Running SC4 on Windows 8.1?

I'm going to keep this short since I have had to retype this.

 

Since updating to windows 8.1, my SC4 graphics are jacked up. Textures and buildings go missing.

 

I can include screenshots within a few hours of what I'm talking about. I've updated windows and my graphics drivers, no luck.

 

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I'm guessing you have an Intel integrated graphics chip. If this chip exists on your computer, this is what the game will use by default to render the graphics, regardless of whether you have a dedicated graphics card. Intel's HD Graphics chips don't like old games, and if you have a dedicated graphics card on your computer, go into the settings utility for the card and set it so that SC4 uses the dedicated graphics card for rendering rather than the lousy integrated graphics. If you're like me and have a laptop that only has onboard graphics, you will have to run SC4 on Windows 8 or older.

You could also try it in software rendering mode.  To do that, in the Target box of the Shortcut (properties) that starts the game add:

 

<space>-d:software

 

after the closing quote of the complete pathname where <space> is one depression of the space bar.  If this doesn't work or if you use HD textures, then you should upgrade to Windows 7.

Thanks guys. When Windows 8.1 updated, it restored my graphics card settings, so it was running SC4 on the bad card like you said compdude. Changing it to the right card fixed the issue.
