I the picture below is my city Terra it is a large region tile. surrounded by 5 other cities each freeway connects to another tile Terra in the middle my  question is how do you check how healthy the connection is? and how close in size (population) do the connecting cities need to be to induce intercity and outer city travel. I just thought I would have more traffic than I do

Nice city. I like the terraforming around the water. And the railway bridge curving over water and a highway!

If each of your cities is healthy (good ratio of jobs:Sims), then there isn't much need for massive amounts of inter-city traffic. It will mostly be Sims living near the edge of the tile. Plus, if you have many highway connections, none of them will used as much as you'd expect - especially if there are mass transit options too.

You can check each connection with the traffic query tool by clicking on the yellow arrows. That will tell you about traffic volume and types. For the game, congestion is the only measure of 'health' for city connections.

Good point.  Also, on the open city dialogue box you can calculate the health of your city.  The ratio of Sims to jobs (a little adding needed) should be about 2 to 1.

You can also increase your income in each city by the adroit use of toll booths on the neighbour connections.

Ok thank you I will try out the advice. I am good at doing stand alone cities but this time I like them all.
