There are only 3 sizes of cities you can have in a region, Small,Medium and Large. You can tell what city size you have because of the file called the config which should come with every map. Red=Small Cities Green=Medium Cities Blue=Large cities. If you want large cities download and render the maps which have a totally blue config file. An example of this can be found here:

Another question is, do regions have to be square? Can the config file have black in it to have no cities in that area? I've seen regions from people here which are weird shapes, not sure if they just PhotoShop a bunch of regions together or something to get their region pic 1.gif

regions can be of any size

if you put blacked out areas in the config map, or use any other colours besides red, green and blue (and correctly) you will have blank spaces in the region

I belive there was one city journal where the region shot actually looked like a stick fuigured man

not sure if colouring in the black areas later on will affect the region though...personelly never done this

if you want to use windows paint to create custom config maps try out this thread

when you see things of that nature what you are seeing is a map that has been expanded.

The answer to your question is yes, you can have regions that are odd shapes.

Think of your region as a big square made up of 4 smaller squares.

If you want to expand the map into the east, then open the paint program and put a blue, green, or red square on the right part of the config file.

Example:

X = Large Blue Square

XX
XX

You start with that. But you can increase it to this if you like.

X
XXX
XX
  X

The your region has an odd shape. In the config file you would put black pixels in there.

However, for each addon, you are going to have to hand terraform.
