hmmmm, well, your topic sounds a little vague.  as it is for the show us your topics I am going to have to request that you post an example of what you want.  in fact, I am still a little foggy about the difference between a planned city and a gridded city.  apparently there is a difference but they sound like the same thing to me seeing as how a grid is a kind of plan.

ok.. i like this topic cuz i do have a planing concept 4 a city...

i like to devide a lot my citys... i always separate industrial from residential and comercial, and R and C are like joined... and thats itlol

If i can run my own city i would ban all subways in my city be couse thier are noise and dirty and i would replace the subways with monorails for the city centers and connection to the airports and for the suburbs light rails.most of my steets would be one ways and wide open ave and for my reason for my idea to use one way streets for most of my lay wouts so it would keep traffice control and traffic congestion at lower level and for the tax rate at differnt rates over time so it would keep the people happy and for my city location it would be on a river be couse rivers are cities best friend for makeing money and over time i will tell you more helpfull concepts to build a success full city

i'd plan roads and transit beforehand, i'd think of ways to make bus work just as good as light rail before i spent more money, i'd leave as much trees and have parks and make it all pretty, and i'd try to have more middle class that the other classes.

im back and on lithium i like using subways in a big city it gives the down and dirty urban feel to a city but only dust uses the subways lol

I find it odd that so many of you have trouble with subways.  when I build big cities subways are usually used more than car and in fact are usually the number one form of transit used.  perhaps the reason for lack of subway use is that your city has too many R$$$?  R$$$ mostly prefer to drive.  when I build big cities I keep R$$$ taxes high to discourage them from moving in.  my big cities have about an 80% R$$ concentration and R$$ love the subway.

 

but, to keep the spirit of the post alive (if I understand the post) I usually plan my big cities with transit and mass transit in mind before I build anything.  I usually run all my transit lines first then I zone, then I place civic buildings when needed.  I feel that placing the transit first is how a city is really built anyway.

I find that when ever I plan ahead for a city(pre placed transport utilits Etc.)it turns out to be boring or not last for more than a couple years because of $problems.

In my big cities the only mass transit system I use is the subway it's the most efficient and space saving system, I place a stop or two for every block so lazy sims don't have to walk very far and they do use it, heavily. I had to make a custom lot of 9k stations because most of my stations got overcrowded, some stations had 25K users!?! 

 

I also plan my mass transit before zoning otherwise placing the stations after the high-rise are coming in is next to impossible. I miss the button from SC3 that showed you the civic buildings only.

 

I don't like messing with the other forms of mass since I think they are ugly looking comparing it with my urban styling. I do use some rail system but mostly for freight and intercity travel.

My roads are mostly avenues and one way road avenues with grass and many parks in between. I try to keep the green and recreational areas to the max. I got a lot of custom parks from stex and I placed them all over, this keeps my sims happy and hearty.
