Determining height (shadows?)

So a side project I tried to pick up on in down time (where was I? School and other stuff--oh, and my Windows installation is down again, so no SimCity   ) and trying to figure out doing heights of things. Once again, I became focused on my "Houston Auchan" project (again), examining every Bing and Google Maps thing I could find. There were two parts to the building component: the actual height of the building and the tent-like skylights from the building above. I made notes as to the height of the shadows from Google Earth and tried to compare them to known building height/shadows but the larger buildings with known heights tended to have overlapping shadows so no go on that. It was pretty frustrating and I gave up on it, so probably the first project I'll end up doing (maybe SKU first?) would be gas stations since there doesn't seem to be enough of those around.

 

Anyways...any luck on getting accurate building heights of buildings that don't really have set heights? Because I don't...
