Problem with Roads - please help!

Hello!  I'm not sure if I downloaded a mod (?) that screwed with my roads but whenever I put down a street and even place buildings beside the street, part of it will disappear as if I didn't put something there, especially when it comes to corners/curves.  

 

If I use the arrow to turn the view of the city in a different direction, sometimes they will appear but most of the time it has missing pieces in the road and I also sometimes see "scratches" across my screen that look like silver lightning bolts.  Do I have a bug?  

 

I have even tried deleting the cities, uninstalling the program, reinstalling, and yet it still does it.  Any thoughts?  I'll take any suggestions.  Have I downloaded files from here that might be corrupt?   Any advice would be appreciated!   Thanks!

It would be useful to see a picture of the problem, and to know whether you have the NAM installed, which version of the game, etc.

 

If you think it might be caused by a recent mod, then try removing that mod from your plugins folder. If you don't have any mods installed anymore (after a clean re-install), then try the different video settings to see if you can make the problem go away.

What version of Windows do you have? If you have Windows 8.1, you are bound to have some graphical issues w/ it. Did you recently upgrade from 8 to Windows 8.1? If so that could be your problem, and I'd suggest going back to Windows 8 or Windows 7. These are the last two versions that can run SC4 properly, albeit with some special changes in the target command line.

As others have implied, there is not enough information to help you.  Most people don't have this problem.

 

So: did you install from CD?  If so, did you get the two published patches?

 

If you installed a downloaded copy from an authorized vendor check the version number.  It should be 1,1,641.

 

And it would be useful if you could post some screen shots.

Thank you everyone!   I didn't think about posting screenshots so I will do that ASAP.   I downloaded a few mods so I'm not even sure what could possibly be screwing it up.   As for the Windows 8.1 comment, my computer does those stupid updates automatically so I'm not sure.   Does anyone have a link or know how I can get back to Windows 8.0 just in case?    I could try that as well.    Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to write!   I will try to get some screen shots asap.

To find out what version of Windows you have, move your mouse to the top-right corner of the screen and then down the side and click settings in the menu that appears. Then click PC info and it should bring up a window that tells you which windows version you have and other computer specs. As for upgrading to Windows 8.1, it shouldn't do this automatically; for me, it pop up with a message saying "Get Windows 8.1 for free" with a link to the Store app.

Don't get caught in the software trap where the software purveyor tells you you don't need to know things.  Spend a little time with your help files, especially about the file system.  It is a machine with a great many capabilities that don't appear on the surface, and you shouldn't live in ignorance.  What they tell you you don't need to know will one day bite you.

^{CompDude, thank you for the tip on how to find the version I have.  It is 8.0 so that's good that it didn't upgrade to 8.1.}
