Question about the game

Hi, I have some question about this game. Hopes someone can answer it

1. What's the differences between Sim City 4, SC4: transportation and SC4: rush hour ? How many kind of SC 4 that have been released ? Also, I have SC4: rush hour, should I have SC4: trasportation too ? I saw that transportation is an add on, and rush hour is an expansion pack.

2. Here's my computer spec:
- Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
- 256 DDR memory
- Power Color Geforce 2 GTS 64mb
- Win XP SP2

Unfortunately, the game run slow at large city. I'm planning on an upgrade another 512mb memory or a new 128/256mb video card. Which one should I choose ? Well, I can afford those two, but if one is enough, than the other one isn't necessary.

3. How many cars that strees, roads, avenues and highway can hold for a normal traffic ?

4. Is it okay if I have a public service overcapacity ? Does it affect on commute time ?

I can answer Q1. SC4= the original game, most downloads from this website are not compatible with this
Rush Hour=Expansion Pack. All downloads will work from this site.
Transportation=I don't have this so I'm not sure but I think this came free with Rush Hour when it first came out and it gave you extra transport options. But the NAM should counteract this if you don't have this as the NAM gives many transportation options. The NAM (Network Add On Mod) can be found here:

1) theres basicly 2 versions of the game a: Simcity4 (original game aka Simcity vanilla on the ST boards)

b: simcity4 Rush hour expantion pack...which requires the original
there is the Deleux version which is just the two stated above in 1 complete package that was released later on

I don't recomend playing with just the vanilla version as it has many bug that are fix with RH and it won't allow you to use any lot that containt any batted material or the Bats themselves plus many other newer mods and other  things...too many to list
the transportation pack was just a extra bonus to those that pre-ordered SC vanilla..it's now available to download from the official site for free...might be part of the deluex version...not 100% sure on the last one since I have original and RH versions

2) spec look fime except for the ram...i would recomend getting more as the game with the addition of custom content can be quite labor intensive on your system...more custom content..more juice is required...I would go with at least 1 gig of ddr ram if you can afford it...the less you have in ram...the more lag you will inconter special in large populated cities
graphic cards i don't know much about...leave that part to someone whom knows more on the subject  , but size does matter go with as high as you can afford as the game can be quite a hog in that area too...i have a 128 card and 1.5 gigs of ram but only a 2 gig processor

3) unmoded capasity I belive is around 65,000 (it's an odd strange number actully)sims per city to city connection...mods such as the nam may alter in city capsities.. the original capsities....think it's 500 per street...1000 per road...1500 per avenue...2000 per one way road...i forget the highways exactly, but it's around 4,000 ...think all rail is 3,000

over capasity MT and/roads will affect commute time, more traffic...longer comutes...there are many modded lots on the board that can once again alter the stats of MT lots, speeds and capasity of all transit

I recomend you start with this thread if you have deleux version or the rushour expantion pack with SC vanilla...skip the transit option list and use the NAM36.gif found on the homepage just scroll down it's in the centre....but the last part is truely an option, and I'm sort of bias in the catigory3.gif

it will get your game ready to use the STEX (simtropolis exchange) properly

welcome and use the thread..it's really really worth it..i've used it myself49.gif and follow the instruction

You are fine except for the 256MB. With XP SP2 the minimum memory is 512MB due to the horrendous overhead of this overcoded monster operating system. However, if you are going to purchase more memory get a 512MB stick. This will give you 768MB which is ample, even with a reasonable number of plugins.

To recap on the versions:

  • SC4 - The original release (Also called SC4 vanilla)
  • RH - Rush Hour Expansion Pack requires SC4. This is the complete game
  • Transportation is a download from the main site that gives you the air force base.
  • Deluxe is a repackage of SC4+RH

Note all versions with rush hour require Update 1 from the mother site. This has to be selected by the region you are in. The one on the portal page is for North America. If you are not in North America click on the Help tab in the mother site and chose updates.

Thanks for the replies. Altough this is my 2nd post, but I've been an old member (I joined this site on 2004).

So, the transportation is only give an air force base ? Not worth for download I guess, since my internet connection is slow as hell. Also, I'm not a fan of mods, so I'll stick with original. (Maybe I could try donwloading NAM in the future, but again, I don't have a fast internet connection). 45.gif

I have played this game since 2004, then leave it for some time. Right now, I start to play it again b/c I saw some huge commercial skycrapper in this forum (I've never got them until now).

The more problem that cause me a headache until now is the traffic. This time, I want to create a city with low traffic even when they're crowded.29.gif

I have a question about commute. What does it means exactly ? Is it only home-work (commecial or industry) and vice versa ? Or it include industry to commercial as well ?

Last question (for now 31.gif). When, the region rendered, is it safe to change config file ? (I've create some cities in that region)

Also, how the numbering works (The file that named : City - New City ([number]).sc4) ? Is it form top right to bottom left ?

comute time is how long it takes to get from their home to their job and back again,Comercial or Industrial, depends where the sims work..either or really... the shorter the better...if it gets too high you may have ppl abondoning their homes looking for a place closer to work
sims will only have 1 job...but simms in the same building can have differnt jobs...some industrial...others comercial...just like in real life

the NAM has many differnt plugins that can alter traffic and capsities for ttransportaion...from realistic...to super radical...I personelly suggest getting it as it has many bug fixes in it and the pathfinding greatly improves the game...you can install parts of it if it hogs too much memmory

theres no air traffic in the game...it's just eye candy...the airports and airfoce bases offer cap relief to the cities only, but they do look kewl

think also the transportation download has some other goodies like  new boats and stuff like that...I believe they are all eye candy though

as far as thew # system for the cities...i belive it starts in the top left hand corner or bottom left corner...and goes diagonally....never really actually figured it out peronelly..42.gif

don't change the config file after rendering...it will dump citieas into your download section leaving blanck space where you changed...might even dump all the cities in the download section...not 100% sure never actually done this...but reports say it's a bad bad thing

you can change the config file before rendering and change the city lay-outs...but make sure you don't change the over all demensions of the config map...if you do...the region won't render corectly...might not render at all
