SYM Productions has decided to start another thread... it's the SkyWalk thread! 19.gif

For those who don't know what SkyWalks are, here's an example:

skywalk9ag.jpg

They are corridors that connect downtown buildings to form a network, so that people don't have to go outdoors (because it's really cold, or there's really bad traffic) to go from offices to shopping to home in their apartment!

Some people have been telling us that we should re-create these because... well because they haven't been done before!  So after half an hour of blood, sweat, and tears, (21.gif) we worked out this VERY preliminary (3.gif) model and tested it...

As you can see, it lines up well with most Simcity 4 buildings (floor-wise) 48.gif
czarjun714211347879453kc.png

and pedestrians use it to get across the street! 4.gif
czarjun714211347883543xm.png
These will be part of the transportation menu, as they are pretty much designed as toll booths, with no fee 20.gif.  The model is in a retexturing stage, and there will be different versions, angled both up and down, as well as at 60 and 120 degree angles (not just perpendicular).

This version is approximately textured to Winnipeg skin... but there will be other variations too!

Any compliments, comments, or constructive criticism is ALWAYS accepted!  29.gif

I think they look brilliant! I just love the idea. You should make oe in a darker more bland kind of colour, so it matches alot of simcity buildings.

Great work spy! I can't wait to see these released. 19.gif

Yeah, I agree with Vester. It's a great idea (There are a couple of these in uptown Saint John), but the textures need some tweaking. Right now it stands out a bit too much. And how about a support structure (i.e. a pillar or two) as well, just for realism's sake?

It's still better than anything I can pull off though, so I will commend you for any SC4 Model file you are able to churn out. 44.gif

A longer 2- or 3-level variety would help those of us who desire to create an over-road shopping centre - a massive gaping hole at present. Just about every shopping centre I can think of (not all of them, but most) here in Sydney cross a road somewhere.

    Great work so far though.

Oh, and get those Sims to TURN THE LIGHTS OFF! THEY'RE WASTING POWER!

    lol

Ok I just had an idea... does anyone know how to mod my set of skywalks so that you could just flick through the different angles and such with the TAB key (like in the NAM).  I would probably have 4 or 5 color variations and at 15-20 angles each, it would really fill up the Transportation Menu quick... 24.gif

Deal!  Thanks Buggi! 44.gif  So I assume one of the great modders knows how to TABbify my set? 3.gif

Sym: this is by far, the newest innovation for SC4, bud! I will love this one and rate it accordingly on the STEX. This is a much needed addition to the game experience. Thank you big!

Tabify? doesn't that become automatic in four directions, in the LE or in game? if you mean angles such as 45 degrees, wouldn't you have to BAT them each?

make the turquoise semi-transparent(opac). runner lights could trace the interior ceilings at night.

the roof could remain solid texture. you could easily make intersected torus' skewed and slightly flattened, like bubble domes as ribbed roof sections.

(One object I have really played around with in BAT is the torus.)

    Sweeeeeeet!

The idea itself is amazing, and already I see you are off to a running start, and as close as to those walks as you can get.  My best advice to you is to find some sorts of glassy texture that matches the one you have in the city picture, so that the skywalk doesn't look crystal clean and shapy... Unless youve already done that? Hmm...

Yeah, running lights would make it look gud, like on the PED Elevator... Yeah...

wow, these are perfect, with the exception of the library sky-walk, its dead on to the real thing downtown. I just wish they had more of these around Winnipeg in the freezing cold winter.

Thank you for all the generous commments everyone! 43.gif  It's very much appreciated! 29.gif

@Aldara: Thanks I hadn't even thought of it... I'll turn to Quirlix if Buggy can't get this done... but I imagine he will be able to.  I might have more stuff that will need modding so I'll ask Quirlix then... but thanks anyway! 19.gif

    @AJ: Wouldn't that be nice... 18.gif

@Frnd: It was my own made up word that meant that you could cycle between the different angles of skywalk while building in-game using TAB... yes I will need to render each one seperately... not to much effort needed for that part 2.gif.  Actually the current pic HAS a translucent texture but with a white tile floor in the backgroud so I guess it doesn't show much... 21.gif  I'll look into changing it slightly.  Now that I know that the SkyWalks work, I'll work a lot closer on the model. 5.gif  Wow I forgot to give you guys a night pic... I already have runner lights, if I think I know what you're talking about...

@Nealos: Thank you... 43.gif  Yes, I am perfecting the texture and we'll see how you guys like it...

@Picard: Thanks! 48.gif  I always appreciate Winnipeggers coming up to me to tell me what they think, because it's them that really know each of the buildings that I BAT inside and out. 1.gif

That all sounds great Sym. Can't wait to see it done. I should wait until your finished to say anything, eh? sorry about sounding a bit critical. Just that you got me very interested.

EDIT: Sym: Don't mean to sound ignorant, but what exactly is your AKA? Sym Productions or CDI? Or is CDI Spy a group of some sort?

I'll get to know you better, I promise.

    Ask qurlix??

Well, I hate to rain on your parade, but you cannot use tab rotation for lots, or anything other than puzzle pieces and interchanges. It is very unlikely that this will ever change in the future.

But I am glad to see these, as there are quite a few in Milwaukee. They look pretty good already, (I wouldn't mind using them the way they are) so the finals have a lot of potential. 44.gif

Ok thx for letting us know... but couldn't the SkyWalks be modded to BE a puzzle-piece? 42.gif  It's not unlike the pedestrian bridge that come with the pedestrian malls... 41.gif

EDIT: I need Winnipegger's input here... what do the columns look like?  Do any of you remember? 34.gif

Some of those long examples seem to defy physics though.. There needs to be a puzzle peice with support columns (esp. with the over-avenue and over-freeway lots). It'd be cool to have end peices with stairs/elevators (gotta make it accessible for everyone!) so we can just make elaborate ped bridges! I do like how you can just stick it in and connect buildings!

BTW-are you soliciting proposals for other skywalks (I call them skybridges)? There's a few in town here that would be cool, and I can send you pics!

As a former pegger, I can tell you that the supports on the long set that go across Portage Avenue, (the 6 lane major road in the latter picture) are just simple round concrete pillars placed in the median and the sidewalks. There were built at the same time as Portage Place, (the shopping center on the left side) and are of the same architectural style as the mall. The ones in Winnipeg are also gernerally brown/tan in hue, with greenish roofs. I believe that the first picture in this thread is the one between the main post office and the centennial library and it is pretty much entirely brown, I am pretty sure that there are no external supports on that one either. For most of the the smaller road crossing skywalks the supports were built into the ends |--| and hidden in the the siding of the buildings that they connect too.

    Hope this answers some questions
