Game is unplayable without Internet connection!

Sargeantcm, I would also be interested in learning how do go the Wine route. I just bought a new Retina Macbook Pro and would love to have Simcity running natively or at least without dual booting. I am really hoping that the Aspyr version of the game gets worked on and support for mods grows but if it doesn't, I think the Wine route may be what I am looking for. Thanks for the offer!

According to sargeantcm (see ), it is possible to run SC4DatPacker using Wine. I myself am new to Wine and, to be honest, have not managed to get it to work yet.

Sorry for the delay in my response; I guess I don't lurk around in the forums as much as I probably should.  If you need a quicker response I'm better with PMs.

Anyway, SC4DatPacker 2008 will run.  It needs the vcrun2003 Winetrick.

As for other utilities that I use (3rd party and Maxis), listed below are the Winetricks that are needed to run.  If you have use something not listed below, don't be afraid to play around.  Just make a copy of your SC4 app (in case you screw up :) ) and just try installing different Winetricks until you find the one (or combination) that makes it work.  Of course there may not be one, either, but that's something we need to find out regardless.  Often, and this helped me in compiling my list, you can look at the program's development thread (often on SC4Devotion) and find out what programming language was used to write it, and that will clue you in to which Winetrick(s) you probably need.  In other words, be aware that you'll need to do some legwork and tuning to get things running smoothly but once you do it's well worth it.

Note that the TSCT (Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool) which is used to customize the traffic simulator is a Java app and as such will run natively under OS X.

In the process of trying to root out some CTDs I've been experiencing, last night I decided to start with a fresh installation of SC4 in Wine.  In the process, I updated my engine from WS9Wine1.7.10 to 1.7.20, and Wineskin from 2.5.x to 2.6.0.

As it turns out, I no longer need to do the ddr=gdi Winetrick (which basically adds a registry string "DirectDrawRenderer=gdi") as while it improved performance under 1.7.10, it's actually detrimental (or at least seems to be in concert with other changes I've made) under 1.7.20.  Additionally, I added the registry string "VideoMemorySize=xxx" (xxx=512 in my case).  Finally, I also added my video cards to the graphicsrules.sgr and videocards.sgr files - I had never done this before as I had never experienced a noticeable improvement from doing so.

Suffice it to say that the increase in performance floored me.  I have never seen SC4 run so smoothly in any other setup - be it native under Windows, Parallels VM, Bootcamp or Aspyr's latest release.  The frame rate is so fluid as to be nearly imperceptible - only occasional small hiccups as it loads new imagery.

I'm still getting CTDs, but seemingly less often and my intuition at the moment it's just due to the sheer mass of my plugins suite.

The latter paragraph is something I've heard with a lot of Windows apps...they run better on a Mac than on a native machine. I'm getting pretty good results with JDatPacker (see above).

You are hero! That did the trick. It works perfectly now. Only there is no way to configure the path to the plugins folder in SC4DatPacker, but sym-linking it works. I wonder though how one finds out which wine-tricks need to be installed.

There is absolutely no reason to apologize. I did not actually anticipate a direct response to my post, and I am not the most active person in the forums, either. In fact, I only visited ST today because I noticed you being online at SC4D earlier today. At any rate, thanks a lot for your help.

As for the other programs on your list, I did not even succeed in running all of those in Windows. I have yet to try installing SC4 in Wine, but, as I don't really play the game these days, for dabbling the Aspyr port is quite acceptable.

    Thanks for letting me know!
