Instead of bogging down the thread with a bunch of attached images, I'll link you to some sites full of images. I especially appreciate the olde-tyme colored drawings of yesteryear. Another thing, I've never even been to NYC... imagine what I'll find when I get the privilege of actually seeing it myself one day!

If we're talking big-time skyscrapers, I'd have to say I like the Woolworth building on Broadway by City Hall. The tallest building in the world for nearly 20 years, it managed to keep that Romanesque look to it, instantly reminding you of New York's heritage as the ambassador city to the Old World.

As far as smaller skyscrapers go, I'm a fan of the Flatiron Building between 5th and Broadway at 23rd St by Madison Square. Although some people might not consider it a skyscraper by today's standards, it is a marvel of turn-of-the-20th-century engineering. Instead of making the city change its shape to accomodate a more standard rectangular footprint, designer Daniel Burham took advantage of the irregular configuration of the area's streets to create a look and feel that is so distinctly its own, it's one of the most widely featured buildings in even the most recent motion pictures!

My favorite low-rise building (I of course, have not had time to look at them all!) is the delightfully old-school Jefferson Market Library . If I hadn't been told it was on 6th Avenue in Lower Manhattan's Greenwich Village, I would have thought it was a well-maintained medieval building in Central Europe. A wonderful example of New York's cosmopolitan atmosphere!

Why are you guys so negative about his grammer. Obviously his first language is not English, plus if you want to post you should at say something that has a slight relevance to the current topic.....
Anyway, My favorite building I have to say will be the new Bank of America building in New York. Its environmentaly friendly, and it just plain looks cool.

SilentRob, I hope you have the chance to actually make the journey and come here one day. You'll never forget the trip.

Well, technically BoA (Bank of America) Tower hasn't been completed yet. It's still a construction site at 6th and 42nd.2.gif

My favorites are; the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building (the view walking out of Madison Square Park is wonderful)

Really, I love all of them from Castle Clinton down in the Battery to the Cloister's up in Inwood to the Bronx County Courthouse over to the Williamsburg Savings Bank in Brooklyn. Hard to choose one because they're all special in their own way and contribute to the fabric of the city.

I would say the new Freedom tower, if they ever get the damn thing built....

Personally, my favorite thing about New York is it's kickass subway system (which I was on this morning).

However, having roots here, having lived the first 2 and a half years of my life here, and now going to college here, I would definitely say I'm a fan of the Bronx, or as The Terminator calls it The Boogie-Down BX. Seriously, the Middletown area is the old hood for my family. My dad grew up at 1619 Edison Avenue (I have no qualms about giving the adress since the house was sold years ago), and I was brought home from Einstein Hospital to the apartment upstairs there. But after a couple of years, my dad finished his internship and got a job as a doctor in Stamford, CT, and so we moved there (and have had 3 different adresses there). First at 255 Strawberry Hill Avnue (I don't remember the appartment number), and then at 26H Weed hill Avenue. Again, It's been 13 and 9 years since we've lived in those places, respectively, so giving the adress is no issue. I will not give out the current adress, though.

But yeah, NYC pwnz. Go NYC Subway and go Bronx!

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

the Chrystler Building and Rockefeller Center are my favorite new york buildings.

p2h5, it would be What's your favorite building in New York not what you said, and authors can't edit thread titles, and don't be mean! 7.gif

But I don't really like how all of the buildings have so many tiers (I think they were the result of some building ordinances in the city). I like tiers at the tops of buildings, or a few skinny ones along it's height, but in general I don't like so many tiers. 1.gif

Jasoncw, one reason why New York has so many tiers or set back buildings is due to the 1916 Building Ordinance. This was interestingly caused by the Equitable Building Downtown. When finished, it cast an enormous shadow on Broadway and the streets below. People were not happy so the ordinance was enacted. A little New York triva for the day.

Duke87, The subway system is great, maybe even the best. I have a love/ hate relationship with the MTA though, mainly due to the 4,5,and 6.

Yes, the Bronx is certainly under appreciated. Especially among some tourists, who base their opinions of the Bronx on Hollywood movies.21.gif. Not all, but some. Also, I was flipping through some New York guidebooks at the Barnes and Noble in Astor Place (curious to see how they portray the city) and I noticed most of them skipped the Bronx. Going to Riverdale, you'd think you

Duke87 as a semi-newyorker how you stand behind such a sacreligious project as the freedom tower

yea, out of all of the architectual talent there is they had to pick freedom tower. Most of the buildings off the STEX would be much better.

When I was in Atlanta I saw its flatiron building, but since I learned that there was one in New York, and then I wasn't sure if the one in Atlanta was really called the flatiron building, but now I'm cleared up! I'm not crazy! 1.gif

My favorite NYC building... hmmm, hard to say, since I've never been there.

I guess I'd have to say Penn Station (the destroyed one). That way, you all can't blame me for never going there!

Seriously, it was an incredible building. Lofty and open, it was like a palace welcoming travelers to the Big Apple. I guess it's change into the modern Penn Station reflects the fact that most inter-city travel has shifted to air nowadays. Train stations are something menial, simply a place to wait while you go home every day.

Used to be, kids about to embark on a trip would get excited about going to the huge, noisy, interesting train station. Now, they get excited about going to the airport.

What exactly is so sacreligious about the freedom tower? It looks much better than two giant grey steel pillars....

Yeah, seriously... I was going to list Penn as my favorite lo-rise, but then I found out it had been torn down. It was really cool how it was designed as an ancient Greek temple on the outside, a Renaissance cathedral on the inside, and used it as a major convergence center for the most important factor in contemporary NY life.

Cryin' shame it had to be destroyed for the sake of MSG.

Yeah, Penn was torn down in the 60s. The railroad was bleeding money like crazy and since all the tracks, platforms and the waiting area were below street level, they decied to demolish the aboveground parts and stick money-producing stuff on top. Didn't work, they still went bankrupt by the end of the decade. Plus the current modernized station is really badly designed and hard to get around. It's more like an ill-planned, windowless airport than a train station.

It's a terrible shame the Old Penn Station was torn down. The new one is an insult to the name Penn Station27.gif
The only thing left of the old station are 2 of the 6 eagles that adorned the roof. One is now on Seventh Ave near Madison Square Garden and I think the other is at Cooper Union somewhere.

However, there are plans to convert the General Post Office(which is reminiscent of the old Penn Station) into a

The Empire State is currently the worlds 9th tallest building. With just that information, one might think okay, so what?. But there's more to it than that. Look at a list of the worlds tallest buildings, and you'll find the top of it is dominated by late 20th century and 21st century constructions. Then you get the Empire State which was completed in 1931. At the time, it was the world's talest by a considerable amount. It's also held the title of the worlds tallest building longer than any other contemporary building. Taipei 101 beat out the Petronas Towers in 2004. The Petronal Towers beat out the Sears tower in 1998, which beat out the old 1 World Trade Center in 1974, which beat out the Empire State in 1973. So it spent 42 years as the worlds tallest building. That's a considerable feat. Going further back, it beat out the Chrysler Building of 1930, which beat out the Woolworth Building of 1913. Although, the record for tenure as the world's tallest building is one that will likely never be broken, as it was held by the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Giza, Egypt for at least 4,000 years, maybe more. Some historians put it as being built around 2000 BC, but other evidnce says that it may even be as old as 6500 BC... Ancient Egypt is nutty stuff.

So yeah, the Empire State rocks, but the New Freedom tower will be taller than it, and look better than it. Even if it probably will never be the world's tallest since the thing they're gonna put up in Dubai will likely be completed first.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.
