To the Mac Community:

I've set up a BSC Mac Archive which can be found here:

BSC Mac Archive

All BSC releases uploaded here will be "Manual Install" Zip files. As of this post, there are only 2 files on the STEX from BSC that are exclusively ".exe" installed, Usakos Church and St. Martins Church. Usakos Church can be downloaded now, and as soon as I receive St. Martins in the Zip format, I will post it.

Please read the accompanying "Read Me" files for installation instructions and other information regarding each BAT/Lot. EDIT: Actually, installation instructions will be here.

If you have problems or questions regarding the BSC Mac Archive, please post them here, as BSC has no direct involvement with the download page.

If you have problems or questions regarding installation that are not answered by the "Read Me" file EDIT: in this thread, please post them here. There are numerous people here in the Mac community who I am confident can help.

In the next few days (or maybe weeks), I would like to pull together some of the excellent information from the various forums, such as plug-in folder management, textures and props, etc., to help get all of us in the Mac community up to speed on these issues. I hope everyone will contribute to this by answering questions and sharing their knowledge.

Thanx

Thanks k, funny how I just checked this thread now, after a few weeks of being involved. I am just happy to help out my fellow Mac users and to support a great site like Simtropolis. 1.gif

I'd quit playing SC4 because it just took so long for RH to become available on Mac. When it finally shipped I came back to Simtropolis and encountered a whole new level of complexity involving BATs and Prop files and dependancies. And .exe files. Arrgh!

Frankly I'd begun to become seriously discouraged. And as my fellow Mac users know know all too well, it frankly takes a lot to discourage us. We get the short end of the stick as a matter of course. It's why I've abandoned the Sims: Pay more; get less.

Thanks so very much for this site and the explanations of which files need to go into which folders (my doc vs the game's main Plug-in folder)

I long to be able to use PEG's pond and hydro electric dam.

I go all the way back to the original SimCity (SimTower, if truth be known)and I missed, no, not the crude graphics, but the ability to place water above sealevel. As gorgeous as the new terraforming is it's utterly unrealistic with regard to water...ever heard of , say, Lake Tahoe, ya'll?1.gif

    Yes.

After considerable blundering around on Pegasas' site I discovered that a simple registration was all that was required to access the files.

I'm still a bit hesitant about texture files such as those which support Peg's very cool forest files. Do they go at the game level or at the user level plugin files? How about the 24/7 modd?

Somewhere around here I've might even still have my old SC2K Urban Renewal Kit which was the primative forerunner of the Lot Editor. Like, wow. You could add blinking lights and draw, pixel by pixel, primative little treeish objects. So pleased with myself when I made a birdbath.

    >

Just read the thread about a new approach to water above sea level with considerable interest. Realistic shorelines!

    Many thanks.

Well, let's see if we can do something about that hesitancy. As SimGoober says in his post I linked to above, the knowledge on this changes as new things are tried.

As far as textures/props, these files need to be shared by numerous lots, so they need to be higher up in the file structure. Installation of SimGoobers RLS Home series provides a good example of this, with the RLS Extras.dat file being placed above the .SC4Lot and .dat files.

This is why when I moved my Texture/Prop folder, I named it 1Texture/Props thus making it the first file in the plugin folder, and the first one to be loaded up when the game is started (within the Documents/.../Plugins folder). That way, everything else that is loaded after that can share the various textures/props. Now I wasn't having any serious problems when that folder was in my Applications/.../Plugins folder, but moving it did clear up the St. Martin problem, so I'll leave it there for now, until I have another problem...;-)

As far as mods, these files usually overwrite some piece of SC4 code, and thus should be in the Application folder. Placing them in the Documents file may work as well, but I did have a problem with crashing when I tested placing mods in the Doc folder, so I have them in the App folder, with no problems.

I hope I haven't confused you, or anyone else, even more. I'm not claiming any expertise on this, just trying to boil down what I know from Grampa Al and SimGoober's posts on the subject (as well as a couple exchanges with them), and my own experiences.

I don't think there is any one, exact way to structure these files and folders (well, maybe there is, but only the Maxis/EA coders know it), so if your file/folder structure is working for you, play and don't worry about it.

    Happy Holidays!

Well, I, for one, will nominate kbooms1w for member of the year.

Far as I'm concerned he's the llama's knees.

Still haven't located a suitable SC4 and am deeply reluctant to spring for $35-40 for a PC Deluxe to obtain 'free' downloads without commercial value from the EA site so as to have full functionality in a game and expansion pack for which I have already paid full retail + shipping + donation to this site + endless aggravation with Aspyr's endless retreating release date issues surrounding RH.

I'm already reeling from my recent encounter with the aftermath of Cingular-AT&T merger wherein my $150 Motorola cell phone is now useful only as a paperweight since Cingular informs me that (although they sell this exact same Motorola model) mine is 'not compatible' with their system programing needs' and their voice recognition system which apparently doesn't speak Texa-Louisianan.

    Hrrrrpm!

I ended up literally growling - and that, boys and girls, seems to be how you get to talk to a human being @ Cingular...

    Dog and Duck, indeed.

When I lived in Shreveport LA, back in the dark and dismal 80's when my whole section of the country were, in the brilliant words of Lester Thurow, involuntarily enrolled inflation fighters (i.e. 20% unemployment rate), we had a real English pub run by an immigrant Brit from Nottingham. It was called the Dog and Bird. Well, officially anyway. After a few (Imperial) pints of best bitter : The Bog and Dird.

    Heh.

So I definitely need this establishment in my cities.

    Thanks.

Great to see this forum! I've been toying with placement of most of the files where after much effort, some work and some don't. Is there a place where I can go to find mac only files?

Also, has anyone experienced an issue with the Palms that are supposed to light different colors at night, but don't? Is that just a mac problem? I can't get any of them to work properly.

Thanks! Glad I found this group.44.gif

    clhough,

There are no mac only files, .dat, .sc4lot, etc. files work on PC and mac. If you let me know some specifics as to what is not working, maybe I, or someone else in here, can help you out.

As to night lights on the Palms, you need the latest update from Maxis, which allows nightlighting on custom BATs/Lots, but unfortunately, Macs can't download from the official site. The only way to do so is to buy a PC version, register at the site with that serial number, then download the update to a PC (maybe a work computer, or a friends), run the .exe (it comes with an installer unfortunately) and transfer the .dat that is extracted to your Mac. This goes for all Maxis updates (including the infamous bldgprop.dats, 1 and 2). If you can track them down some other way, more power to you....
