have much time for updates these days. I do play Sim City 4 though, and I have some cool things to show soon!

I have some time now, so I deciced to update my journal right now 19.gif

A lot has changed since the last time I posted aerial screenshots, so here is a new one...

    santalucianewaerialscreenshot1.jpg

Now I can tell some about the work I did...

    - I moved my airport closer to the city, it looks more logical now... also in the light of future development.
    - I finished the terraforming on a special bay... You can see the see the mouth of the bay on the left side of the screenshot. That bay is necessary to use some ideas I had when I started my (second) Jacksonville-CJ. I cancelled it due to a lack of time, but I will just use the ideas in Santa Lucia.
    - I made a first set-up for the harbour... not in it's final shape yet (on the right side)
    - I made my dowtown more realistic and more beautiful... I reconstruced huge parts of downtown, especially on the west-side of the river.
    - Part of the new stuff in Downtown Santa Lucia is a historic town with a more Latin look.

Because my downtown looks different now, I give new screenshots... Even though most have been shown before 2.gif

    downtown1022tp.jpg

I think it's easy to see the changes! 44.gif Compare it with screens on page 1... The historical part wasn't possible without Oppie and Frogface, so I want to thank both for their great BAT-products! For a very long time I wasn't sure how to develop the western part of the city... But I've made the decision to work on hilly terrain... That means a challenge, but it will look good. The neighbourhoods you see near the top of the screenshot are on hilly terrain already. It took quite some time to make it right actually... Zoning is easy, but the terraforming and the roads demanded patience... lol

First, I want to post two screenshots of the new lowrise neighbourhoods...

    newlowrise15nw.jpg

There isn't much to tell about this... Other than that the New York-homes are a great addition to the game!  You can found those on the STEX.

    Here's another one...

    newlowrise24nv.jpg

The last screen for today shows a new railway-station I made myself with some lots... I removed the huge 5-track Portuguese station, the one with the light green and white... I used Frogface's station as my Central Station, so I had to make a smaller one here... This part on the riverside was totally reconstruced weeks ago because it wasn't good enough and in some ways unrealistic. Now it looks better...

    newstation2yy.jpg

The station is used by subway-trains and normal trains... There are 6 platforms. You can see a lot of great, new BAT's on this screenshot... and quite some NDEX-stuff 48.gif

So... not much of a story in here, but I hope you like the progress... and the new aerial screenshot shows a city that's slowly growing bigger... So I am a small step closer to a finished city!
