City unable to load

Hi! I also seem to have a problem with one/some of my cities in a region I've been building for a couple of years now. Now until recently I have had no issues with this region, but now one of my city tiles has started crashing before it loads. I tried multiple things, first the no plugin option, then changing all the settings (which did prove effective on the neighbouring tile), replacing the existing city file with an older version, but to no avail. Now I'm asking here for some help if someone knows the workings of the game any better (in which I strongly believe one does).

Here is also the exception report.

Well, the dump panel shows you running the Steam-acquired version of the digital download with Windows 8.  A normal looking crash with nothing obvious.

Did you upgrade recently to Windows 8?

Possible causes besides a problem with W 8:

  • Changed a plugin without first deleting all associated lots;
  • Removed a plugin without ...
  • Altered/Changed/Deleted an overall mod such as a tree controller

A crash on load request usually means an incompatibility between the plugin suite and the city being loaded.  If this is the case, I hope you can put your plugins back to the state where the city would load.  If this is lost, the city may well be toast.

The no-plugins crash may indicate you've created an actual dependency on some plugin like a tree controller.

    Thanks, that just might be the case. Is there any option to get a hold of a plugin list in a specific city, if you maybe know?

    I don't know, but listen for a while.  Someone may have a city file lister or something.

    A few things to check:

    Are you running software or hardware rendering? If you are not using DirectX rendering and have inadvertly installed a HD mod, then you will get a CTD every time you open a tile.

    Another common cause is changing tree controllers, if any of the old trees are left behind (even one) and you do this, the game will CTD upon opening and can only be fixed by getting your plugins back to their original state before changing tree controller.

    There are some buildings that if they remain plopped and you remove the files from your plugins that can also cause this error.

    Frankly windows crash reports aren't a lot of help to get a resolution to your problem, but something must have triggered a change. If you've changed anything between everything working fine and now, almost certainly changing it back will fix it. The more information you can provide about this, the easier it will be for someone to recognise the exact issue you face and give you better advice than shots in the dark. Also if you haven't tested with a clean plugins folder (i.e. removing everything except the Network Addon Mod and z___NAM folders) then seeing if it works, then this should be your first step. This actually takes very little time and will tell you if the problem likely resides within your plugins folder or not.
