Residential-only city - buses/mass transit

I'm going to build a large low-density residential suburb sity beside my larger bustling cities. But I was wondering if I toss in busstops in this type of setting, will they take buses across city boundaries?

If I build a big train station, will they take buses from their homes to the busstop near the train station, and they take the train to work?

 

Noting that I never make my roads/avenues connect to other cities, I prefer to only connect via highways/mass transit.

 

I'm asking mainly because I believe I've done this before, and the buses weren't used at all, they all drove to work...and they weren't upset much about it either.

Yes, they'll most definitely do intercity transit in both the ways you mentioned.
