Yes, there is one thing that you missed.  You have to render the map.  To do this, enter SC4 and once it loads, press down Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R and navigate to the place where you stored the files.  Double click on the one that isn't a JPEG.  That will either start the render, or you will need to click on the open button.  Wait for the region to render (it can take a while) and when it is finished, you will have your region.

Hello,

If you want to make your own terrains, read this. (This link takes you away from Simtropolis).

Presumably you did put the map in the REGIONS folder and not in the plugins folder ?

Firstly create a region, then exit the game, using windows explorer find the sim city regions folder and open the region you just created, place the map that you downloaded into that folder. Then take the custom bmp you downloaded and OVERWRITE the existing bmp config file. Start SC4 and open the region, press ctrl shift alt R find the regions folder, select the map file from the crated region folder, and the region will render as per the map and the config bmp :-)

I have one correction to Voar Tok's instructions.  You do select the jpg.  It is the grayscale that sets the elevations in the region.

EDIT:  If you are not comfused by now, I would be amazed.  Here are some simple steps.

With the game shut down.
Create a new folder in the C:\My Documents\SimCity 4\Regions folder.
Name it with the name of the region you would like.
copy the config.bmp file there.
start the game, load the region you just made.
do the key press [shift ctrl alt R] browse to the grayscale [*.jpg] and select it.

The hour glass will appear if all has been done right, and the cities will cycle, but no terrain will show yet.  When it is done with the render your region should be terraformed.

The config file needs to be in the folder before the game loads

Fearandir you MUST install the custom config bitmap that was provided with the map - and OVERWRITE any existing config in the region folder

The grayscale must be in a ratio of 64 to 1 plus 1 to the config.bmp.  The default region grayscale size is 1025 square, with the config.bmp being 16 square pixels.

Tungston - with all due respect - the guy is a complete newbie - he doesnt need to know or understand the mathematics - all he needs to do is install the custom config provided with the map he downloaded.

In my experience when helping newbies, its best to keep it simple :-)

How much more simple can you ask for.  If you are going to make custom regions, that information is basic.

1st of all you will need to do one thing if it has not been done...

    1. load the map into Photoshop or what ever program you use for graphics convert the image to greyscale.

    2. Load Landscape designer and load your region pic then make the config file save both files into your

    Mydocuments/simcity4/Regions/ {region name}

    Load Simcity 4

    then load the region

    hold Shift+CTRL+ALT+R

tell it to look into your region folder you saved it to

then sit back and let it render will take anywhere from 30 min to an hour depending on computer speeds.

    I hope this helps.

Tungston - when MAKING a custom region yes its neccessary to be aware of the paramaters required - but as per the title of this thread, he did not MAKE the region he downloaded a map - so my instruction is all that is required. Why confuse newbies with info they dont require ???

Im sorry if this sounds arguementative, but there are too many members arguing and contradicting each other when replying to newbies, so come on guys lets just keep it simple and give the newbies simple step by step info so they can enjoy this excellent game and community as WE all do :-)

So that is your problem, you don't think anyone but you should help.  If that is your concern, you may not find it pleasant on ST, because many members like to add their comments.  And there is nothing wrong with that.

If you go to the first post you will see, Fearandir did not start this thread, so the tittle seems a bit irrelevant.

    Wooo, men, just relax!!
Thanks for your help to both of you. I've already installed the custom config.bmp as config.bmp (that is, I didn't change the file name) and put it into the same Region folder as the jpg. Question is, I keep having that ugly message...
I'm really lost, I'll try later the option with the Landscape designer and see if it works that way.
Thank you again, but please don't argue, boys...

Look closely at the config.bmp file in the folder, it may have been named config1.bmp.  If so the game won't recognize it.  Why the files are named that, I can't say, but several on the STEX are.
