Commute Time killing my residential

I've reached 100k poeple in my major regional city, but I'm having a problem... Screenshot is below, sorry if its a little big, taken on 1280x1024 resolution.

It's pretty obvious where my defined downtown is developing, but the residential buildings surroundning are all going abandoned due to commute time! I've tried adding avenues, monorail (which is never used wtf?). Any help would be greatly appreciated on how to solve commmute time, those buildings and a few others... me no like!

(Problem is also starting to occur in other parts of the city as well, oh and yeah the Golf Course is getting moved)

Also EDUCATION, how long does it take after placing a few schools for the education levels to go up? I've placed a few around the downtown area to raise the education (alot of the abandoned have a low education level)

Well for one...fix that picture.....

For two...try and force your citizens to use your highways and monorail.Lead you highway and monorail to the downtown so people can go straight to it and back home....

For three....well....force them to try a subway system?

Well I see you have some railway and highway there, but they don't seem to go from the residential areas to the work areas (commercial and industrial).

At that population I think I'd be looking to use rail more extensively, and integrating it with busses.

I also tend to use avenues as feeders to the jobs areas ie have a small cluster of roads leading to an avenue which bypasses other residential into the commercial and or industrial region.

I have also found it useful to have the different systems go to different areas. For example in one residential area, the subway only goes to the commercial area, but the rail goes to the industrial area.

Monorail I hardly ever use, its mainly good for wealthy sims or eye candy.

Tunnels for anything are also very handy for any transit system eg a highway tunnel that starts near the outer edge of the city with one or two onramps, then goes underground bypassing the inner city residential and emerges in the centre of the commercial district.

And education takes many years to rise. I usually put elementary schools when the city is founded, but I find there is not much point putting in high schools for many years after that, and colleges much later if at all. Libraries are also good value for increasing EQ.

edit: and please make your image smaller, its too hard to look at 46.gif

Take this link and download the file called roadtop subway and bus stations and/or roadtop bus staions. This will give you a file that allows you to build stops on the road. Make a good network, and hopefully the sims will use it. If not, use an ordinance called commuter shuttle service. This will encorage sims to use your mass transit. Also upgrade the roads to one-way roads in a block form. Commute time is often increased by overcongestion. Problem solved.

Education Question: Place Large Schools where wanted, and have enough colleges for your population(the colleges have citywide coverage)No High Schools are never needed.l

I'd say 10-or-so years for education to rise after you put in a school.

My educational advice:  To get a respectable education rating/EQ, you only need elementary schools and a college.  I put High schools, libraries, and museums to give it a further boost.

I have very little luck with public transit usually.

And please follow the image guidelines.  I know it's your 1st post (and I posted 1024*768 images in my first post) but you should be aware of the 800*600 limitation.  It's a form of politeness and courtesy to those with dial-up like myself.

To get your sims to use a mass transit solution, it has to take the least amount of tiles, that is, unless you download the Radical Ordinance mod by RaphaelNinja and activate one of the Mass Transit Strategies (e.g. MT Strategy - Mass Transit Only.) Regardless, it takes many, many years for education to rise. Suppose you have 3 schools covering the same house. The children in that house can't go to more that one school right? Such is the way of SimCity 4.

Well in my region, most of them are densely populated, and I mean too dense. There are no spaces between buildings. I just literally filled up the whole map with highrise residentials lol. Kewl thing is, I'm not having a problem with Commute Time that much. If I do the traffic graph, the entire map is either yellow or red, (some green). I'm not getting any killed residentials though. I suggest you build lots of bus and subway stations (dont forget to connect subways with subway rails), especially in the most dense places. That will help solve the problem too. (I don't know why I'm not having a problem)

Sorry guys I'll be sure to post smaller pictures next time (19 in monitors are great44.gif)

This is going to be hard, a lot of demolishing and changing things around will be needed, I'll post and update, probably in like a week as I don't get around to playing to much.
