Could someone please give me a simple, easy to read tutorial how to download this region correctly so that I can play it on my game. Sorry if this may be a stupid question but I am quite new to downloding regions and I do want to get it right the first time.

Thanks

Hi,

Upon clicking the "Download" button, you will be presented with the option to download two files; you need to download them both.

Head into SimCity 4 and create a new region; in this example, the region will be named "Eaton", then quit back to desktop.

Copy and paste both of the downloaded images into Documents/SimCity 4/Regions/Eaton (replace Eaton with the name of the region you just created).

Open up SimCity 4 again, and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R. This will make a new window appear. Within the new region, you need to navigate to your Documents/SimCity 4/Regions/Eaton folder, selecting the greyscale image from the download entitled "Eaton_Jhipolito.jpg", and then click OK. The game will then render the region.

If, for some reason, one of the above steps does not work, try using SC4Mapper to install your maps. Once installed, all you have to do is click "Create Region", select "Greyscale Image" format, and in the next window which opens, select the path to the downloaded "Eaton_Jhipolito.jpg" and also the downloaded "config.bmp" files.

Hopefully that helps,

Sam.

One could mention that before opening the renderer, it is necessary to navigate to the new region.

Indeed, however after creating a region it becomes active; quitting to desktop and re-opening later will load the active region.

Indeed.  I don't seem to have found that to be the case on Linux.

When I download it it comes up with a map and just a small picture of a box. Am I downloading it right? What do I do from there?

Please post the URL for this map and I'll have a look at it.  There is a redirect of this post to the STEX forum immediately following this post.  Did you read the thread?

    Thank you.

This is a regular game renderable map, quite large.  It will present you will a large region.

After downloading both files (desktop is as good a place as any) use Windows Explorer to open the folder C:\<your account>\Documents\SimCity 4\Regions

Make a new region folder here named Eaton

Drag and drop the two files from wherever you downloaded them into this folder (Eaton).

    Close Windows Explorer

    Start the game

When you arrive at the region screen, if you are not already at the Eaton map, navigate there.

You will get a display of many large tiles (cities) as this is the set up in the config.bmp file.

Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+r to activate the renderer.  This brings up a file dialogue box.

Navigate to the Eaton_Jhipolito.jpg file in the files list and click on the icon to the left of the file.  Make sure the file name is now in the file selection box at the bottom.

    Click OK.

Your computer will display the busy symbol (hourglass) for a very long time.  THIS PROCESS MAY NOT BE INTERRUPTED IN ANY WAY.  YOU MAY NOT ALT-TAB OR ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL THIS RENDER FINISHES.  BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THIS MAP THIS COULD TAKE UP TO AN HOUR (OR MORE).  GO PLAY IN THE TRAFFIC OR FIND OTHER THINGS TO DO WHILE THIS RUNS.

When the render has completed you will be presented with the region map as designed by the author.  You may then open a city and play.

A word to map makers: While the system allows you to create the two files and put them out there naked, why not put them in a *.zip file together with a readme rather than leave them hanging for innocent newcomers confusion?

EDIT: An hour later.  Rendered this map and it is OK.  Looking interesting with lots of plains, some moderate hills and some river estuaries including a set of barrier islands.  Could be a lot of fun.
