How to Get Full Screen in Ubuntu

I have sucessfully installed Simcity 4 in Wine - Ubuntu 12.04 (a lot easier to do than PlayInLinux). The game runs okay apart fron the fact I can't get it to use the full screen - it's sitting in the top left corner with a black border below and to the right.

I'm using a 1440x900 monitor. I cant set the screen resolution in the Wine settings below 96 dpi though I understand windows runs at 72 dpi so I'm not sure if the problem is related to that.

Is there any thing I can do to at least centre the display and make it use the full height of the monitor? I've tried adjusting resolution and other settings in Wine configuration and the game settings to no avail.

Sure.  Use a command script to start your game and make use of the command line options.  Here is a copy of my script from my ~/bin directory:

#!/bin/bash
date
env WINEPREFIX="/home/john/.wine" \
wine "C:/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/SimCity 4.exe" \
 -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:directx \
 -CPUCount:1 -f &>~/sc4.log
date

You need to change the -r directive to reflect the dimensions of your screen, and that's it.

This script has a couple of features I find useful.  The two date commands tell me how long I've run.  The output redirect (&>~/sc4.log) sends the wine console to the file for sending in trouble reports if any.

You just put this script in your own ~/bin folder, log off, log back on to activate the folder if you have no other scripts there, and then the command from a console to start the game is simply whatever you call the script.  Extensions are not necessary on scripts but you do have to give them execute permission using chmod +x ~/bin/<script name>

    That's excellent thanks.

Now how do I install Windows Java in Wine? I've tried running the installer by right clicking and selecting Open With Wine and also from terminal using the chmod command. However the wine background loads and crashes after a few seconds.

Also I'm getting weird cursor flickering in the game for example If I select the bulldoze tool and move it around over blank terrain it is leaving artefacts of several highlighted tiles with a $0 appearing. These only disappear if i actually use the tool or another one.

What would be causing this? My first thought was the screen resolution but it happens even with the default resolution.

To clarify I've installed SC4, Rush Hour and NAM 32 (minus the RHW) but without Java yet on Wine. I initially installed the full NAM and subsequently repeated the install with the RHW deselected - I'm assuming that left RHW uninstalled.

If you have the Windows Java Installer, right click on it and choose "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader".  Should work.  Did for me.  I am on wine 1.7.28.

You might need to check your GPU's driver version.  This is not a wine feature.  I have had cursor trouble in the past because the support for my chip set was dropped by AMD.  I have an AMD780 chip set, and it is currently supported by Gallium 0.4 driver.  There are still some cursor problems with secondary levels in hardware rendering but it is ever so much better than previous when only software rendering worked properly.

For your demolition problem, try asking for a screen redraw (the g key toggles the grid, so press it twice).
